The inclination is such that the train rises vertically 1 meter for every 100 m travelled along the incline. Calculate the necessary power developed by the engine of the train. #7) A mass of 0.2 kg is whirled in a horizontal circle of radius 0.5m by a string inclined at 30o to the vertical. Calculate the tension in the string and the speed of the mass in the horizontal circle. #8) Caster oil at 20oC has a coefficient of viscosity 2.42 Ns/m2 and density 940 kg/m3. Calculate the terminal velocity of a steel ball of radius 2 mm falling under gravity in the oil, taking the density of steel as 7800 kg/m3. #9) Water flows steadily along a uniform flow tube of cross section 30 cm2. The static pressure is 1.2 x 105 Pa and the total pressure is 1.28 x 105 Pa. Calculate the flow velocity and the mass of water per second flowing past a section of the tube. Calculate the approximate height he might jump on a planet whose density is one quarter that of the earth and where radius is one third that of the earth. #11) A nylon rope, 2.5 cm in diameter has a breaking strength of 1.24 x 105 N. Find the breaking strength of similar ropes 1.25 in diameter. #12) A constant torque of 500Nm turns a wheel, which has a moment of inertia 20 kgm2 about its center. Find the angular velocity gained in 2 sec. and the kinetic energy gained.

#13) A flywheel of a gasoline engine is required to give up 500 J of kinetic energy while its angular velocity decreases from 650 rev/min to 520 rev/min. What moment of inertia is required? #14) The mass of the earth is 6 x 1024 kg and that of the moon is 7.4 x 1022 kg. If the distance between their centres is 3.8 x 108 m, calculate at what point on the line joining their centres there is not gravitational force. #15) A projectile is fired from the ground level with a velocity of 500 m/s at 30o to horizon. Find the horizontal range, and greatest vertical height to which it rises. What is the least speed with which it could be projected in order to achieve the same horizontal range? Calculate the coefficient of static friction between the coin and the disc. #20) A lift moves (i) up and (ii) down with an acceleration of 2m/s2. In each case, calculate the reaction of the floor on a man of mass 50 kg standing in the lift. Heat #1) A body cools from 50o C to 40oC in 5 minutes, when the temperature of the surrounding is 20oC. What will be the temperature after 5 minutes? #2)Find the result after mixing 10 g of ice at -8oC with 10 g of water at 12oC. (Specific heat capacity of ice is 0.5 Cal/gm/oC and latent heat of ice is 8 cal/gm) #3) What is the result of mixing 100g of water at 100oC with 100gm of ice at 0oC? #4) Aniline is a liquid which does not mix with water and when a small quantity of it is poured into a beaker of water at 20oC, it sinks to the bottom, the densities of the two liquids at 20oC being 1021 and 998 kg/m3 respectively. To what temperatures must the beaker and its contents be uniformly heated so that the aniline will form a globule which just floats in the water?

When some gas is used in the morning at 7oC, the gas remaining in the cylinder at this temperature has a pressure of 6 atm. Calculate the mass of gas used. #11) Estimate the rate of loss of heat through a glass window of area 2m2 and thickness 4 mm when the temperature of the room is 300 K and that of the air outside is 5oC. #12) What is the ratio of the energy per second radiated by the filament of a lamp at 2500K to that radiated at 2000Km assuming the filament is a black body radiator. #13) Assuming the thermal insulation provided by a woolen glove is equivalent to a layer of quiescent air 3 mm thick, determine the heat loss per minute from a man's hand, surface area 200 cm2 on a winter day when the atmospheric air temperature is -3oC. Calculate the rise in temperature , the original temperature being 27oC and =1.5

How much work was done and what was the change in the internal energy of the gas? Assume one mole of an ideal gas to be taken. #3) A petrol engine consumes 5 kg of petrol per hour. If the power of engine is 20 kilo watts and the calorific value of petrol is 11 x 103 k cal per kg, calculate the efficiency of the engine. #4) Ice in a cold storage melts at the rate of 2 kg per hour when the external temperature is 20oC. Find the maximum power output of the motor used to drive the refrigerator which just prevents the ice from melting. At what angle will the ray of light emerge out? #2) A converging meniscus of glass (=1.5) having radius of curvature 4 cm and 8 cm is put on a horizontal surface facing upward. If it is filled with water, what will be the focal length of the combination? #3) A thin, equi-convex lens of glass of (=1.50) whose surfaces have a radius of curvature of 24 cm is placed on a horizontal plane mirror. When the space between the lens and mirror is filled with liquid, a pin held 40 cm vertically above the lens is found to coincide with its own image. Calculate the refractive index of the liquid. #4) A converging lens of 6 cm focal length is mounted at a distance of 10 cm from a screen placed at right angles to the axis of the lens. A diverging lens of 12 cm focal length is then placed coaxially between the converging lens and the screen so that an image of an object 24 cm converging lens is formed on the screen. What is the distance between the two lenses? #5) A compound microscope consists of an objective lens of focal length 20 cm and an eye-piece of focal length 6.25 cm, separated by a distance of 15 cm. How far from the objective should an object be placed, in order to obtain the final image at (A) the least distance of distinct vision (B) infinity? What is the magnifying power of the microscope in each case?

#6) A person, with defective vision can see objects clearly only beyond 1 mm from the eye. Which defect is it? Calculate the power of the lens required so that he can see clearly objects placed at least distance of distinct vision of 0.25 m.

#7) In a simple form of an astronomical telescope, the focal length of the object glass is 75 cm and that of eyepiece is 5 cm. Calculate the magnifying power and the distance between the two lenses when the final image of the distant object is seen at a distance of 25 cm from the eye. #8)The far point of a person suffering from myopia is 1.5 m. Electrostatics and capacitor #1) Three point charges, each 3 x 10-7 C are placed at the corner of an equilateral triangle, whose side is 1m. What is the electric field at one of the vertices of the triangle due to these charges? #2) Three charges of 3 x 10-9 C, -3 x 10-9 C and 1.5 x 10-9 C are placed in air at the corners A, B, C of an equilateral triangle ABC having each side 5 cm. Find the force acting on the charge 1.5 x 10-9 C. #3) A charged oil drop stationary when situated between two parallel horizontal metal plates 25mm apart and potential difference 1000V is applied to the plates. Find the charge on the drop if it has a mass of 5 x 10-15 kg. (Assume g = 10 N/kg) #4) Two plane parallel conducting plates are held horizontal, one above another, in a vacuum. Electrons having a speed of 6.0 x 106 m/s and moving normally to the plates enter the region between them through a hole in the lower plate which is earthed. (Permittivity in vacuum is 8.85 x 10-12 C2N-1m-2) #6) Two capacitors of capacitance 4 F and 12 F respectively are connected in series and the combination connected momentarily across a 200 V battery. The charged capacitors are now isolated and connected in parallel, similar charged plates being connected together. What would be the resulting potential difference across the combination? #7) A parallel plate capacitor with air as the dielectric has a capacitance of 6 x 10-4 F and is charged by a 100 V battery. Calculate (a) The charge (b) the energy stored in the capacitor (c) the energy supplied by the battery. The battery connections are now removed, leaving the capacitor charged, and a dielectric of relative permittivity 3 is then carefully placed between the plates. What is the new energy stored in the capacitor?
