1. TRANSITIVE VERBS Definition : a transitive verb is a verb that is followed by object(s).

Part and examples : Transitive verbs can be used both in the active and passive form. a) Active form 1. We love Bali 2. The teacher announced a quiz 3. Many people saw the accident 4. She gave me a book 5. She surprised me Explanation of the examples : Notice that transitive verbs always take objects. You will always be able to ask a question beginning with 'What' or 'Whom'. Just like, the example, we can make questions : 1. What do we love ? 2. What did the teacher announce ? 3. What did many people see ? 4. What did she give ? OR To whom did she give a book ? 5. Who did surprise her ? As you see the explanation above, all of the examples are able to ask question beginning with 'What' or 'Whom'. In addition, in the example number 4, you can ask question beginning with both What and To whom, because it has two objects, are known as direct and indirect object. Here a book is the direct object of gave and me is the indirect object. Notice that the answer to What or Whom is the direct object and the answer to To whom or For whom is the indirect object. b) Passive form 1. Bali is loved by us 2. A quiz was announced by the teacher 3. The accident was seen by many people 4. A book was given by her to me

I was surprised by her Explanation of the examples : Notice that the transitive verbs will always be able to change into passive form, As the examples above, we take the examples by changing the examples of active form become passive form. 2. INTRANSITIVE VERBS Definition : an intransitive verb is a verb that is not followed by an object, but sometimes are followed by the compliment. Examples : Intransitive verbs can only be used in the active form. 1. Jack sat in the corner when he was reading 2. Peter arrived early 3. They slept peacefully 4. The leaves fell to the ground 5. Anns cat died last week Explanation of the examples : We cant change those examples into passive form. Its NOT: 1. The corner is sat when Jack reads 2. Early was arrived by Peter 3. Peacefully was slept by them 4. The ground was fallen by the leaves 5. Last week was died by Anns cat You can recognize that a verb is intransitive because it does not have a passive form. We also unable to ask question beginning with 'What', 'Whom', To whom or For whom. The questions are absurd and meaningless, because there is no object. 3. TRANSITIVE-INTRANSITIVE VERBS Definition : a transitive-intrasitive verb is a verb that has multiple meanings, which it can be used both transitively or intransitively, depending on their usage.

Examples : Transitive She runs a business He boiled some water You must always speak the truth The explosion sank the ship They rang the bell Explanation of the examples : In those example, the verbs could be placed both in transitive or intransitive, based on their usage. Which, in the transitive, it can change into passive, but in the intransitive it cant. Intransitive He ran quickly The water boiled He spoke fluently The ship sank rapidly The bell rang
