Topic description

This ward class deals on the case management of clients with sleep disorders. Discussion will include the etiology, psychopathology, DSM IV-TR diagnostic statements with emphasis on medical and nursing management of the client with the disorder.

Central Objective

At the end of two hours ward class presentation, the students shall gain knowledge, comprehension, and develop positive attitudes in the care of a patient with sleep disorders.

Introduction Sleep is a basic human need and unless we experience difficulty in sleeping, we take our sleep for granted. Sleep is very important for us human beings since it recovers our energy when it is depleted. Being deprived with this can lead to chronic fatigue, memory problems, energy deficit, mood difficulties, and a feeling of just generally being out of sorts. Sleep disorders are common in the general population and among people with psychiatric disorders. Sleep disturbances can influence the development and course of mental illness and addictive disorders and also can affect treatment and recovery. I. Bruxism- is characterized by the grinding of the teeth and is in their own words typically accompanied by the clenching of the jaw especially in situations of stress or during sleep, and it can even occur during short naps. 2. Dyssomnias- disorders of initiating or maintaining sleep or excessive sleepiness 3. Hypersomnia excessive sleepiness which there is a state of confusion upon awakening. Excessive daytime sleepiness or somnolence, or both. But doesnt apply to exhausted or worn out individuals. This condition occurs less often than insomnia but is not uncommon. 4. Insomnia-difficulty falling asleep, trouble maintaining sleep, or waking up too early 5. Narcolepsy- Irresistible attacks of refreshing sleep occurring daily over at least three months with cataplexy and hallucinations or sleep paralysis at the beginning or end of sleep episodes 6. Parasomnias- by abnormal physiologic or behavioural events that occur during sleep or transition from sleep to wakefulness 7.
