THE PRESIDENTS SPEECH

Well, it's been a long time since the Annual General Meeting back in October last year and this is the first newsletter proper since!! It's a little late but I'd like to thank Dean Driver for his efforts as club President and I look forward to carrying the baton he handed on over the remainder of the club year. I'd also like to thank Jim Young and Chris Timms for their continued excellent work as club Secretary and Treasurer respectively. It's been a tricky few months gathering information with regard to what members would like to get from their club and has seen a lean toward more relaxed, localised Sunday cruises to places like Lawrence and Middlemarch. With fuel prices spiralling rapidly ever upward it would seem the perfect way forward If you can think of any places you'd like to cruise to or an event you think the club might enjoy please let Jim know. We have a few events pencilled in at this time including the Navigational challenge in May and the Autospectacular in October as well as the second club fund raiser in the form of a quiz in June. Keep up the good work everybody and I look forward to reporting the progress we've made on the 2012 Nationals in the next Newsletter, we've made huge headway on accommodation, show 'n' shine, Saturday cruise and Sunday evening meal thanks to several hardworking club members. Finally, I'd like to wish you all a very happy Easter. Happy dubbin' Elaine

CHRISTMAS BARBEQUE 2010

A rather select gathering took place at Brighton Domain, and despite small numbers a good time was had in sunny conditions. A few games of petanque and some beach races provided plenty of entertainment, and everyone had a good time (especially the dogs.)

DUNEDIN 1/8 DRAG SPRINTS DECEMBER 2010

Four Otago VW club members joined thirty four other drivers and fourteen motorcycle pilots for the second running of the Southern Festival of Speed Dunedin 1/8 Drag Sprints, held on a closed section of Princes Street starting from near the BP station. Despite only two entries of Volkswagens it was close-fought racing between the air cooled Beetles of Chris Timms and Jim Young, each not only wanting to beat the other, but also not wanting to show themselves up against some pretty serious machinery, and in front of a capacity crowd. Stalling on the start line was not an option for these two! At the end of round three (round four was cancelled due to rain and both Chris and Jim posted their fastest times of the day in round 4!) the standings looked like this : Round 1 10.591 10.447

BAY WINDOW CREW CAB SPOTTED IN DUNEDIN!
Spotted by club member Clare Eagle-Eye Fitzpatrick, this rare-as-hens-teeth early bay double cab is wearing a particularly eye-watering 80s paint job, chrome Porsche Fuchs alloys and chromed bumpers. Does anyone know anything about this mystery machine??

GABRIELS GULLEY GOLDRUSH 150TH
A good turnout of Club cars met at the Commercial Tavern at 9.30 am and made the surprisingly quick run to Lawrence to join in the 150th anniversary celebrations. Picking up two more cars en route the convoy arrived just one hour later to enjoy a relaxing day under a hot sunny sky. The three Beetles in our group were invited to join the line up of classic cars which had assembled in the grounds of the vintage machinery museum, where we found a very original and low mileage 1300 hiding in a corner of one of the sheds. A stop off at the Waihola Tavern for some liquid refreshment rounded off an excellent trip.

VWs NEW 464bhp GOLF RACE CAR
Volkswagen will enter this years Nurburgring 24 Hours race with AN all-new racing version of the Golf. Dubbed Golf24, the all-wheel drive racer is equipped with a turbocharged 2.5-litre fivecylinder engine that develops 434bhp and 398lb ft mated to a sequential six-speed paddleshift gearbox. Initial testing of the Golf24 has already taken place at Portimo in Portugal and Vallelunga in Italy ahead of its appearance in the famous race at the Nurburgring in late June. Volkswagen has entered its Scirocco GT24 in the past three Nurburgring 24 Hour races, achieving class victories on each occasion. The competitiveness of the event has increased enormously meaning a new technical concept was required, said VW in a statement. As well as competing in the 24 Hour race at the Nurburgring, VW will also enter three other endurance events at the circuit.
