Greenwich Pumping Station

We need a work site to connect the local combined sewer overflow (CSO), known as Greenwich Pumping Station, to the main tunnel of the proposed Thames Tunnel project. During our first phase of public consultation (Sep 2010-Jan 2011) we proposed to tunnel from Kings Stairs Gardens to Greenwich Pumping Station, in order to intercept the flow of untreated sewage that currently overflows to the River Thames. As we are now looking at a new tunnelling strategy and alternative sites we are considering tunnelling from Greenwich Pumping Station up to our potential new site at Chambers Wharf.

Greenwich Pumping Station

Why do we need a site in this location? When it rains, the Greenwich Pumping Station CSO discharges untreated sewage directly into the River Thames. This CSO is currently the worst offender out of all the CSOs on the tidal River Thames. It discharges about eight million tonnes of untreated sewage into the River Thames in a typical year.

At Abbey Mills Pumping Station we may not be able to do this effectively and so we are now considering driving the main tunnel from the potential new site at Chambers Wharf to Abbey Mills Pumping Station. Knock-on effects of the new tunnelling strategy

As we are now considering tunnelling from Chambers Wharf (if the site is selected) to Abbey Mills Pumping Once the Crossness sewage treatment works upgrade is complete, Greenwich Pumping Station will Station, we can no longer drive the connection still discharge about four million tonnes of untreated tunnel that we need to intercept the Greenwich Pumping Station overflow from this location. sewage each year. We need a work site in the vicinity of the CSO to connect it into the proposed Thames Tunnel so that instead of discharging to the river, the flows will be captured by the tunnel and taken away for treatment. Potential new tunnelling strategy Instead, we may need to drive the five-metre long connection tunnel from our proposed site at Greenwich Pumping Station up to the proposed site at Chambers Wharf. Next steps

There are still more studies that we have to carry out to make sure the site is appropriate. We also need to As we have taken forward the proposals for the carry out formal consultation on our proposals at our construction of the Thames Tunnel, we have found that it may be more difficult that we had anticipated phase two consultation later this year, where more to use Abbey Mills Pumping Station as a site to drive details will be available on our proposed use of the site. the construction of the main tunnel. This is because we want to use river transport where practical and economical to take excavated material away from our work sites.
