Managing Server Roles and Features

What Are Server Roles?
The following are the other server roles that you can install on Windows Server 2008: Active Directory Certificate Services Active Directory Certificate Services (AD CS) provides customizable services for creating and managing public key certificates. These certificates are used in software security systems that employ public key technologies. You can use AD CS to enhance security by binding the identity of a person, device, or service to a corresponding private key. AD CS also allows you to manage certificate enrollment and revocation in various scalable environments. Active Directory Federation Services Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) provides a Web-based, single sign-on (SSO) solution that authenticates users to multiple Web applications by using a single user account. AD FS securely federates or shares the user identities and access rights, in the form of digital claims, between organizations. Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services You can use Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS) as the data store for applications that require a directory for storing application data. AD LDS does not require the deployment on a domain controller. It runs as a non-operating system, allowing multiple instances of AD LDS to run concurrently on a single server. Each instance can be configured independently for servicing multiple applications. Active Directory Rights Management Services Active Directory Rights Management Services (AD RMS) is an information protection technology that works with AD RMSenabled applications to help safeguard digital information from unauthorized use. Content owners can define how a recipient can use the information, such as who can open, modify, print, forward, or take other actions with the information. With AD RMS, you can create custom usage rights templates such as "Confidential - Read Only" for financial reports, product specifications, customer data, and e-mail messages. Application Server Application Server provides an integrated environment for deploying and running custom, server-based business applications. Integrated services such as Microsoft .NET Framework, Web server support, message queuing, COM+, Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), and failover clustering support help to enhance productivity throughout the application life cycle, from design and development through deployment and operations. Fax Server You can use a Fax Server to send and receive faxes. It also allows you to manage fax resources such as jobs, settings, reports, and fax devices on the computer or on the network. To install the Fax Server, you must install the print server role. Print Services Print Services enable the management of print servers and printers. A print server reduces administrative and management workload by centralizing printer management tasks. Network Policy and Access Services Network Policy and Access Services provide users with local and remote network connectivity to connect network segments. Network administrators can use these services to centrally manage network access and client health policies. By using Network Access Services, you can deploy VPN servers, dial-up servers, routers, and 802.11 protected wireless access. You can also deploy RADIUS servers and proxies

to centralize the Network Policies for connection attempts, and use Connection Manager Administration Kit (CMAK) to create remote access profiles or .exe files that allow client computers to connect to your network. Terminal Services Terminal Services provides technologies that enable users to access Windows-based programs that are installed on a terminal server, or to access the Windows desktop from almost any computing device. With Terminal Services, the users can connect to a terminal server to run programs and use network resources on that server. Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration Services Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI) is an industry specification for publishing and locating information about Web services within an organization's intranet, between business partners on an extranet, or on the Internet. UDDI Services provide reliable and manageable applications that help to improve the productivity of developers and IT professionals. With UDDI Services, you can prevent duplication of effort by promoting reuse of existing development work. Windows Deployment Services You can use Windows Deployment Services to remotely deploy Windows operating systems on computers with Pre-boot Execution Environment (PXE) boot ROMs. The implementation of the WdsMgmt Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in manages all aspects of Windows Deployment Services. Windows Deployment Services also provides users an experience consistent with Windows Setup. Windows SharePoint Services Windows SharePoint Services provide a scalable, manageable platform for collaboration and development of Web-based business applications.
