Medicinal Uses of Amla (

Phyllanthus emblica) Fresh fruit of Amla (Emblica Officinalis ) is refrigerant, diuretic and laxative. Green fruit is exceedingly acid. Fruit is also carminative and stomachic. Dried fruit is sour and astringent. Flowers are cooling and aperient. Bark is astringent. The herb is also aphrodisiac, hemostatic, nutritive tonic, rejuvenative (for Pitta). It increases red blood cell count. It is one of the highest natural source of Vitamin C (3,000 mg per fruit). Amla is used in the following forms: Decoction and Infusion of leaves and seeds; liquor, essential oil; confection; powder; paste and pickles. An astringent extract equal to catechu is prepared from the root by decoction and evaporation. As a vermifuge Juice of the fruit with honey is used. The recommended dose is from 1 to 3 drachms. To stimulate appetite Use pickles and preserves made from the green fruits. For irritability of the bladder, in retention of urine and to the forehead in cephalalgia Use a paste of the fruit alone or with Nelumbium speciosum, Saffron and rose water. Apply it over the affected region. As a febrifuge and in diabetes Use an infusion of the seeds For hiccup and for painful respiration Use juice or extract of the fruit combined with honey and pipli. For hemorrhage, diarrhea and dysentery Use dried fruit. A decoction prepared from the fruit combined with T. chebula and T. belerica is useful in chronic dysentery and biliousness, in doses of 1 oz. once or twice daily. For diarrhea of children A compound powder of the emblic seed, Chitrak root, chebulic myrobalan, pipli and palelone is given in suitable doses, according to age, in warm water twice daily, morning and at bed time. Tender shoots given in butter-milk cure indigestion and diarrhea; green fresh leaves combined with curds have a similar effect. Leaves are used as infusion with fenugreek seeds in chronic dysentery and as a bitter tonic.

Soak one tola of the seeds in a tinned vessel during the night. Grind it. Add cow's milk and take. This is a good remedy for biliousness. For anemia, jaundice and dyspepsia Use dried fruit with iron. A fermented liquor prepared from the root is used in jaundice, dyspepsia, cough, etc. Take 20 to 40 grains of Dhatri Leha for anemia, jaundice and dyspepsia. Dhatri Arista is used for jaundice, dyspepsia, indigestion, and cough. For burning in the vagina A mixture of the fruit juice and sugar is prescribed as a remedy for burning in the vagina. Juice of the bark combined with honey and turmeric is a remedy for gonorrhea. To stop nausea and vomiting A powder of the emblic seed and red sandalwood is given with honey. to stop. For bleeding of the nose Seed fried in ghee and ground in conjee is applied as Lep to the forehead to stop bleeding from the nose. For scabies or itch Apply the seed burnt, powdered and mixed in oil for scabies or itch. As a restorative invigorator Make a powder from an equal quantity of emblic seed and root of Withania somnifera. Add ghee and honey. Mix well. This is a restorative invigorator, especially in winter days. Combine half a drachm each of emblic seed and gokhru. Grind and make them into a powder. Mix with 15 grains of essence of Gulancha. Give this in early morning with ghee and sugar. This is a nutrient tonic.

Recent research shows that tulsi does have analgesic ( pain killer) properties similar to COX 2 inhibitor drugs. . Ursolic acid, a chemical in tulsi may have a role as antifertility ( contraceptive) agent in future. . It has antiviral, antibacterial, antitubercular, antifungal, antimalarial properties.

Lemon remedies: 1. Constipation and Body pain: Mix 2 teaspoons of lemon juice with 10 teaspoons of warm water and take it every day. This will provide relief from constipation and body pain. 2. Reduce Body Fat: Mix lemon juce with honey in equal proportion and take regularly in the morning. This helps to reduce weight and burn your body fat.

3. Mouth ulcer and Throat infection: Mix 1 part of lemon juice with 2 parts of water and gargle it for few minutes. This will cure your mouth ulcer and throat infection. 4. Stomach upset:

Ajwain (Carum copticum) is used as a medicine in stomach ailments. It has stimulant, tonic and carminative properties and the anti-spasmodic virtues of asafoetida. Medicinal Properties: Loss of Appetite: Mix and powder equal quantities of ajwain,saunf,ginger and salt.Mix a teaspoon of this mixture in boiled tice along with ghee and eat thrice a day. Colic Pains,Indigestion,Gas:Grind 2 tsp each ajwain and dried ginger into a fine powder.Add a little black salt.Take 1 tsp of this mixture with 1 teacup warm water frequently. Kidney-pain,renal colic: Mix and grind 1 tbsp black cumin 2 tsp ajwain and 1 tsp black salt into a fine powder.Add 1 tsp brown vinegar.Take 1 tsp of this mixture every hour till symptoms subside. Nasal congestion in children:Crush a fistful of ajwain and tie up in a cotton napkin and place it near the pillow. Common Cold,Congestion in the chest: Boil 1/2 tsp ajwain along with 1 pinch of turmeric powder, in half a cup of water.Cool.Add 1 tsp honey and drink.Inhale vapours of ajwain boiling in a pan of water. Cough: Mix 1/2 tsp ajwain seeds,2 cloves and a pinch of salt.Powder and sip with a little warm water frequently. Respiratory problem due to blockage of dried phlegm: Crush 2 tsp ajwain seeds.Mix in a glass of buttermilk and drink

In Ayurvedic literature Giloy is described as Amrita because of its innumerable medicinal properties and it is also said to increase the lifespan of humans by preventing them from many chronic diseases. Giloy is one of the most useful ayurvedic herb which acts as tonic and aphrodisiac, it is also an antihelminthic, anti-arthritic, anti-periodic, anti-pyretic, blood purifier, cardiac, carminative, digestive, diuretic an expectorant, stomachic, rejuvenating, appetizing and antiinflammatory. Starch from the roots of Giloy as well as from its stems can be used for chronic diarrhoea and dysentery. The juice of the fresh plant is diuretic and is used in gonorrhea. It is also useful for curing chronic fevers, gouts, vomiting, cardiac debility, skin diseases, leprosy, anemia, cough, asthma, jaundice, seminal weakness, uropathy and splenopathy. Medicinal uses: Skin diseases: Juice taken with neem, haldi and amla is very effective. Piles: Juice of Tinospora with butter milk is useful. Breast milk: Decoction of the stem is given to improve the quality of breast milk. Toxins: It is considered a best herb for clearing microcirculatory system. Its juice is very effective in removing both exogenous and endogenous toxins. It clears out the brain toxin that inhibits mental function.

Asthma: The root and bark with whey is used in the treatment of respiratory troubles particularly in asthma. Diabetes: Juice is taken in high quantities. Excessive bleeding during menstruation, bleeding after abortion or delivery: Stem, leaves and roots can be used. About 5 g each of leaves and roots are crushed together to extract the juice. Consume 2 cup of this juice for a few days after diluting it with water (2 to 3 ml in half a cup of water) till the condition improve. Malaria and other fever : Decoction of the stem with pipli (Piper longum) and honey is taken. Indigestion: The juice with honey or the paste of leaves can be given with butter milk. Conjuctivitis and cataract : In some parts of India the juice is applied inside the eyes.

Healing Power and Curative Properties and benefits of Datura


The dried leaves and seeds of datura are used in the British and the United States Pharmacopoeia as antispasmodic under critical conditions of asthma and whooping cough. Datura possesses properties analogous to those of belladonna. It counteracts spasmodic disorders and induces deep sleep. Asthma Datura is very useful in asthma, when the smoke from the burning leaves is inhaled. The leaves rolled into cigarettes can be smoked to relieve asthmatic attacks. Malaria Datura fruit is a specific remedy for phlegmatic and bilious types of malarial fever. A desired quantity of the fruit should be placed in an earthen pot and covered with a plaster composed of cloth and clay. It should be parched in to to 12 grams of cow dung cakes. When the fire gets extinguished and the pot is cold, the burnt fruit should removed, powdered and kept safely in a phial for use in malarial fever. Heart Disorders The herb is valuable remedy for heart disorders. It relieves cardiac pains, distress, palpitation and aortic disorders. Earache The leaves of the herb are useful in the treatment 01 earache. About 125 grams each of the juice of datura leaves and sesame oil should be boiled in a tin vessel on gentle fire. When half of the juice has evaporated, seven leaves of gigantic swallow wort (akh) should be put in it after smearing them with oil and sprinkling with powdered salt. The leaves should be boiled till they begin to char. This oil is then filtered through a coarse cloth and preserved in a bottle. A few drops of this oil in the ear cure earache and suppurative conditions of the ear. Impotency Datura is useful in impotency. The seeds of 15 ripe fruits should be extracted and boiled in eight kilograms of cow's milk on gentle fire. This milk should then be made into curd in the usual way and churned the next morning to extract butter which is stored in a broad-mouthed bottle. This butter, massaged every morning and evening on the penis and the spine, will provide the desired effect. It is also used as an oral medicine. Four grains with betel leaf can be taken. The use of this butter both externally and internally in this way will gradually promote health and vigor and restore absolute fitness in the body. Baldness A preparation made from datura seeds with other ingredients is useful in patchy baldness. A paste made with datura seeds, liquorice, saffron and milk cream is heated in coconut

oil thoroughly till the solid mass converts to a charred powder. The oil when applied on bald patches has the power to stimulate hair growth. As datura is poisonous, hands should be washed thoroughly after handling the oil. The mixture should not be used on the scalp of children. Problem of Breast Milk Secretion The herb is highly beneficial in checking secretion of breast milk. In case of an unfortunate death of a newly born baby, accumulation of milk in the breasts of. the mother poses a problem, causing severe pain. In such a case, warmed leaves of the datura tied on the breasts will help dry the milk without any pain and difficulty. Just 2 or 3 applications will bring the desired results.

Herbal Medicines for the Treatment of the Various Disorders


For sleep - Paste of coriander leaves should be applied on forehead to induce sleep or else, take orally fresh juice of leaves with some sugar-candy. Excessive menstrual bleeding - can be checked by taking rice water, mixed with fresh juice of leaves. Vitamin deficiency and night-discharge - can be brought under control by taking coriander seeds powder with some sugarcandy, one teaspoonful each, morning and evening for seven days. For belching, nasal bleeding and palpitation - Ground equal quantity of seeds and sugar to be used in disorders. For digestion - Ground to powdered from black pepper and coriander seeds, adding some salt to taste, to improve digestion and also to remove other stomach disorders. In excessive thirst - Pasted coriander seeds are soaked in some water for a couple of hours and this water is taken with a little sugar and honey to quench longstanding thirst. In burning sensation - Water prepared with coriander the same way as above is taken only with sugar in case of burning sensation either on the body or in passing urine. In jaundice - Add 2 tsp of coriander seeds to a litre of water and add 2 tsp white cumin seeds to it. Leave this mixture overnight. On the next day , take a glass of this infusion twice or thrice a day after sweetening it with some palm candy. Repeat this for a couple of weeks until urine colour returns to normal. In fever - Take coriander tea prepared with coriander decoction, very little milk and sugar. This causes sweating and brings down temperature. In gout - powder equal quantities of coriander and cumin seeds and add a sufficient amount of jaggery to it to make a confectionery. Make small balls of this and eat one thrice a day to get relief from the pain in gout. In indigestion and colicky pain - Make a decoction of coriander seeds and dry ginger and consume thrice a day to stimulate digestion and relieve pain.

In cough and breathing difficulty - Mix a tsp of fine powder of coriander and saunph in a glass of rice wash to relieve cough and difficulty in breathing especially in children. In pregnancy - Giving coriander decoction to the pregnant woman from the fifth month onwards promotes flow of urine and prevents oedema or swelling of the feet, usually noticed from that month of pregnancy onwards. As a coolant - During summer, soak aniseeds, coriander seeds and poppy seeds overnight. In the morning, grind the seeds in the same water and filter it to obtain a super coolant drink for the body. In conjunctivitis - Make a decoction of coriander seeds, cool it and use it as a wash for infected eyes to bring down pain and inflammation. Do this twice a day for a noticeable difference .

A face pack of fresh pudina leaves cures pimples and blackheads and is a very good moisturizer.
