Lets Pay It Forward

This is the first chapter of the book. In this chapter author try to dream about India with a wonderful future, people from all nations adhere to the example set by our nation and want to live in India. Then the author comes in reality and said that why cant we achieve this dream. Then he said that we have to create a climate that rewards honesty and hard work. Author says that every nation and society carry a brand equity in the form of their values. And a country needs responsible citizens who will live accordingly to build and uphold the integrity of nation. But then he arise a question that ARE WE DOING SO? Author also emphasizes that youth is the real agents of change. Next, author says that where is an Indian? One can find Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi etc. he said that feeling of regionalism, communalism, and the absence of strong national sentiment plague the nation. Today in India, the concerned citizen feels helpless and lost, he is not confused but he is frustrated. He can neither be the part of the system and neither is apart from the system. Then author comes to the end of the chapter and said that who will Bell the Cat? He says the giving advices are easy but who will bring the change. We have to be collective and we have to help each other to be successful. No one can survive in isolation. He said that one help another with a thought in mind that when I will be in need, I will also get the help. This is a kind of selfishness but this kind of selfishness is healthy. Then author put a question that When and Where should we start? And he himself gives the answer that

WHAT BETTER TIME THAN NOW? WHAT BETTER PLACE THAN INDIA?

Patriotism and Treachery

In this chapter author deals with the questions like Is the Patriotism is national pride or chauvinism? and Is defence spending justified in a world that needs humanitarian services? Author says every citizen must be proud of their country and this must reflect through their work and behavior. He said that pride in the country encompasses every area of ones life. He defines two kind of citizens in a country Patriot and Traitor. He further defines the two types of Patriots:
1. Seasonal Patriot: This type of person talks of the nation above self, but in practice,

they put self above the nation. For him, patriotism is a matter of convenience.
2. True Patriot: He always ready to do, whatever the nation demands to do. He has

no limits; he can go to any length. Then he defines two types of Traitors:

1. Active Traitors: They sell their motherland in the marketplace for personal gains.

2. Passive Traitors: They watch their motherland being sold and remain silent. Every society has its traitors who betray their nation for lust and luxury. Such people with inferiority complexes and ego problems want power, wealth and status at any cost. This is how we lost our independence to begin with. In the end author has made a wish that there should be a law where traitors are not allowed to touch the national flag and disgrace it.

Parasites in Action
In this chapter author said that a persons character is not only judged by the friends he had but also by the enemies he has. He said that we often hear that he is good leader but his followers are bad. The question that arises is who picked his followers. It seems evident that in life we get friends or followers who are not the kind of people we want, but the kind of people we are. Value Based Leadership: India has produced great leaders with high principles in every sphere of life. Author defines four types of leaders:

1. Political Leader Sardar Patel 2. Social Leader Raja Ram Mohan Roy 3. Spiritual Leader Swami Vivekananda 4. Corporate Leader JRD Tata
He also reveals the relations between the politicians and priests. The nexus between the priest and the politician is so ancient and strong that they keep inventing new ways of exploiting the ignorant and the innocent. However, it is not just in India that we have problems caused by religion. In the west, people are also turning away from their religion. Bad politicians survive on lies and false promises. Their greatest ability lies is paying with emotions, creating confusion and conflict. Politics and Priesthood are responsible for most of that which is ugly in society. Corrupt politicians create unrest and watch destruction as sadists. In a corrupt society, the real criminals are the corrupt politicians and not those who are suffering in jails. Unprincipled human beings are likely to continue being driven by greed to exploit their fellow beings even on the name of religion. But that does not mean that a person has to be suspicious of everyone in the whole world.

Social Capital
Progress, in a country is, measured not by industry or infrastructure or the wealth that its citizens possess, but by the quality of life they lead. Civilization on the other hand, is measured by the quality of character of citizens. The strength of a society is its social capital. To sum up, families, communities and schools produce and distribute social values. Collectively, it is called SOCIAL CAPITAL. A society is a summed up reflection of its members, with some things binding them together. Living in a society, therefore, requires everyone to follow rules, which need to be understood. In most societies, a family is defined by marriage that gives social sanction to the sexual union of a man and women with certain dos and donts. Deep beneath the surface of a good family are certain fundamental values, such as fidelity, loyalty, responsibility, authority, obedience, justice and caring. Give your children the right direction by being a good role model. If we do not teach the honesty by our actions, we are compounding problems for the coming generations. Irresponsible people are more interested in individual profits than individual profits than individual responsibility. A country becomes poor when it falls in spirit and insight. Narrow and negative politics have destroyed the very foundations of our civic setup and deprived it of its reason for existence. Citizens, who value their privileges over principles, end up losing both.

Citizens: Crooks or Custodians?

Crook: A crook is a professional swindler and a dubious character. Custodian: A custodian is trustworthy person, who acts as a guardian. Here the author was saying that in a society there are two types of people are living, one who always thinks about himself and the other who are always strives to help others when there is a need. Author defines four different types of bones a person have: 1. A wishbone: He only wishes, dreams and does nothing 2. A knuckle bone: his only function is to knocking down everything.
3. A jaw bone: he is only a talker, not doer.

4. A backbone: who uses his backbone to oppress and bully the innocent. He defines that a good citizen is someone who uses his wishbone for a vision, knuckle bone for hard work, jaws to persuade others and backbone that demonstrates courage. A society depends more on its citizens character than their intelligence. So to become a good citizen character plays an important role. Where in one example he has mentioned a baby who was a singer but she never sang for herself but for the people who were suffering from heart disease, where as in the other example he has mentioned the two persons who were earning money by cheating passerby by their mischievous activity.

Third World or Third Class?

In this chapter author deals with the different negative behaviors of the persons, and compare them with the termites that neither they themselves eat the fruit, nor will they let anyone else eat them. He said most of the third world countries are not called so because of their economic stage, but because many of them behave in third class way. Author gives three steps to evaluate a situation: 1. Examine 2. Diagnose 3. Prescribe The prescription is only as good as the correct examination and the right diagnose. If we cannot be honest with ourselves, what is the need of this evaluation? He defines five patterns of behavior that hurts our society: 1. Ego 2. Jealousy 3. Indifference 4. A fatalistic attitude
5. The Hindu concept of prayashchit or atonement.

Then author says about social service and politics that many people says that they want to do the social work, but will not get involved in politics. Author has a question that how can you separate the two? After this, author raises the question of charity and philanthropy and said that there is a distinction between the idle, lazy and the deserving poor.

The Current State of India

In this chapter author put the emphasis on the importance of unity. Today we were facing many problems due the lack of unity. The major threat to India staying united is the ever growing trend of labeling people from other states in the country as outsiders. He gives the example of United States of America, that it was ought to be the most un united because of its heterogeneous population. But they have managed well to integrate their society. This is where we have failed miserably. He also suggests that there must be a binding factor because without a binding factor UNITY IN DIVERSITY is a hollow phrase. Then he discussed that does Indian problems actually are unique? And comes to the conclusion that NO! Indias problems are not really unique. He also quotes the example of Non Cooperation Movement, that when it happened it was not only the Punjab affair, it was taken as a blow on all over the India. And after the death of Lokmanya Tilak it movement start in all over the India and reflects a great picture of unity.

Corruption
Author deals with corruption in this chapter. Author tells that many ancient civilizations destroy themselves as a result of rampant corruption in its various forms. Then author tells what is corruption and causes of corruption. Types of Corruption: 1. Corruption anti national 2. Corruption anti poor 3. Corruption anti development 4. Corruption a matter of life and death He says that the proof of integrity lies in its practice. It does need to be proved. And when citizens believe that corruption is intolerable and not inevitable, we will see a different India. Corruption is a very comprehensive evil, as it is a common tool for all anti social activities. We can never get rid of corruption unless we address its causes. The unique point of corruption is that it occurs out of: 1. Need (for survival) 2. Greed (lack of morality) Corruption leads to an increase in rules and regulations. It delays justice, which in turn, benefits the corrupt, who are in power.

Freedom Is Not Free

Every generation needs to earn its own freedom. Freedom is not like an ancestral property. It must be earned, sustained and strengthened, generation after generation. A healthy society needs the following not only to survive but also to thrive: 1. Vision: Respect and dignity for every citizen, thats his birthright. 2. Mission: To bring freedom through EDUCATION and JUSTICE. 3. Objective: To ensure good governance through good people and good laws. The meaning of FREEDOM has not changed till today. It means protection against intimidation. It means rule of law through justice and fairness. It is synonymous to equal opportunity. EDUCATION does not mean teaching people; an educated individual is one who has the ability to differentiate between right and wrong, good and evil. Education is important because educated people are easy to lead but hard to enslave. Higher literacy will curb the corruption. According to a study in 1997, Kerala was the least corrupt state in India. This is just because of higher literacy rate in Kerala. JUSTICE is truth in action. People want justice, not charity. In a rough estimate 73% of inmates await trial. Many of them may be innocent. They need somebody to stand for them, then why not us? We boast our motto, Satyameva Jayate. The big question is WHEN?

Country First
All positive change requires sacrifice and discipline. The path is full of risks and obstacles. Our patience and resolve will be put to test. The cost of freedom is always high, but concerned citizens have always paid the price. There must be a citizens charter that provides for compensation to citizens in case of failure of a government department to perform. The Country First action plan shall be achieved through Public Interest Litigations and public support to enforce justice. The thrust of the Country First would be bringing about good governance through good laws and good people.

Criticism
The way he explained the already known and unknown things to me, in a coherent, lucid, simple, different and innovative way would definitely inspire and benefit persons of all walks of life, who get an opportunity to glimpse through this book. The contents of all the chapters are enriched and supported by facts and evidences from already happened real life incidences in the recent past and serves as an eye opener for anyone who happened to read this book. Only one thing which I dont like in this book is the n number of examples given. Examples certainly makes easy to understand the book. but too much examples on a same topic sound monotonous.

Conclusion
This book makes one to understand the real concept and value of freedom which has to be hard earned, strengthened and sustained by all citizens, generations after generations. This book shows the real mirror of our situation after approx. half a decade after independence. This book shows that were we are, and where should we have to be. And also tells us that why, we are not in that position? We can learn a lot from this book and also realize the price of freedom we had paid and what we have to do to be free in real sense.
