What makes this training different from other Doula Trainings? Course has been developed by and is instructed by a midwife with experiencing attending births in hospitals, birth centers and out-of-hospital settings. Online classes offer a solution for those seeking to participate in training but limited by geography. There is no time-limit. Takes the classes live or watch the recordings in our own time. This allows for the freedom of other family and life responsibilities. Teaching style addresses all styles of adult learning. Auditory, visual and tactile learners will find their needs met.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions: No, I am not a DONA trainer. I am not sure if the completion of this course will count toward recertification with another agency. I developed this course to meet needs that, in my experience, were unmet. You may use this document or copies of handouts to seek recertification from another doula training agency. Yes, the classes can be viewed from the WizIQ website. They can also be downloaded (PCs only! But they tell me that theyre working very hard on a Mac compatible program!) and saved for later. The course costs $300. Yes, I can offer a discount. If you pay the full certification fee upfront I offer a 10% discount. You can pay for classes through the WizIQ website or pay directly to my Paypal or WePay account. I am also happy to accept a check mailed to my address. There is quite a bit of support for students. I make myself available before and after each class, by email and through phone consultations. There is also a very active Facebook group for all students. All students that participate in the Birth Doula Training receive discounts on all future Sudharma Birth Serivces trainings. Currently I have offered Placenta Remedies training and Nutrient-Dense Nutrition during Pregnancy. There are others being developed.

(1) Mother Earth: Why Intervention-Free Childbirth is the Safest Choice Evidence clearly links and increase in medical interventions with an increase in complications. This class is intended to provide participants with evidence-based resources on the various choices pregnant families are faced with. At the end of the session participants will be able to: List the various birth settings, Describe the difference between an Obstetrician, Certified Nurse Midwife, Certified Professional Midwife and a direct entry midwife List common hospital protocols and obstetrical interventions (2) A Seed Planted: Prenatal Care A family typically initiates contact with a doula during their prenatal period. It is important for you to understand what changes occur during this time and the options that families are given. At the end of this class participants will be able to: Describe physical, emotional and spiritual changes that occur during the prenatal period. List 3 tests or screenings that are performed during routine prenatal appointments. Define informed consent Identify signs and symptoms of Pregnancy Induced Hypertension and Gestational Diabetes. This goal of this class is to equip participants with the knowledge necessary to understand the natural rhythms of the first stage of labor, in which a mothers body unfolds in preparation to meet her newborn. (5) The Gardener and Her Tools: Interventions and Variations of Normal This is the class where we discuss things that could happenbut arent likely to. Goals of this class are to describe the variation of normal in pregnancy, and all stage of labor as well as common interventions during these stages of labor. Students will be able to: Define fetal lie Describe and demonstrate various fetal positions Be familiar with and able to list variations of normal in first and second stage of labor Define: a cord prolapse, placenta previa, placental abruption, postpartum hemorrhage and uterine rupture List the risks associated with chemical, natural or herbal augmentation of labor (6) Using What We Were Born With: Cesarean Section and VBAC/HVAC Many of todays births are surgical deliveries. It is important that birth professionals understand what this involves, the risks and benefits, true and stated reasons for surgical delivery and the impact on future pregnancies. Participants will be able to: Describe a cesarean delivery Understand what medically indicated reasons for a surgical delivery are. List resources available to mothers Discuss special considerations for mothers who have had a cesarean section, who have had a VBAC or for those who were unable to VBAC (7) The Fourth Trimester: Postpartum Needs Although most of a birth doula responsibility is related to the labor and birth process, many women lack the necessary support and education to gracefully transition during the fourth trimester. Often, a mother that you have supported will rely on your relationship and knowledge. We will discuss Immediate Postpartum Physiology Immediate Newborn Physiology Postpartum Mood Disorders : Postpartum depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, Postpartum Psychosis and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Participants will be able to: Accurately describe the immediate physiological changes that occur in a mother. Accurately describe the immediate physiological changes that occur during a neonates transition from intrauterine to extrauterine life. List Postpartum Mood disorders and their symptoms. (8) Nourishing our Future: Breastfeeding Basics This is a basic class that covers the foundation of information necessary to provide support to recently postpartum mothers. Participants will be able to: List 5 Benefits of exclusive breastfeeding Describe 5 commonly used breastfeeding positions List 3 common obstacles that mothers face and ways to address these concerns. (9) How to Talk so Clients Listen, How to Listen so Clients Talk: Communication for Birth Workers Second to our hearts, our ears are the most important part of our work as birth professionals.This class covers the basics of communication and discusses active and reflective listening techniques. (10) Its Your Business At this point weve covered all of the foundation information and now well look at how to build and run a small business.
