Jefferson fair roars into action next month

NEW ATTRACTIONS:
Circus act, pro wrestling, concert among features of 194th annual event
A young woman and her four trained Bengal tigers are among the new stars of this years Jefferson County Fair, scheduled July 12 though 17 at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds. Vincentas White Tigers recently part of a Ringling Brothers circus run will be featured in several shows a day for the first five days (Tuesday through Saturday) at the 194th annual fair, the oldest continuously operating county fair in the United States. Still in her 20s, Vicenta Pages comes from a long line of circus performers on both sides of her family. Her feline costars, four females and two males, are Spirit, Fiona, Kia, Mikayla, Mohan and Taurus. While Vicenta is an extraordinary tiger trainer, her circus repertoire also includes aerial skills such as flying trapeze, lyra and her speciality, Roman rings. She made her first public appearance at age 4. Her first solo appearance was at age 8 in an act featuring four ponies. At 12 she was already performing on aerial rings. But Vicenta decided to follow in her grandfathers footsteps in working with tigers, at first with the guidance of her grandfather and father. The Jefferson County Fair is presented by the Jefferson County Agricultural Society. Gate admission is free on opening day, $5 a day from Wednesday through Saturday and $4 on closing day, Sunday, July 17. Parking for the fair will again be free at Jefferson Community College. Four trams which will provide free shuttle transportation from the JCC lots to the fairgrounds. The general public is asked to the JCC parking area, becauses parking on the fairgrounds is very limited and will be reserved for exhibitors and handicapped space. Other features of this years fair include: A pro wrestling event July 15 at the grandstand, presented in conjunction with 2cw wrestling. admission to this event is $25 for second-row row reserved field seats, $17 for third-row reserved field seats and $12 for general admission seats in the bleachers. A grandstand concert, Badfish A Tribute to Sublime, on July 16. Admission to the concert is $25, or $20 if purchased in advance. Returning to the grandatnd is the world famous Stoney Roberts Demolition Derby at 7 p.m. July 14 and 3 p.m. July 17. Admission to this event is $5 each day. A ticket purchased in advance for any grandstand event includes gate admission

to the fair on the day of the event. Grandpa Cratchet and his Take The Garbage Out Show and Puppetmobile, a family show with strolling and stage performances every day of the fair. A childrens group from Canada, Smudge Fundaes voted Canadian Childrens Group of the Year will also be performing daily. Just Clowning Around will feature a clown walking around each day making balloon animals for kids. An animated agricultural show, Melody Farm Follies, with 10 different five-minute segments each day. The fair and midway operator Reithoffer Shows again offer the Mega Pass, a ticket good for any one day of the fair, covering admission and all-day rides from 1 p.m., when the midway opens, until around 11 p.m., when it closes. Mega Pass does not include grandstand events. Advance-sale Mega Passes are available for $19 each at Price Chopper, all Kinney Drugs stores in Jefferson County, at the Salmon Run Mall and at the fair entry office until opening day. During the fair, the tickets will be available at the fairgrounds for $23.

SYMPHONY SYRACUSE: Musicians of former SSO to perform Friday in Watertown
The Northern New York Community Foundation, in partnership with former Watertown Mayor T. Urling Walker, says sufficient commitments have been made so that the traditional Independence Day concert and fireworks in Watertowns Thompson Park will proceed this year. The event was in jeopardy following the recent disbanding of the Syracuse Symphony. Symphony Syracuse, founded by approximately 65 musicians of the former Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, will perform An Independence Day Celebration beginning at 8 p.m. Friday. The group will be conducted by Daniel Hege. The concert will include many patriotic favorites, ending with Tchaikovskys 1812 Overture and Sousas Stars and Stripes Forever. The concert will also feature the firing of cannons, courtesy of Fort Drum, followed by the traditional fireworks display. Local band Fred & the Eds will perform beginning at 5:45 p.m., followed by an Operation Yellow Ribbon rally at 7 p.m. This event would not have been possible without the generosity of over 30 organizations and individuals. ALEXANDRIA BAY Under the direction of the Alexandria Township Historical Society, a nonprofit organization, the Cornwall Brothers Store & Museum, 36 Market St., will open an exhibit, Celebrating Hutchinson Boats Alexandria Bay River Classics, from 4 to 6 p.m. July 10. The event will include a reception with an auction, the proceeds of which will Silent Auction and reception, the proceeds of the auction will kick off the WOW (Windows on the Water) campaign to supplement a state grant for replacement of windows at the museum. The exhibit opening, auction and reception are open to the public.

Capes 43rd annual French Fest next week

CAPE VINCENT The annual weekend celebration of Cape Vincents heritage the 43rd annual French Festival (La Fete Franaise) begins at 7:30 p.m. July 8 with a free family block dance in front of the Cape Vincent Fire Hall on Broadway Street. St. Johns Episcopal Church, Market Street, begins the day July 9 with a 7 a.m. pancake breakfast in the parish center at the church. The all you can eat meal, served until 11 a.m., includes pancakes, sausage juice and coffee. Beginning at 8 a.m. July 9, the French Festival Committee and TI Booster Club will be selling French bread and pastries which usually sell out very quickly at the fire hall. On Saturday, July 10, some streets are closed for the festivals crafts and exhibit booths opening at 10 a.m. Venors will be selling handmade and home-baked goods, including handcrafted wood items, homemade fudge, American and French flags, popcorn and balloons. The French Festival Committee will be selling a commemorative poster created and signed by the well-known artist Paul Taylor. July 10 will also include a free-admission childrens program, featuring the Catskill Puppets, on the Village Green from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and again after the parade. Street performances will include a juggling act. The official opening of the French Festival begins at 11 a.m. at the reviewing stand on Broadway. The ceremony will include a welcome by Mayor Timothy Maloney and Town Supervisor Urban Hirschey, the crowning of French Festival Queen, the presentation of the Queens Court and a closing proclamation by the queen. The parade begins at 2 p.m. with Napoleon leading the way. The parade will include floats, marching bands and more than 50 units from the United States and Canada. A concert in front of the reviewing stand after the parade will include the Cajun band Jesse Lege and Bayou Brew starting at 6:30 p.m. At 5 p.m., St. Vincent of Pauls Church, Kanady Street, will hold a festival Mass, spoken in French. A gala fireworks display will begin at dusk, around 9:30 p.m. The fireworks will be ignited from the Breakwall on the waterfront. Sunday, July 10, the arts and crafts show and sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A memorial scholarship benefit soccer game at the Cape Vincent Elementary School, between Thousand Islands High School alumni and a Thousand Isalnds High School team, will start at 11 a.m. Also that Sunday, there will be be an antique-car parade, sponsored by North Country All-American Classics car club, starting at 1 p.m. Eli, a 1917 ambulance, will lead a procession of various antique motor vehicles including tractors, cars

and trucks. Jesse Lege and Bayou Brew will perform at the bandstand on the village green immediately after the car parade. The French Festival is sponsored by

Jefferson Fair hosts family fun

McCarthy and the Watertown City Firefighters Association will be coordinating An Evening for Developmentally Disabled Children a fair tradition with Reithoffer Shows and some fair vendors sponsoring activities and food. Youths will be admitted free that Thursday, Youth Day, with reduced ride prices on the midway. Wednesday and Friday are pay-one-price days for unlimited midway rides. Sundays Last Blast will offer another pay-one-price day with unlimited rides at a special rate.
Fiddle concert Sunday at Osceola hall-museum

OSCEOLA Members of the Black River Valley Fiddlers Association will perform in a free concert of old-time fiddle music from 2 to 5 p.m. July 10 at the North American Fiddlers Hall of Fame and Museum, 1121 Comins Road. Next, the Fiddlers Hall of Fame will host concerts July 17 by Fred Bingle of Castorland and July 24 by Laura Dennis of Brantingham, both from 2 to 5 p.m. The concert series is funded in part by the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency. The Fiddlers Hall of Fame and Museum is open during the Sunday concerts. All the facilities are handicapped-accessible and enclosable in the event of bad weather. There is a food vendor onsite. From Thursday through Sunday, July 28 to 31, the hall will host its annual fiddlers picnic festival, featuring state fiddle favorite George Wilson of the Albany area.

Jazz trombonist stars Thursday in Norwood series

ON THE GREEN: Famed
NORWOOD The Norwood Village Green Concert Series presents the Wally Siebel All Star Big Band with jazz and gospel trombonist Wycliffe Gordon at 7 p.m. Thursday. For 30 years the band has performed annually for the series. Each year the performances are new and fresh with the appearances of guest artists. In the past decade there has also been collaboration with 350 to 400 students in the Crane Youth Music program of the SUNY Potsdams Crane School of Music. The day after the performance in Norwood, the guest artist instructs those students in workshops. The guest artist then rejoins Wally Siebel and the band for another performance that evening. This year Wycliffe Gordon is guest artist. A performer, conductor, composer, arranger, and educator, Mr. Gordon has received acclaim from audiences and critics. He tours the world, performing jazz for audiences ranging from heads of state to elementary school students. He received the Jazz Journalists Association award in 2008, 2007, 2006, 2002 and 2001 as Trombonist of the Year, and the Jazz Journalists Association 2000 Critics Choice Award for Best Trombone. In addition to a thriving solo career, he tours regularly leading the Wycliffe Gordon Quartet, headlining at top jazz venues throughout the world. Mr. Gordon is a veteran of the Wynton Marsalis Septet and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and has been a featured guest artist on Billy Taylors Jazz at the Kennedy Center Series. His extensive performance experience includes work with many of the most renowned jazz performers of the past and present. His music is on numerous recordings, including 15 solo CDs and seven co-leader CDs. His latest effort, Cone and T-Staff, released in February 2010, is a quintet recording featuring trumpeter Terrell Stafford. Mr. Gordon is featured on numerous recordings with the Wynton Marsalis Septet, Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and many others as evidenced in his extensive discography. He is also a gifted composer and arranger. He was commissioned to compose a vibrant new score for the 1925 classic silent film Body and Soul (notable as the screen debut of Paul Robeson), which was premiered at the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestras 2000-01 season opening night performance at Avery Fisher Hall, and was released on DVD in 2008. Mr. Gordons compositions have been performed by the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the Wynton Marsalis Septet, the Wycliffe Gordon Quartet, the Brass Band of Battle Creek and numerous other ensembles, and performed in programs throughout the U.S. and abroad including concert halls in New York, Los Angeles, Aspen, Georgia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Germany, London, Finland and Switzerland. Two of Mr. Gordons arrangements are also featured as a part of the PBS series Marsalis on Music. Recent concert seasons have included premieres of compositions by Mr. Gordon for a variety of ensem-
bles in the United States and internationally. The first in a series of print editions of his big-band, small ensemble and choir compositions was made available in 2010. Mr. Gordons television appearances have included the Grammy Awards, the PBS special documentary Swingin with the Duke and two Live from Lincoln Center broadcasts with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra: Uptown Blues, Ellington at 100 (a collaboration with the New York Philharmonic) and Big Train. Mr. Gordon also appeared in Ken Burns documentary Jazz. Other television appearances include A Carnegie Hall Christmas Concert and Live from Lincoln Center: The Juilliard School at 100 Years. Gordon is featured in BETs 13-part series Journey with Jazz at Lincoln Center and was guest artist and commentator in NPR affiliate WVIAs spe-
cial program on Tommy Dorsey (along with the late Skitch Henderson, just days before Mr. Hendersons death). Mr. Gordon also appeared with Wynton Marsalis, receiving high praise from audiences and critics alike. The Wally Siebel All Star Big Band is comprised of professional musicians from Northern New York including faculty from the Crane and area music educators. Wally Siebel is co-founder of Northern Music and Video in Potsdam, a member of the Potsdam Clarinet Quartet and a past member of the board of directors of Music Theater North. This past year he served as interim director of the Community Performance Series. As director of the Wally Siebel All Star Big Band he has also coordinated performances of guest artists such as Ed Shaughnessey, Laurel Masse, Jeff Jarvis, John LaBarbara, Vince DiMartino, Danny DImperio, Russ Kassoff, Dennis McKrell, Michael Davis, Bret Zvacek, Gary Smulyan, Ken Peplowski, Ray Vega and others for the Norwood Village Green Concert Series and Crane Youth Music collaborations. Admission to all village green seriee concerts is free but there is a pass the bucket for donations. The series is supported in part by the New York State Council on the Arts, a public agency. At 7 p.m. July 11, the series presents Robin Dow Hopper. Ms. Hopper grew up in Potsdam. She attended the Crane School as a vocal major, where she earned bachelor and a masters degrees in music education. She taught elementary music in the Madrid-Waddington Central School District for six years before moving to Alaska in 1984. Bearcat band set Sunday, Ioan Harea on July 11

SACKETS HARBOR The Sackets Harbor Historical Societys Concerts on the Waterfront Series 27th season continues at 3 p.m. Sunday with a presentation by The Bear Cat Jass Band. Jass is the original spelling of jazz, and the Bear Cats are original in two ways: their music is authentic early jazz and Dixieland; and the Bear Cat Jass Band is the oldest traditional jazz band in Central New York. The band has been performing since 1957 under the direction of Dick Ames, cornet and trombone player. Bill Palange is on trombone and vocals; Tom McKay and Carl Borek each play clarinet, soprano, alto and bass sax; Drew Frech plays both tenor and Plectrum banjo in addition to his vocals; Jerry Exline is on piano, tuba and vocals; Joe Smithling is the drummer and Jeff Stockham, well known in upstate New York, plays cornet. This spring, Mr. Stockham toured Europe, performing at major international jazz festival and concert venues with jazz luminaries such as Herbie Hancock, Bobby Watson, Joe Henderson and Gerri Allen. Bandleader Dick Ames, now 91, is the only original member of the eight-piece group and is an enthusiastic and knowledgeable ambassador for this thoroughly American art. The Bear Cats play music originally recorded between 1917 and 1935. Their repertoire includes jazz classics by Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver and Louis Armstrong, numbers from the trad revival era of Lu Watters and Clancy Hayes, and the early swing of Duke Ellington and others. The Bear Cats mix in the blues, stomps, ballads, rags, cakewalks and foxtrots of the periodwith the more organized dance band numbers of the 1920s. Their reference material incluides The Original Dixieland Jass Band, which made its first recordings in 1917; the recordings of Joe King Oliver and his Creole Jazz Band of 1923; the New Orleans Rhythm Kings, from Chicago, who were popular in 1921; and Jelly Roll Morton and his Red Hot Peppers. In March 2012, the Bear Cat Jass Band will celebrate its 55th year playing in and around Syracuse with a celebration concert scheduled in Camillus at McNamaras Pub. This spring, the group played at the Canastota Library as it has for the past 20 years, and have gigs lined up for parks concerts in Liverpool and Homer, near Cortland. The Bear Cats have played twice for the Ragtime Jazz Festival in Alexandria Bay and from 2001 through 2006 played for the Flower City Jazz Society at the Party House in Rochester. The rain site is the United Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Broad St. Next, on July 10, the series features Ioan Harea, a virtuoso violinist who performs worldwide. Mr. Harea, a faculty member at SUNY Potsdams Crane School of Music and a member of the Orchestra of Northern New York, will present a program of Classic Gypsy violin music with a string quintet (two violins, viola, cello and bass) made up of other Crane professors: John Lindsey, violin; Nancy Peshko, violin; Harold Levine, viola; Mathias Wexler, cello, and Harry Schenwolf, bass. The program will include works from around the world: Two Guitars (traditional Russian); La Cumparsita, Por Una Cabeza and Jalousie (tangos); Pony Express, Doina Oltului and Whistle Hora (all traditional Romanian); Balada Porumbescu (Romanian); Monti Czardas (traditional Hungarian); Zigeunerweissen (Gypsy Airs); Sarasate (Spanish); Hot Canary, Manha de Carnaval and Bonfa (Brazilian); Hungarian Dance No. 7 (Brahms) and The Lark (traditional Romanian.)
Originally from Romania, Mr. Harea arrived in Canada in 1986 via Venezuela, where he was associate concertmaster of the Municipal Symphony Orchestra of Caracas from 1979 to 1986, as well as violin professor at the Emil Friedman School. Mr. Harea performs as soloist and as a chamber musician in Canada, the United States, Venezuela, Italy, France, Romania and Spain. He is the founder and leader of the Harea String Quartet and the Virtuosi Orchestra and has performed for distinguished audiences including former U.S. President George W. Bush, past Canadian prime ministers Jean Chrtien and Paul Martin, former Mexican President Vicente Fox and Russian leader Vladimir Putin. He has recorded six CDs: Ballade (violin and piano), Classic Gypsy (violin and symphony orchestra), Sentimental Strings (string quartet), Versatility (various instruments in duo with violin) and Unaccompanied (solo violin) all of which show the wide range of styles in which he performs. Unaccompanied was chosen by Richard Todd, arts critic for the Ottawa Citizen, as a 2005 Best Buy for classical recordings. Mr. Harea is the featured artist on The Virtuosi Productions Concert Series at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. Mr. Harea has been acclaimed all across Canada for Classic Gypsy, a unique programming of virtuoso classical favorites, combined with his exclusive arrangements of gypsy music, tangos and jazz, be it accompanied by Orchestra, string quintet or piano. He has performed Classic Gypsy in Canada with the symphonies of Kamloops, Kootenays, Okanagan, Cranbrooke, Prince George, North Bay, Sudbury, Peterborough, Ottawa and Sault Ste.
Marie; as well as with the International and York symphonies, the Hamilton Philharmonic, the Vivace Touring Orchestra and LOrchestre de Chambre de Hull, Qubec. He has toured Classic Gypsy in recital with piano in 17 cities in Ontario, eight cities in British Columbia, in Winnipeg, Manitoba and in Gatineau, Quebec. He also gave three performances of Classic Gypsy to sold out audiences for Hill and Hollow Music in Plattsburgh. A citizen of Canada, Venezuela and Romania, Mr. Harea lives in Ottawa, where he works as a soloist, concertmaster, studio musician and teacher. In March 2000 he traveled to Romania, under the auspices of the Canadian Embassy in Bucharest. He performed the Beethoven Concerto with the Ploiesti Philharmonic, Ravel Tzigane and Sarasate Ziguenerweisen with the Craiova Philharmonic, as well as giving a recital in Bucharest, which was recorded by Romanian National Radio. In 2003, he performed Vivaldis Four Seasons with the Virtuosi Orchestra in Ottawa. He toured in France as guest artist with the Trio Chaudiere, as well as performing with the Nice Philharmonic. Eighth Rock for the River concert set Saturday

First compilation album of songs from past shows available at Saturday show
CLAYTON The eighth annual Save The River Rock for the River benefit concert is scheduled from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the Clayton Opera House, 403 Riverside Drive. And for the first time, a live album of songs Rock for the River 5 is being released with all proceeds benefitting Save The Rivers river protection programs. Rock for the River was developed by Thousand Islands resident and musician Jay Nash. Each year, he brings a group of independent label artists from around the country for the benefit concert, which culminates with all the artists playing together on stage for the last few songs. The new album includes live songs played at the 2008 concert by Jay Nash, Joe Purdy, Garrison Starr, Chris Seefried, Joey Ryan, Chris Pierce, Eliza Moore and Monica Behan. The album will be released digitally via iTunes. Tickets for this years Rock for the River concert are $30 in advance and $35 at the door, and can be purchased at the Save The River office, 409 Riverside Drive, or by calling 686-2010. Rock for the River 8 is sponsored by the Duane and Dalia Stiller Family Foundation, Cerow Agency and Electronic Ink.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Jay Nash emerged into the national spotlight from the same Los Angeles music scene that gave rise to Sara Bareilles, Katy Perry and many other current pop luminaries. He has shared the stage with everyone from the Counting Crows and Maroon 5 to Keb Mo and Dave Mason; he has logged more than 1,000 live performances and sold almost 30,000 albums, without ever having signed a conventional record label deal. Mr. Nash has released three EPs and sixfull length albums. His latest, Diamonds and Blood, was released independently on March 8. The album debuted at No. 5 5 on the iTunes singer/songwriter album chart and has continued to gain attention at AAA radio and win over new listeners ever since. Joe Purdy is a communicator of folklore through song. He releases his albums on his own independent label, Mudtown Crier Records, and with the help of national TV placements and has been able to sell 1 million direct track downloads in the U.S. on iTunes without signing to a label. His music has been featured on the TV shows Lost, Greys Anatomy and House. His song Wash Away (Reprise) was used in a Dawn soap wildlife ad, helping to raise thousands to rescue wildlife
and aide in the Gulf spill cleanup. Currently he is touring North America in support of his new release, This American. Born and raised in California, Chris Pierce was a struggling local singer/songwriter until he met pop icon Seal at a living-room gig in 2005. After this he was invited to be the opening act on the British singers world tour. Since then, he has also opened tours and shows for Seal, B.B. King, Al Green, Jack Johnson, Colbie Caillat, Toots & The Maytals, Ben Harper, Macy Gray, Robert Cray, and Jamie Cullum. His debut album, 2005s Static Trampoline, was followed by a 2007 live album, Music in the Moment, released only in Japan. To help increase his public profile, Pierce started placing songs on various TV shows and films including: Crash, Phat Girlz, Brothers & Sisters, Lincoln Heights, In Plain Sight, Army Wives, What About Brian and HBOs Black History campaign. He also kept up with his steady live work and also had a growing following on the In-
ternet and on adult album alternative radio stations. A second studio album, Walking on the Earth, was released in the spring of 2008 and was picked by KCRWs Nic Harcourt as one of the top 10 albums of the year. Pierce followed up with a second live album in 2009 titled Chris Pierce Live at the Hotel Caf. His new studio album is being released this summer. Althea Jean is a seven-piece string band whose motto is, If it isnt fun, dont do it. The band hails from all corners of the north country, and their genre is best described as Old-Time/World music. Chris Seefried began receiving national attention when Quincy Jones signed his band from New York City, Gods Child, to Warner Brothers Records. Their first record, Everybody, was written and produced by Seefried and his bandmate Gary DeRosa. Gods Childs highest honor came when their single Everybodys One appeared on two Billboard charts at the same time. Everybodys One peaked at No. 18 on the Mainstream Rock chart and No. 25 on the Modern Rock chart. Seefried then moved on to produce and co-write for Fitz and The Tantrums. He produced and cowrote for their EP, Songs for a Breakup, Vol. 1 and again for their full-length debut, Pickin Up The Pieces. On Jan. 12, Fitz & the Tantrums performed songs cowritten by Seefried, MoneyGrabber and Dont Gotta Work It Out, on ABCs Jimmy Kimmel Live.
MoneyGrabber went on to be performed on both TBS Conan O Brien and NBCs The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. In mid-March, a Seefried-cowritten song,, News 4 U, was chosen for the promo of Desperate Housewives seventh season. Michael Cuestas latest movie, Roadie, including a score by Seefried, premiered at The Tribeca Film Festival in April. The Milk Carton Kids, together one year, released their first album, Retrospect, on March 15, with selections from the past year of live performances. A collection of songs from each of their solo careers, written separately but reinterpreted and performed as the duo, Retrospect was released under the name Kenneth Pattengale & Joey Ryan. The first official release of The Milk Carton Kids, Prologue, is comprised of original songs for this project. It is slated for release later this year on their own Milk Carton Records. Garrison Starr started out in the music business at age 15 and was signed to Geffen Records at age 21. She has since been signed to two other labels and has released six full-length albums, and numerous EPs. Along the way, Starr has been the tour opener for Melissa Etheridge, co-produced music for Margaret Chos record, has had music on The Hills, and started the North Labrea All Star Conquistadors with Jay Nash. Her hit song Superhero aired on ABCs coverage of the Womens World Cup Soccer Tournament.

Norwood to feature guitarist-composer July 10

FROM PAGE 12 is an adjunct faculty member of the University of Alaska, in the music education department. In 1991, she was awarded the title of Nationally Certified Music Educator by the Music Educators National Conference a status then bestowed on only 244 teachers nationwide; in 2000, she was named Anchorage Educator of the Year by the Anchorage Educators Association. She says she feels fortunate to be one of the few performing songwriters whose day job also revolves around music. Her childhood home was filled with records by the likes of Tennessee Ernie Ford, Chet Atkins, The Rooftop Singers, Mills Brothers, Peter Paul and Mary, Simon and Garfunkel and the Kingston Trio. Her music is flavored with tastes of their harmonies and easy listening style. As an adult, she has attended many songwriting camps and events, and has been influenced by many of todays best writers and performers. Her music reflects the influence of such writers and mentors as Steve Seskin, Cliff Eberhardt, Kristina Olsen, Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer, Johnsmith, and Bill Staines. Her work has gained notice in songwriting competitions over the years. She received honorable mention for two songs in the Northern California Songwriters Association Song Contest in 2002, and is a fourtime (1996, 1998, 2001, 2003) top-five finalist in the Alaska Public Radio Networks Song of the Year Contest. She was named the Overall Winner in the APRN Song of the Year Contest in 2003, with her song Ring Around The Moon. She has also been the winner of many sub-categories in the APRN contest since 1996. (folk/acoustic, inspirational, regional/Alaskana, other, childrens, jazz, and judges choice). In the fall of 1994, she released her debut album, North Country Living, showcasing 12 original pieces; several of the songs are about life in The Last Frontier, and the rest reflect on family, friends and life in general. Her second album, Up On A Mountain Top, released in 1996, has the same tone, and contains 11 new, original

tracks. Her third CD, Pass It On, and has nine originals, plus four covers. As collections, these albums run the gamut of styles and topics, from the crazy antics of Fish On! through the humor of With One Swell Foop to the poignant twist in Mamas Kisses. Her fourth and fifth CDs are compilations. Scrapbook is a collection of Ms. Hoppers favorite pieces from the first three CDs along with four new songs. The Alaska Collection is just what the name implies all of Ms. Hoppers rrecordings about Alaska gathered for the first time on one CD. In the spring of 11995, she was commissioned to compose, record and perform Arctic Fanfare, the musical theme for the 1996 Arctic Winter Games. This piece received extensive air-
play and news coverage in connection with the games. As past vice-president of the Anchorage Folk Festival, and coordinator of Folk Week In The Schools (a Folk Festival sponsored event), she has been very active in supporting other musicians, as well. She sponsors house concerts and songwriting seminars in her living room regularly, and hosts a songwriters showcase every January. She travels around the state, performing at private functions, festivals, coffeehouses and concerts. At 7 p.m. July 10, Jthe Norwood concert series presents Frank Vignola, a guitarist, composer and improviser who plays proficiently in every genre, from jazz to bluegrass, and works with a wide array of other performers.
His work includes Donald Fagen recordings, a jam with David Grisman, performing alongside Les Paul and leading his own groups throughout the years. Born in Long Island, Mr. Vignola was raised in the New York City area. He started playing the guitar at the age of 5 and grew up admiring a variety of guitarists. Mr. Vignola never listened to jazz exclusively; he was also a major fan of rock, R&B and pop. The guitarists that he admires range from Django and George Barnes to rock icons such as Frank Zappa and Eddie Van Halen. As a young adult, Mr. Vignola studied at the Cultural Arts Center of Long Island and went on to perfrom in a large number of sideman gigs during the 1980s, including recording and touring with the likes of Madonna, Leon Redbone and Ringo Starr. His famed Hot Club of France tribute was hailed in the New York Times as one of the top 10 acts of 1988 and forged the way for the many Django Hot Club groups that followed. Mr. Vignola was 27 when, in 1993, he signed with Concord Jazz and recorded his first Concord session as a leader, Appel Direct. Many more Concord releases followed in the 1990s as well as three releases for the Telarc label as coleader of the group Travelin Light. The early 2000s found Mr. Vignola recording for Acoustic Disc and Hyena Records as well as making featured appearances on Atlantic, Sony and Warner Brothers Records with the likes of Donald Fagen, Queen Latifah, Mark OConnor and Wynton Marsalis. Mr. Vignola has also recorded several DVDs for Mel Bay Records. Gypsy Jam features Jimmy Rosenberg and Favorite Solos features Mr. Vignola with one of his guitar heroes, Bucky Pizzarelli. He has written 18 guitar instruction books for Mel Bay Publications and has recorded several CD-ROM educational products for Truefire.com. He has performed hundreds of clinics and master classes at major universities and colleges throughout the country including Juilliard and Boston University. Frank Vignola will be joined in Norwood by guitarist Vinny Raniolo and bassist Gary Mazzaroppi.
Henderson Decorators Show to help fund boat-display annex

HENDERSON The Henderson Historical Society and Richard Champney are sponsoring the first Decorators Home Show July 1 to10. This event, a fund raiser for the societys boat annex building fund, will feature the work of local artists, decorators, landscapers, caterers and entertainers. Homeowner Richard Champney is opening his 1840s house at 9350 Water St., near the picturesque waterfalls, for the exhibit. Each decorator has been allocated a space to demonstrate interior design or art. Some furnishings will be available for sale after the final house showing on July 10. Business cards will be provided. After the 10 days of public viewing, Mr. Champney will list the home for sale. The event starts from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 1 with a Gala Night to meet the decorators and artists. The $20 RSVP ticket holders will be driven from the Henderson Community Building parking lot by limo to and from the house. There will be live music and a catered reception, and visitors can tour the house at their leisure. (Call Jane for reservations and information at 415-3048). From July 2 to 10, the house is open to the general public. Admission $10 at the door. The Henderson Historical Society is raising funds for the Peters-Stevens Boat Annex to built directly behind the societys main building on Harborview Road.
The Peters and Stevens families donated boats and nautical memorabilia beginning in 1996 when the society acquired the former Henderson Universalist Church for a museum. The society has eight wooden boats made in Henderson between the 1880s to 1940. The Historical Association of South Jefferson has promised the loan of four additional Henderson-made boats from its collection.

Northern Lights concert in Waddington on Friday

WADDINGTON The Waddington Summer Concert Series continues at 7 p.m. Friday with the Northern Lights Orchestra at Island View Park. Now in its fourth season, the north country ensemble has performed from Canton to Watertown and from Morristown to Henderson Harbor in arange of venues as diverse as concert halls, museums and outdoor pavilions. The NLO strives particularly to play in the regions smaller communities where orchestra concerts are not held frequently. The orchestras repertoire ranges from classical music by composers such as Vivaldi and Mozart to less common programs such as traditional Celtic tunes, movie music and the original works of north country composers. The programs reflect the orchestras philosophy of featuring music of broad appeal. The NLO sometimes adds less conventional instruments, such as guitar, electric bass and keyboard, to the traditional orchestral instruments. Northern Lights Orchestra members include professional musicians, music teachers, accomplished amateurs and students from Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties. NLO conductor and music director Christian Hosmer has conducted, taught and performed in Northern New York for more than 20 years. An alumnus of the Manhattan, Julliard and Crane (SUNY Potsdam) schools of music, he also serves on the faculties of St. Lawrence University, Canton, and Watertowns Trillium Music Center. The Waddington Summer Concert Series is made possible, in part, with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program, administered in Jefferson, Lewis, and St Lawrence counties by the St. Lawrence County Arts Council and this concert is also sponsored by SeaComm Federal Credit Union. Visitors are asked to bring lawn chairs for outdoor seating. In case of inclement weather, Friday evenings concert will be held at the Old Town Hall, Main Street.

MOIRA Summer performances at the pavilion, presented by the Town of Moira Historical Association, continue at Moira Town Park, corner of state Route 11 and county Route 5. A tour of the historic house and elegant garden of Karen and David Walton, 17428 Old Rome Road, will featured in a Historic House Tour and Garden Party, from 4 to 7 p.m. July 16, to benefit the Jefferson County Historical Society on its 125th anniversary. Friends of the Jefferson County Historical Society are sponsoring the event; the tour will be followed by a garden party including delicacies by Farm House Kitchen of Sackets Harbor along with selections of wine, beer, summer drinks and garden music. The proceeds raised will be used to help the JCHS continue to collect, preserve and present the treasures of our local history, said Bill Wood, the societys executive director. Admission to the event is a donation of $40 per person. Reservations are required by July 8. The rain date is July 17. For more information call Mr. Wood at 782-3491.

Playhouse, marking its 25th season, sets schedule of comedy, theater, jazz
SACKETS HARBOR The Lake Ontario Playhouse, 103 W. Main St., will headline comedian John DiCrosta, whose voice work is in the movie Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and other animated shows, June 30 through July 3 as part of its 25th season schedule of comedy, theater and jazz. Mr. DiCrosta, who was a warm-up act for Politically Incorrect and has performed on numerous other TV programs, is currently touring comedy clubs and theaters on the East Coast. Also on the Playhouse program will be David Goldstein who has appeared on Late Night with Conan OBrien. Shows, all at 9 p.m., will be Thursday, Friday, Saturday with a special presentation on Sunday. He performs at the top comedy clubs nationwide such asThe Borgata in Atlantic City, Carolines on Broadway in New York City and The Laugh Factory, and has performed standup in six countries.He has worked with the likes of Jerry Seinfeld, Larry the Cable Guy, Kevin Nealon, The Temptations, Aretha Franklin and Weird Al Yankovic. July 11 through 15, the Playhouse will
host Watertown Lyric Theaters summer theater camp, which will culminate in a performance of Jungle Book at 4 p.m. July 16. July 22 through Aug. 7, the Playhouse will presentthe musical Rent, with music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson, by special arrangement with Music Theatre International. Shows will be at 6 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $15. Also this summer, the playhouse will present Jazz Wednesdays, featuring the Jim Wiley Quartet, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Mr. Wiley is a music teacher at Indian River Central School, Philadelphia, and has beenpart of the local jazz community for decades. Admission to the concerts is free and the Playhouse is currently working on presenting poetry and other spoken word readings during the breaks in the jazz concerts.

JCC education activities can keep kids busy all summer

Do your children get bored easily during summer break? Jefferson Community College is holding a series of weeklong camps and workshops during July and August. Activities include creating magic with chemistry, learning to think like a detective, building Web pages, developing outdoor survival skills, creating art and much more.
