That means next to nothing if it doesnt translate into actual support for a cause: the youths cause. Following the success of the Kabataan News Network programme, the Probe Media Foundation, Inc. (PMFI), now dares college students all over the country to convert their social networks into something with a social net worth. In partnership with the Philippine Center for Population and Development (PCPD) and through Mulat Pinoy, PMFI will be facilitating a workshop for college students in September 2011 focusing on issues related to population and development (popdev). Social NetWorth: The Filipino Youth on Social Media and PopDev aims to discuss and highlight a variety of issues related to popdev, including population momentum. The workshop will also teach strategies and schemes that will help the participants maximize their social networks and the use of social media in discussing popdev. As part of the programmes culminating activity, the students will conceptualize, plan, and execute a social media-based project in their communities, specifically a blog or a website, geared towards increasing awareness among their peers and engaging them in a proactive stance on popdev.

Social Media in the Philippines The Filipino online presence has had a steady increase since its first connection in 1994. Currently, almost 30% of the Filipino population has Internet access, 93.9% of which has an active Facebook account. On Twitter, the Philippines has the 8th highest number of users. Filipino topics continue to trend not only in the Philippines but also worldwide. There has been a 50% increase in the number of Internet users here in the Philippines from 2009 to 2010, and statistics show no signs of slowing down. If anything, the online Filipino has a wider reach and a broader online network than most, and continues to enjoy an online following that may be mobilized in hopes of fulfilling a cause.
