1. (a) Draw and explain the operation of single- phase semi converter feeding a separately excited dc motor with the help of typical voltage and current waveforms. Assume operation to be continuous current mode. (b) A 200 V, 875 rpm, 150 A separately excited dc motor has an armature resistance of 0.06 ohm. It is fed from a single phase fully controlled rectier with an ac source voltage of 220 V, 50 Hz. Assuming continuous conduction, calculate. i. Firing angle for rated motor torque and 750 rpm. ii. Firing angle for rated motor torque and -500 rpm. iii. Motor speed for a ring angle of 1600 and rated torque. 2. (a) Explain the operation of separately excited dc motor fed by a three- phase half converter. (b) A 220 V, 750 rpm, 200 A separately excited motor has armature and eld resistances of 0.05 ohm and 20 ohm respectively. Load torque is given by the expression TL = 5000.2N N-m, where N is the speed in rpm. Speeds below rated values are obtained by armature voltage control with full eld and the speeds above rated are obtained by eld control at reated armature voltage. Armature is fed from a three- phase fully controlled rectier with ac source voltage (line) of 170 V, 50 Hz and the eld is fed from a half controlled single- phase rectier with a single- phase source voltage of 250 V, 50 Hz. drive operates under continuous conduction. Calculate ring angles for speeds i. 600 rpm ii. 1200 rpm 3. (a) Explain various braking methods employed for a separately excited DC motor. (b) Explain the operation of a dual converter fed dc motor with neat waveforms. 4. (a) Derive an expression for speed of a dc series motor fed from a chopper circuit. (b) A 230 V, 1200 rpm, 15A separately excited dc motor has an armature resistance of 1.2 ohm. Motor is operated under dynamic braking with chopper control. Braking resistance has a value of 20 ohm. i. Calculated duty ratio of chopper for motor speed of 1000 rpm and braking torque equal to 1.5 times rated motor torque. ii. What will be the motor speed for duty ratio of 0.5 and motor torque equal to its rated torque? 5. (a) State the various methods of speed control of induction motor and explain about the stator voltage control of an induction motor with speed- torque characteristics. (b) A 2.8 kW, 400 V, 50 Hz, 4-pole 1370 rpm, delta connected squirrel cage induction motor has following parameters referred to the stator: RS = 2 ohm Rr = 5 ohm, XS = Xr = 5 ohm, Xm = 80 ohm . Motor speed is controlled by stator voltage control. When driving a fan load it runs at rated speed at rated voltage. Calculated motor terminal voltage, current and torque at 1200 rpm. 6. (a) Compare the performance of voltage source inverter fed induction motor drive for constant v/f control with and without stator impedance assumed. (b) A 420 V, 6-pole, 50 Hz, 3- phase star connected induction motor has r1 = 0, x1 = x2 = 1.2 ohm, r2 = 0.5 ohm and xm = 50 ohm, all parameters referred to stator. This induction motor is fed from constant current source of 30 A, calculate i. The slip at maximum torque ii. The starting and maximum torques. 7. (a) Explain the static Scherbius drive with neat sketch. Also draw the phasor diagram. (b) A 3- phase, 400 V, 50 Hz, 10 kW, 960 rpm, 6-pole star connected slipring induction motor has the following constants referred to the stator.RS = 0.4 ohm, Rr = 0.6 ohm, Xs = Xr = 1.4 ohm . The motor drives a fan load at 960 rpm. The stator to rotor turns ratio is 2. i. What resistance must be connected in each phase of the rotor circuit to reduce the speed to 800 rpm? ii. When the motor is controlled by static rotor resistance control, calculate the value of external resistance so that motor runs at 800 rpm for a duty ratio of 0.5. 8. (a) What are the dierent control methods for synchronous motor? Explain about the true synchronous mode of operation of synchronous motor. (b) Explain about the load commutated current source inverter fed synchronous motor.

1. (a) Draw and explain the operation of 1-phase semi converter feeding a dc series motor. Explain with typical voltage and current waveforms, the operation in both continuous and discontinuous current modes. (b) A 5 kW, 220 V, 1500 rpm separately excited dc motor is controlled using a single phase full converter. If the ac supply voltage is 230 V, 50 Hz and the motor rated current is 20 A at near full load, nd for = 600 , the speed of the motor and its torque. Assume the armature resistance to be 0.5 ohm and machine constant to be 0.2 V/rpm. Also assume continuous armature current. 2. (a) Explain the operation of dc series motor fed by a three- phase half controlled converter. (b) A 220 V, 600 rpm, 500 A separately excited dc motor has armature and eld resistances of 0.02 ohm and 10 ohm respectively. Armature is fed from a three- phase fully controlled rectier and eld from half controlled single- phase rectier. A three- phase three wire ac source with a line voltage of 440 V is available. Armature rectier is fed from a three- phase transformer with Y connection and eld rectier from a single- phase transformer. i. Output voltages of transformer must be such that for zero ring angles, rated voltages are maintained across the motor armature and eld. Calculate transformer turns ratio. ii. With the transformer turns ratio as in. (i), calculate ring angles of the armature rectier for A. Rated torque and eld at 400 rpm B. Rated torque and eld at - 400 rpm. Assume continuous conduction. 3. (a) How a dc motor can be operated in four quadrants of speed- torque characteristics? Explain. (b) A 230 V, 870 rpm, 100 A separately excited dc motor has an armature resistance of 0.02 ohm. It is coupled to an overhauling load with a torque of 400 N-m. determine the speed at which motor can hold the load by regenerating braking. 4. (a) Explain the operation of a four- quadrant transistorized chopper drive for control of dc separately excited dc motor. (b) A dc chopper is used to control a 230 V separately excited dc motor takes 50A at rated speed of 800 rpm. It has the armature resistance of 0.4 ohm. The chopper has an input voltage of 230 V and frequency of 500 Hz. assuming continuous conduction, calculate the speed and torque for duty ratios 0.4 and 0.6. 5. (a) Explain about the stator voltage control of induction motor with speed- torque characteristic. Why is it suitable for fan and pumps applications? (b) A 400 V, 50 Hz, three-phase, 6-pole 945 rpm delta connected squirrel-cage induction motor has following parameters referred to the stator:RS = 2 ohm, Rr = 2 ohm, Xs = 3 ohm, Xr = 4 ohm . When driving a fan load it runs at rated speed at rated voltage. The motor speed is controlled by stator voltage control. Calculated motor terminal voltage, current and torque at 800 rpm. 6. (a) Derive the expression for torque, when the induction motor is controlled by current source inverters at xed frequency. (b) A 11.2 kW, 1450 rpm, 460 V, 50 Hz, 4-pole star connected induction motor has the following per phase equivalent circuit parameters RS = 0.66 ohm, Rr = 0.38 ohm, Xs = 1.14 ohm, Xr = 1.71 ohm . The speed of the motor is controlled by varying the frequency by keeping v/f constant. Determine the torque developed by the motor at a slip frequency of 3 Hz and stator frequency of 27 Hz. 7. (a) Explain the static rotor resistance control method for the speed control of induction motor with neat block diagram. Also derive the necessary expressions. (b) Explain about the static Kramer drive with neat sketch. Why it has a low range of speed control? 8. (a) Draw and explain the block diagram of self controlled synchronous motor with neat waveforms. (b) Briey explain why the above motor is free from hunting oscillations.

1. (a) Draw and explain the operation of 1-phase full converter feeding a separately excited dc motor. Explain with typical voltage and current waveforms, the operation in continuous current mode. Also derive the expression for average load voltage. (b) A 230 V, 650 rpm, 100 A separately excited dc motor has an armature resistance and inductance of 0.08 ohm and 8 mH respectively. Motor is controlled by a single- phase half controlled rectier with source voltage of 230 V, 50 Hz. Identify the modes and calculate speed for i. = 600 and torque = 1000 N-m ii. = 1200 and torque = 1000 N-m 2. (a) Explain the operation of separately excited dc motor fed by a three-phase full converter. (b) A 100 ph, 440 V, 900 rpm separately excited dc motor is operating at 450 rpm developing 80% of the rated torque. The motor being controlled by a three-phase three pulse thyristor converter, calculate the triggering angle of the converter if the back emf at rated speed is 400 V. Assume ac input voltage to be 415 V. 3. (a) State and explain the important features of various braking methods of dc motors. (b) Explain the closed loop operation of dc motor with a neat block diagram. 4. (a) Derive the expressions for instantaneous armature current, output voltage and speed of a dc series motor fed from a step-down chopper. Also draw its speed-torque characteristic for various values of duty cycle. (b) Assuming a continuous armature current, derive the expressions for Imax , Imin for an ideal Chopper. 5. (a) Explain about the stator voltage control in induction motor. Why it is an inecient method of induction motor speed control? (b) A 2.8 kW, 400 V, 50 Hz, 4-pole 1370 rpm, Y- connected squirrel -cage induction motor has following parameters referred to the stator:RS = 1.9ohm, Rr = 4.757 ohm, Xs = Xr = 3ohm . Load characteristics are matched with motor such that the motor runs at 1370 rpm with full voltage across its terminals. The motor is controlled by terminal voltage control and load torque is proportional to the speed. Calculate motor terminal voltage and current at half the rated speed. Can the motor be allowed to run continuously at this speed? 6. (a) Discuss the operation of an induction motor fed from a variable frequency supply for the following two dierent modes. i. Below the rated frequency ii. Above the rated frequency Also plot the torque-slip characteristics for above two modes of operation. (b) Compare the operation of induction motor with VSI and CSI. 7. (a) Explain about the static rotor resistance control with neat sketch. Why the rotor resistance control is preferred in low power crane drives? (b) A 3-phase, 400 V, 50 Hz, 4-pole rpm, star connected wound rotor induction motor has the following parameters referred to the stator.RS = 2ohm, Rr = 3 ohm, Xs = Xr = 3.5ohm . The stator to rotor turns ratio is 2. The motor speed is controlled by Static Scherbius drive. The inverter is directly connected to the source. Determine i. The speed range of the drive when max = 1650 ii. Torque for a speed of 1050 rpm and ring angle of 950 8. (a) A 6 MW, 3-phase 11 kV, star connected, 6-pole, 50 Hz, 0.9 (leading ) power factor synchronous motor has Xs = 9 ohm and Rs = 0 . Rated eld current is 50 A. Machine is controlled by variable frequency control at constant v/f ratio up to the base speed and at constant voltage above base speed. Determine i. Torque and eld current for the rated armature current, 750 rpm and 0.8 leading power factor. ii. Armature current and power factor for half the rated motor torque, 1500 rpm and rated eld current. (b) Explain about the closed loop operation of synchronous motor drive with a neat sketch.

1. (a) Draw and explain the operation of single-phase full converter feeding a dc series motor with typical voltage and current waveforms. Derive expressions for current, speed and torque when the motor is operated in discontinuous current mode. (b) The separately excited dc motor is fed from a 230 V, 50 Hz supply via a single phase half controlled bridge rectier. Armature parameters are inductance 0.06 H, resistance 0.3 ohm, the motor voltage constant is ka = 0.9 V/Arad/sec and eld resistance is Rf = 104 ohm. The eld current is also controlled by a semi converter and is set to maximum possible value. The load torque is 50 N-m at 800 rpm. The inductances of armature and eld circuits are sucient enough to make armature and eld currents continuous and ripple free. Compute, i. Field current ii. Firing angle of converter in the armature circuit iii. Input power factor. 2. (a) Explain the operation of dc series motor fed by a three-phase full converter for both continuous and discontinuous conduction modes. (b) The speed of a 25 hp, 380 V, 1800 rpm separately excited dc motor is controlled by a 3-phase full converter and eld circuit is set to maximum possible value. The ac input is a 3-phase Y-connected 210V, 50Hz supply. The armature and led parameters are Ra = 0.15, Rf = 250 and Ka = 1.2 V/A. rad/sec. Assume that armature and led currents are continuous and ripple free. Determine i. The ring angle of armature converter if motor supplies rated power at rated speed ii. Speed regulation. 3. (a) Describe the relative merits and demerits of four quadrant dc drives employing non- circulating and circulating current dual converters. (b) A fully controlled rectier fed separately excited dc motor is required to operate in motoring and braking operation in the forward direction. Only one fully controlled rectier is available. What switching arrangement will be required? Explain. 4. (a) Explain the closed loop operation of chopper fed dc motor with a neat block diagram. (b) A dc chopper controls a dc series motor. The supply voltage being 220 V dc, the eld and armature resistances are 0.2 and 0.3 ohm respectively. If the back emf of the motor be 160 V, average armature current of 50 A, nd the smooth and continuous armature current, the input power from source, the input resistance of the chopper drive and motor speed. Assume, duty cycle of the chopper to be 0.5 and motor voltage constant to be 0.02. 5. (a) Discuss the stator voltage control scheme of induction motor. Also draw and explain the speed- torque characteristics. (b) A 440 V, 50 Hz, three- phase, 6-pole, 945 rpm delta connected squirrel- cage induction motor has following parameters referred to the stator:RS = 2 ohm, Rr = 2 ohm, Xs = 3 ohm, Xr = 4ohm. The load torque is varying linearly with speed. The motor speed is controlled by stator voltage control. Calculate motor terminal voltage, current and torque at 800 rpm. 6. (a) Explain about the closed loop operation of VSI fed induction motor drive with a neat sketch. (b) Derive the expression for torque, when the induction motor is controlled by current source inverters at xed frequency. 7. (a) Explain about the static Kramer drive with a neat block diagram. Also, explain how to improve the power factor of static Kramer drive. (b) A 3-phase, 460V, 60Hz, 1164 rpm, star connected slip ring induction motor has the following parameters:R1 = 0.4, R2 = 0.6, X1 = X2 = 1.8, Xm = 30 , rotor to stator turns ratio is 0.4. The motor speed is controlled by static rotor resistance control. Filter resistance is 0.02, and external resistance is chosen such that at = 0 the breakdown torque is obtained at standstill. i. Calculate the value of the external resistance ii. Calculate for a speed of 960 rpm at 1.5 times the rated torque. 8. (a) Explain about the constant margin angle control of synchronous motor. (b) What is the basic dierence between true synchronous mode and self control mode for variable frequency control of synchronous motor?
