Its about a diverse range of expertise, supported by advanced education and research
Ottawas growing digital media sector currently exceeds 250 companies and has expertise in areas that include video and console gaming; animation and visual FX; mobile communications; e-learning and education; film production; visualization and simulation; and television and broadcasting. The cluster is supported by an impressive advanced education and research infrastructure thats right next door? providing a wealth of innovation and technical expertise. Here are some examples.
? The University of Ottawas School of Information Technology and Engineering (SITE) offers a
vibrant research environment that brings together the disciplines of electronics, computer and software engineering and computer science. With more than 70 researchers and more than 400 students, the school has strong ties to local industry, where collaboration is key. SITEs Distributed and Collaborative Virtual Environments Research (DISCOVER) Laboratory, which opened in 2002, is currently engaged in research projects involving 3D physical modeling and animation, distributed and collaborative virtual environments, intelligent sensor networks and ubiquitous com, multimedia computing and communications, and tele-haptics. Dr. Nicolas Georganas, one of the labs founders, was recently awarded a $1.2 million grant from the Government of Ontario to investigate new applications to support gaming on cell phones with advanced haptic interaction, gesture recognition and media adaptation.
? Carleton Universitys Centre for Advanced Studies in Visualization, Simulation and
Modelling? launched in 2005? brings together an interdisciplinary team of Carleton researchers from cognitive science, psychology, engineering and architecture who are currently working on a $28 million project that focuses on virtual reality simulations. The project has the support of the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the Ontario Innovation Trust and 15 industry partners including CAE Inc., a leading provider of integrated training solutions and advanced simulation and controls technologies.
? Carleton University's Film Studies Program is one of the largest and most respected of its kind in
Canada. The program offers unparalleled access to research materials by taking full advantage of its location in the nation's capital. The program also has important links to the Moving Image, Library and Archives Canada, the Canadian Film Institute, the Ottawa International Animation Festival, the Ottawa International Silent and Early Sound Film Festival and the Independent Filmmakers Cooperative of Ottawa.
? Algonquin College's School of Media and Design has programs in animation, broadcasting, game
exacting standards of the animation industry. Most faculty members have industry experience, and the program's advisory board includes local studio owners, producers, directors and artists who ensure the program produces graduates who are industry ready.

? The two-year Broadcasting Program covers all aspects of the television production
process and gives equal importance to the creative and technical aspects of television production.
? Algonquin's Game Development Program is the first in Canada concentrating on
game design and development to be recognized by the Ontario Ministry of Education. The program responds to market demands for game developers to work in the entertainment, education, government and consumer products sectors. Here, students train to create games of strategy, skill, education and entertainment.
? The two-year Interactive Multimedia Developer Program is a direct response to
applicant and employer demand that combines text, graphics, sound and animation? the heart and soul of design in electronic form.
? In collaboration with Carleton University, Algonquin also offers a Bachelor of Information
Technology Interactive Multimedia and Design program that prepares students for a broad range of career opportunities including computer animation, video game design and development, digital video and audio effects, user interface design, multimedia development, dynamic web application design and e-commerce.
? With headquarters in Ottawa, the National Research Council's Institute for Information
Technology Visual Information Technology Group engages in research, development and technology transfer activities to enable access to 3D information about the real world. Group staff conduct research in three main areas:
? The 3D Technologies Program has developed internationally recognized, high
resolution, 3D digitizing and modeling technologies to capture the shape and colour of objects, people and environments using patented, laser-based, 3D cameras at speeds of 10,000 to 10 million coordinates per second.
? Collaborative Virtual Environments focus on the convergence of computer graphics,
computer vision, broadband communications, human computer interfaces and computer supported cooperative work. This area of research has the potential of changing the way teams create, communicate, manipulate and disseminate information in collaborative projects and can significantly enhance the access, sharing and creation of information.
? The recent diffusion of 3D digitizing techniques and computer assisted design means
these new 3D objects need to be stored, indexed and described. The 3D Data Mining and Management project is a content-based approached aimed at facilitating the analysis, comparison, clustering and retrieval of 3D objects.

Student Animation Festival was introduced in 1997alternating with the larger, biennial OIAF. In 2005, when the OIAF became an annual event, the student festival was incorporated into the main program. A two-day Television Animation Conference was added to the festival in 2002. ? At the provincial level, the Computer Animation Studios of Ontario is a new industry association that seeks the support of government and private-sector partners in growing the computer animation and visual effects industry in Ontario. ? At the local level, the Ottawa-Gatineau Film and Television Development Corporation is a not-for-profit organization that promotes the growth of the region's multimedia industry and that facilitates film and television productions in the Outaouais and the National Capital Region. ? The Independent Filmmakers Cooperative of Ottawa, founded in 1991, is the only organization in the region that provides area filmmakers with the facilities, training and funds required to make Super 8, 16mm and 35mm films. ? SAW Video Production Co-op is an artist-run centre that supports groundbreaking independent video and media art. Co-op members have access to affordable facilities and a wide range of programs that support innovative ideas around form, content and style. ? The Canadian Screen Training Centre is a non-profit organization that advances the development of the Canadian film, television and new media industry through intensive, short duration workshops for beginners as well as established industry professionals.
