Toyota exports record $850M

Toyota Group notched a record of nearly $850 million in exports of parts and components in 2010, up 23 percent from $700 million in 2009, due to strong volume demand from its markets abroad. Rommel Gutierrez, vice-president of Toyota Motor Philippines Corp., said Toyota Auto Parts Inc (TAP) led the export surge with a 43 percent increase in exports worth nearly $200 million, compared with $140 million shipped in 2009. TAP is the global production and supply hub for manual transmissions within the Innovative International Multipurpose Vehicle (IMV) project. It is one of Toyotas some 20 or so vehicle parts makers performing strategic roles in making and exporting automotive products to 11 production bases worldwide. Through this parts complementation, local parts manufacturers are able to penetrate the export market, which they would otherwise find difficult to enter individually. The $850 million exported by Toyota Group in 2010 is equivalent to 80,000 units of completely built-up (CBU) units as earlier estimated by TMP president Michinobu Sugata. Located at the Toyota Special Economic Zone (TSEZ) in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, TAP makes transmissions and constant velocity joints mainly for the export market, including Thailand and Indonesia. Last year, it exported 169,073 units of transmissions globally and 156,530 units regionally for a total export volume of 325,603 units. Set up in 1990, TAP is owned 95 percent by Toyota Motor Co. and 5 percent by TMP. TAP plays a crucial role in the IMV project as the global manual transmission and supply hub. The project includes manufacture of three pickup truck models as well as minivans and sport-utility vehicles in nine countries.
