Dooley English 8 per 3 10 May 2011 1984 essay Compare/contrast evidence of exaggeration used in propaganda in countries around the world and in 1984. George Orwells novel, 1984, written in 1948, introduces the powers of propaganda in a dystopian country, Oceania. The Party, a group that oversees Oceania, uses propaganda as a powerful weapon to brainwash the citizens similar to the use of propaganda by Joseph Goebbels, Minister for Propaganda appointed by Hitler in 1933. In 1984, Winston, a rebel in Oceania, discovers the Partys intention to revise historical documents and articles and Big Brother, the so called leader of the Party. The manipulated documents and articles and Big Brother are propagandas used to influence people. Revising historical documents allows the Party to control peoples ability to know and understand what actually happened. The purpose of the posters and flyers is to make people believe how great Big Brother and his Party is, boosting peoples morale and views. Many modern governments continue to tell their people only what they want their people to know, and thus the innocent denizens fail to realize that they are taken in and manipulated. The Partys slogan, WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANACE IS STRENGTH(4), according to the Institute for Propaganda Analysis (IPA) is a form of Bandwagon propaganda, Pump up the value of joining the party. (Propaganda History). The real meaning of the words is hidden. In Orwells essay Politics and the English language, he maintained that fighting propaganda meant fighting metal laziness. (Rise of Modern Propaganda). Prior to World War II, Goebbels, with complete control over radio, press, and cinema, became a mini-Hitler that oversees the German Party to alter morale at home. He utilizes propaganda that label events and people with distinctive phrases or slogans and they must be capable of being easily learned. Similar to another propaganda in 1984, BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU(2), the propaganda tells people to watch their actions; furthermore, it attempts to control the actions of the people and implies tremendous threat. George Orwells 1984 clearly indicates how propaganda is used in the past and present. Everything published is propaganda. It is a weapon against the enemy and one method to uplift morale at home. Although a few see through the propaganda, most see nothing of just how much they are influenced.
