INTRODUCTION
AIM:The main aim of our project REMOTE OPERATED HOME APPLIANCE is that we can turn on or turn off any home appliance (lamp, fan, air cooler, radio etc.) from a TV, VCD, VCR, Air Conditioner or DVD remote control by connecting our circuit to the appliances.

REMOTE OPERATED HOME APPLIANCE

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
All the remote controls generate frequency of 38 kHz and our infrared receiver TSOP1738 receives only frequency of 38 kHz. And we have used this infrared receiver (TSOP1738) because TV, VCD, VCR, Air Conditioner or DVD remote controls which generate frequency of 38khz are available everywhere thats why this project can be used everywhere. The heart of the project is IC CD4017 which is a decade or Johnson counter and also works as a bistable multivibrator. We have also used a 12volt relay as an automatic switch which is controlled by IC CD4017 and transistors. The circuit can be activated from up to 10 meters. It is very easy to build and can be assembled on a breadboard or a general-purpose PCB. It can be easily connected to any home appliance.

WORKING
The 38 kHz infrared (IR) rays generated by the remote control are received by IR receiver module TSOP1738 of the circuit. Pin 1 of TSOP1738 is connected to ground, pin 2 is connected to the power supply through resistor 47 and the output is taken from pin 3. The output signal is applied to transistor T1 (BC558) through capacitor of capacitance 100f. The transistor T1 (BC558) amplifies this output signal. The amplified signal is fed to clock pin 14 of decade counter IC CD4017 (IC1). The capacitor C2 of capacitance 0.1f is connected to transistor T1 (BC558) and pin 14 of decade counter through resistor of resistance of 220K. Pin 8 of IC1 is grounded, pin 16 is connected to Vcc and pin 3 is connected to LED1 (red) through resistance 330 which glows to indicate that the appliance is off. The output of IC1 is taken from its pin 2. LED2 (green) connected to pin 2 is used to indicate the on state of the appliance through resistor of 330. Transistor T2 (BC548) connected to pin 2 of IC1CD4017 through resistor of resistance 1K which drives relay RL1. Diode 1N4007 (D1) acts as a freewheeling diode and it prevents the components from back EMF & also protects relay. The appliance to be controlled is connected between the pole of the relay and neutral terminal of mains. It gets connected to live terminal of AC mains via normally opened (N/O) contact when the relay energises.

MAJOR COMPONENTS USED

VOLTAGE REGULATOR IC LM7805 12V - RELAY

DECADE COUNTER IC CD4017

The CD4017 is a 5-stage divide-by-10 Johnson counter with 10 decoded outputs and a carry out bit. These counters are cleared to their zero count by a logical ``1'' on their reset line. These counters are advanced on the positive edge of the clock signal when the clock enable signal is in the logical ``0'' state. The configuration of the CD4017 permits medium speed operation and assures a hazard free counting sequence. The 10 decoded outputs are normally in the logical ``0'' state and go to the logical ``1'' state only at their respective time slot. Each decoded output remains high for 1 full clock cycle. The carry-out signal completes a full cycle for every 10 clock input cycles and is used as a ripple carry signal to any succeeding stages.

VOLTAGE REGULATOR IC LM7805

DESCRIPTION DIAGRAM
The LM7805 is three terminal positive voltage regulator available in the TO-220/D-PAK package and with fixed output voltage of 5V It employs safe operating area protection, making it essentially indestructible. If adequate heat sinking is provided, they can deliver over 1A output current.

RELAY
DESCRIPTION
A relay is an electrically operated switch. Many relays use an electromagnet to operate where it is necessary to control a circuit by a low-power signal, or where several circuits must be controlled by one signal. Relays with calibrated operating characteristics and sometimes multiple operating coils are used to protect electrical circuits from overload or faults; in modern electric power systems these functions are performed by digital instruments still called "protection relays".

APPLICATION OF RELAY
Control a high-voltage circuit with a low-voltage signal, as in some types of modems or audio amplifiers. Control a high-current circuit with a low-current signal, as in the starter solenoid of an automobile. Detect and isolate faults on transmission and distribution lines by opening and closing circuit breakers (protection relays).

APPLICATIONS
It is used to switch on/off night bulb using remote control when you lay down on the bed. It can also be used by those patients in the hospitals or home who are not able to stand on their feet to switch on/off the appliances like bulbs, fans etc..

FUTURE ENHANCEMENT
In future we are planning to operate more than one appliance by remote control by using more relays in our circuit. And we are also working on our project to control the speed of the fan using the remote.

CONCLUSION
We have learnt about the working of lot of electronic components like IC CD4017 as a bistable multivibrator, TSOP1738, transistor BC558, BC448, LED, freewheeling diode, relay, bridge rectifier, voltage regulator IC LM7805 etc. We have also learnt how to make layout of the circuit in express PCB. And how to make connections between the component and also the soldering process. We have learnt how to convert the AC power supply into constant DC power supply using LM7805 IC, 9-0-9 transformer, capacitor, and bridge rectifier. We have learnt the negative development process, PCB manufacturing process, drilling process, mounting and soldering process.
