Julie Payette Public School

Student Code of Conduct
Rver. Viser. Devenir. Dream. Aspire. Become.
The Student Code of Conduct for Julie Payette Public School is designed to provide a framework to ensure that our school is a safe, productive learning environment for all. The Code of Conduct establishes the level of behaviour expected for all, so that we have the best possible school where success and achievement are reached through cooperation, courtesy and respect. We ask families to review this Code of Conduct so that all parties are familiar with school expectations and procedures. We strive to embed Character Education into our classrooms and practise Progressive Discipline on a daily basis.

Respect, Responsibility, Teamwork, Perseverance, Kindness, Honesty, Courage, Empathy, Optimism, Integrity
As our students embark on a voyage of discovery where the destination is unknown, they will learn about themselves and about the world we live in. We, as a community, are committed to ensure that every student has the opportunity to achieve his/her highest academic, social, and emotional potential. As a school community, teachers and parents have an on-going responsibility to prepare students for their role as citizens of the world by working together as a team, sharing ideas, successes and challenges.

Student Responsibilities Students are to be treated with respect and dignity. In return, they must demonstrate respect for themselves, for others, and for the responsibilities of citizenship through acceptable behaviour. Respect and responsibility are demonstrated when a student: comes to school prepared, on time and ready to learn; shows respect for themselves, others and for those in authority; refrains from bringing anything to school that may compromise the safety of others; follows the established rules and takes responsibility for his or her own actions. We believe that students can learn to manage their own behaviour. All of us make mistakes and mistakes are an opportunity to learn. Staff members will offer guidance as students learn to meet their needs in appropriate ways. Teachers and support staff play a critical role by modeling respect and showing support for the above expectations.

Our goal is student self-discipline.

Standards of Behaviour The Durham District School Board and Julie Payette P.S. support the provincial standards of behaviour which includes respect, civility, responsible citizenship and physical safety. All participants involved in the publicly funded school system students, parents or guardians, volunteers, teachers and other staff members are included in this Code of Conduct whether they are on school property, on school buses or at school-authorized events or activities. Recognition and acceptance of, and sensitivity toward, ethno-cultural diversity are expectations of and within the school community. Respect, Civility and Responsible Citizenship All school members must: Respect and comply with all applicable federal, provincial and municipal laws; Demonstrate honesty and integrity; Respect differences in people, their ideas and opinions; Treat one another with dignity and respect at all times, and especially when there is disagreement; Respect and treat others fairly, regardless of their race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age or disability; Respect the rights of others; Show proper care and regard for school property and the property of others; Take appropriate measures to help those in need; Respect persons who are in a position of authority; Respect the need of others to work in an environment of learning and teaching. Physical Safety All school members must: Not be in possession of any weapon, including but not limited to firearms; Not use any object to threaten or intimidate another person; Not cause injury to any person with an object; Not be in possession of, or under the influence of, or provide others with, alcohol or illegal drugs; Not inflict or encourage others to inflict bodily harm on another person; Seek staff assistance, if necessary, to resolve conflict peacefully. Bullying Prevention The school community at Julie Payette P.S. is committed to providing a positive school climate and a culture of respect. Bullying of any kind is not tolerated. If bullying does occur, students need to report it and know that incidents will be dealt with promptly and effectively. Bullying is a relationship problem that requires a relationship solution. The Ontario Ministry of Education Definition defines bullying as, a form of repeated, persistent, aggressive behaviour that is directed at an individual(s) that is intended to cause (or should be known to cause) fear, distress, and/or harm to another persons body, feelings, self-esteem, or reputation. Bullying occurs in a context where there is a real or perceived power imbalance. (PPM 144)

Attendance It is the duty of parents to ensure that their children are regular and punctual in their attendance at school. Students who arrive at school late must report to the office prior to going to their classroom. Please encourage good habits early by ensuring that children are absent only when it is absolutely necessary. Students should be drop off on time so that they have the opportunity to walk around the school and line up for prompt entry. All students should arrive at school between 7:50-8:00 in the morning and before 11:50 in the afternoon. Serious attendance problems will be referred to the attendance counselor. Safe Arrival Program and School Attendance The Safe Arrival Program has been established to ensure that all of our students are either safely at home (with a parent/guardian), or safely at school. Parents are requested to contact the school at 905-668-2225 if their child is going to be absent or late. All attempts to contact parents will be made when an unexplained student absence occurs. If no indication is given that a child is to be absent, we will telephone the home, the workplace, or the emergency contact person named in order to determine the childs whereabouts. It is the parent/guardians responsibility to provide the school with complete and current information to enable us to make any necessary contacts. Should we be unable to determine the whereabouts of a child, the police will be contacted. For appointments, be sure to send a note beforehand to your childs teacher. All late arrivals MUST report to the office for an Admittance Slip before they proceed to their classroom. Students who have multiple unexcused lates will be required to make up the time after school. Students not participating in class excursions or school events are expected to attend school on that day. Assignments will be left by the homeroom teacher and the student will be allowed to work in another classroom for the duration of the trip. If the student is not participating and will not be attending school, a note is required from the parent. When it is necessary to pick up your child for an appointment during school hours, please follow this procedure: Send a note of explanation beforehand to your childs teacher. When it is time to pick up your child, come to the SCHOOL OFFICE. Please do not go directly to your childs classroom. Your child will be waiting at the office or the secretary will call your child for you. Be sure to sign out your child in the record book with the secretary before leaving. When a student is absent, it is their responsibility to catch up on missed work. ** Please note that older brothers and sisters are not permitted to sign out students without notification from parents or guardians Entry/Exit To ensure an orderly entry and exit, all students have been assigned an entry and exit door. The front doors are for the exclusive use of guests, parents and staff. Students returning to school and reporting to the office after an appointment may use the front doors. Parents and guardians (including older siblings) are asked to drop off or meet the students outside at the appropriate doors.

Visitors/Passes All visitors to Julie Payette P.S. are asked to report to the office where they will sign up and receive a Visitors Pass. Students are required to have a pass when leaving their classroom during instructional time. Lunch Hour Procedures Students who stay for lunch will eat in their classrooms. Eating lunch at school is a privilege and the following basic expectations are for all students who stay for lunch. Lunch Room Expectations Students who stay for lunch will stay in their assigned classroom. Students must sit and are expected to behave in an acceptable manner which respects the rights of others to enjoy a peaceful lunch. Students will clean up after eating lunch. Students must eat lunch and snacks inside the building. Students are to show respect and follow the direction of the supervisors in charge.

Students are expected to bring litterless lunches and snacks to help reduce the amount of garbage collected. The school strongly encourages the use of Boomerang Lunches. A boomerang lunch means that everything a child brings to school for lunch returns home with the child each day, including any garbage produced by the student. The school is not provided with green boxes for composting so any organic waste must go home with the student. Students must not bring glass bottles to school. During inclement weather, a double bell will ring and the students will be admitted early or remain inside at recess and during the lunch hour. However, parents must ensure that their child is properly dressed for current or forecasted weather conditions. During indoor recesses, quiet activities will be encouraged (e.g., board games, puzzles, crosswords, etc.). Students not following the lunch room expectations may lose their privilege to eat in their classroom for lunch. A note from the parent is required when students leave the school premises at lunch. Students who leave for lunch are expected to return to school at 11:50 during inclement weather. Allergy Alert The Julie Payette P.S. community supports the philosophy of inclusion and will endeavour to create a safe school environment for all staff and students. As such, we require your assistance and cooperation to make our school an Allergy Alert School. Due to life threatening allergies for some students, we ask that no peanut or nut (cashew, pecan, walnut, hazelnut, almond) products or byproducts be brought to school. This includes products marked, may contain traces of nuts or manufactured in a facility that also produces nut products, and that any caregiver who may prepare your childs lunch be advised of our Nut Alert status. Thank you for your continued cooperation in promoting the safety and security of our school. In accordance with the Durham District School Board guidelines, WOWbutter, a peanut butter replacement product, is not permitted within our school. Please ensure that your child doesnt bring this product in his/her lunches.

Health Conditions Please notify the office if your child suffers from asthma, allergies or any other special condition that could affect health or learning. Accidents If a student requires medical attention for a physical injury, an Incident Report Form will be completed at the office. Parents will be contacted. If parents cannot be reached, the school will take the appropriate emergency action to ensure the safety and well being of the student. ***Students must walk at all times in the hallways, on the stairs and in the classrooms to prevent accidents. Medication It is very important that you notify the office if your child(ren) take(s) any medication (epipen, Ritalin, asthma medication, etc.). All medication brought to school must be kept at the school office. Please be advised that we need a physicians and a parent/guardians signature before administering any medication to students. A Request for Administration of Medication form must be completed, and will be kept on file in the school office. These forms are available from the school office and the website. ***Students who need epipens must keep two at school, one to carry/keep in the classroom and one stored in the office. Child Custody Please inform the office if both parents wish to receive school report cards, special notes, etc. We will make every effort to ensure that both parents receive the necessary information. If you have a court order that limits the right of one parent in matters such as custody or visitation, please provide the office with a copy of legal restriction rights. Unless a copy of your court order is on file, we must provide equal access to both parents. To avoid any unnecessary problems that may arise, please ensure that the school has all proper documentation. Dress Code The school dress code assists in the creation of a positive learning environment. Appropriate workplace attire and personal grooming reflect respect for oneself and for others. The following guidelines will assist parents and students in selecting clothes that are appropriate for school. Clothing must be free of logos, slogans, phrases or pictures that display disrespectful language, violence, drug use, racism, sexism or ethnic prejudice Cleavage and midriff must be covered. Shorts and skirts must reach below fingertips when standing upright. Revealing clothing, exposed undergarments, muscle shirts, crop tops, and spaghetti straps are not to be worn at school. All head gear should be removed upon entering the school building. Students not following these guidelines will be required to change clothing. Administration will make final decisions regarding appropriate dress. Younger students are encouraged to bring a change of clothing and keep it at the bottom of their backpack. A change of clothes may be required in the event a student falls in slush, mud or puddles during outside play.

Care of School Property The facilities (desks, lockers, etc.), texts, books, and equipment in the school are supplied by the Durham District School Board for the use of staff and students. Although the use of equipment is given without charge to the individual, this equipment is not the property of the student. Books and equipment have a certain life expectancy. It is the policy of the school and the Board that if a book or piece of equipment issued to a student for his/her use is lost or willfully damaged, that book or piece of equipment must be replaced at a price determined by the school. Lockers Intermediate students will be provided with lockers and are expected to keep them locked. Lockers are at all times property of the Board and are to be used to store school related materials and authorized personal items such as outer garments, footwear, lunch, etc. Students are solely responsible for the contents of their lockers. Administration has the authority with reasonable suspicion, to search personal property and lockers. Students and parents are expected to read and sign a locker agreement before lockers are assigned. Intermediate students may use lockers at entry, recess and lunch times only. Electronic Devices Personal electronic devices that are used inappropriately inside of schools during the normal school day are disruptive to the teaching and learning environment. The privacy and personal dignity of others could be violated by the inappropriate use of personal electronic devices to text message, social network, and/or share digital media. In addition, communication through personal electronic devices during class time interferes with teaching and learning. An exception to this occurs when the teacher has approved the use of specific technology for purposeful instruction. Unless deemed appropriate by the school administration for educational purposes, it is the practice of the Durham District School Board that the use of personal electronic devices is prohibited during the school day on school property. Personal electronic devices may be utilized off school property or in designated areas and during times assigned by the school. The Durham District School Board cannot assume the liability for stolen personal electronic devices. Yard Supervision Yard supervision begins at 7:50 a.m., students should not be arriving on school property before supervisors are on duty. During inclement weather, a double bell will ring and the students will be admitted early or remain inside at recess and during the lunch hour. However, parents must ensure that their child is properly dressed for current or forecasted weather conditions. When outside, students must play in their designated area and remain visible to the supervisor in the schoolyard. Students must gain permission from a supervisor before entering the school for any reason during recess. Students must not leave school grounds without the written permission of a parent/guardian.

Bikes, Skateboards, Scooters, etc. Students may ride bicycles, skateboards and scooters to school. Once on school property, they must walk their bikes to the racks and carry their scooters and skateboards until the bell rings. Bicycles must be securely locked in the bicycle rack when not in use. According to the Traffic Act, all students MUST wear a helmet. It is a parents responsibility to ensure the use of protective head gear (approved helmet). As with other valuable personal possessions, the school does not assume responsibility for damage or theft. Roller blades and roller shoes are not permitted on school property. Dogs The presence of dogs on the school grounds represents a safety issue. We realize that for the most part these pets are playful and harmless. However, the reality is that their mere presence strikes fear in many children. Please help us to maintain a safe school environment, and refrain from bringing your dog to school. Pets As a general rule, pets are not allowed in the school building. This practice is being implemented for safety reasons as a number of students have allergies to various animals and because even the tamest pet may react unexpectedly when surrounded by curious children or when inadvertently startled. Pets also disrupt regular routines. Arrangements can be made for class visits. Thank you for your understanding. Kiss & Ride Program

The primary purpose of Kiss-and-Ride is to ensure the safety of our students. It also provides an efficient and quick system for our students to arrive at and to leave school. At pick-up times, parents may need to drive through the semicircle more than once before the child(ren) is (are) ready for pick-up. This method reduces some of the parking hazards and congestion. We believe in safety over convenience. Parents are also asked to use caution and low speed when entering the traffic flow route, remain in their car when dropping off students and turn right when exiting school property. Please check the school website to view the colour-coded traffic flow chart.

KISS and RIDE

School Lock Down & Fire Drills The safety of staff and students is of paramount importance. In the event of a police emergency in the community or an intruder in the school, staff will follow the procedures for modified or full lockdown. These procedures will be rehearsed periodically through whole-school drills. All schools are required by law to have 6 fire drills throughout the school year (3 in the fall, 3 in the spring). The drills are for the protection of the children; therefore, every drill must be seen as a real emergency situation. Emergency Evacuation Procedure The immediate evacuation of the school building would mean that there is a need for students to leave the school before regular dismissal time. A case of fire, broken water pipes or danger of an explosion would necessitate this action. Our evacuation centre has been established as Anderson C.V.I. if it is determined that our school yard is unsafe for students.

Indoor & Outdoor Shoes Children are asked to remove their outdoor shoes/boots before entering their classrooms. Students should have a pair of indoor shoes which can also be worn for physical education, providing they are non-marking. Use of School Phone Occasionally it may be necessary for a student to make use of the school phone. Permission must be obtained from a staff member and a valid reason must be given. A request to use the phone to make arrangements for visiting friends after school or at lunch time is not a valid reason. Homework Policy Homework is a planned and purposeful part of the total program and is linked to the Ontario Curriculum learning expectations. Homework encourages the development of self-discipline, good work habits and positive attitudes toward independent study and lifelong learning. The following chart is useful only as a general guide. Physical Education To get the most benefit from these classes, students need to be dressed appropriately. All students are expected to wear non-marking running shoes, and we encourage students in grades 5 to 8 to change clothes for gym class. Younger students should always be dressed comfortably for physical education classes and wear a loose, comfortable top and gym shorts or track pants. Co-curricular Activities Students may participate in school clubs, sports, etc. during extra curricular time. When students are representing Julie Payette P.S., we expect them to follow all of our rules, regardless of whether they are on school property or in the community. It is a privilege to represent Julie Payette P.S. Students can have this privilege revoked if behaviour and/or failure to keep up with academics become a problem. School Bus Rules and Expectations Riding the bus is a privilege that may be withdrawn if a student's conduct is a threat to the safe operation of the bus or to an individual's safety. All previously noted school rules also apply when riding on the bus. If a student's bus privilege is suspended, parents are responsible for the transportation of their child. In order to ensure the safety of all our bussed students, here are the additional bus rules: 1. Students must stay in their designated seat at all times. 2. Quiet talking only - no loud or boisterous noises that may distract the driver. 3. Never put hands, arms, head, or legs or any article out the window. 4. Do not throw anything in the bus or out the windows. 5. No food or beverages may be consumed on the bus. 6. Remain seated at all times until the bus has come to a complete stop. A students name must appear on the bus drivers list before they are allowed to ride that particular bus. For this reason, students may not use a school bus to attend personal after school events such as visiting a friend. Parents must make other transportation arrangements. Expectations for School Trips Prior to a trip, student behaviour must demonstrate that they will not present a risk to themself or others (follow directions, listening to instructions with minimal supervision). A student may not be allowed to accompany his/her class on a school trip due to behaviour. Students are reminded that they are representing the school and that all school rules and expectations also apply. Students are reminded to be punctual thus showing respect for the time of others. All bus rules apply on any class trips that require a bus. Students are expected to let their supervisor(s) know of any inappropriate behaviour.

Emergencies & Inclement Weather From time to time the school is faced with emergency situations. Should such a situation arise, the procedure for closing the school and/or early dismissal will be as follows: Schools closing due to severe weather conditions will be announced by the Durham District School Board through: CKDO Oshawa 1350 MAGIC FM 94.9 CHUM FM 104.5 CKISS FM 92.5 CDC FM 99.1 CHFI FM 98.1 KX 96 FM 95.9

Emergencies & Inclement Weather (contd) On stormy days, if it is necessary to dismiss students early from school, students will be dismissed only when it is established that a parent or a designated emergency contact is at home to receive the student. If no contact can be made, the student will be kept at school under supervision by staff until picked up by a parent or guardian. Use of Internet Internet access is provided to students for educational purposes. Students and parents are expected to read and sign the Acceptable and Safe Use Policy before students will be allowed to access the computer. Inappropriate use of the computer, including the internet, will result in a suspension of privileges. Computers: Acceptable & Safe Use of Electronic Resources Guidelines We at Julie Payette P.S. are pleased to provide students with access to a variety of computing and information technology facilities and resources. These facilities and resources are provided for educational purposes, not for public access. Students may use the computing and technology facilities as instructed by their teachers. Students my use the Internet when a teacher is present. Students will never use their computing technology facilities for illegal or money-making purposes. Students will not download and sell materials which are owned by someone else. Students will follow the school rules when using and downloading any files and software. Students will inform their teacher immediately if they find materials and sites they should not see. Students will be polite and will only use language that is acceptable in school. Students will not use the computing and technology facilities in ways that will harm the system or another persons work. Students will not go into another persons private mail or files.
