Marikina City Bikeways Program

Vision
Bicycle-Friendly City

Mission
To design and operate 66 kms. of bicycle trails and
designated lanes that are safe, well-paved and lighted with
appropriate signage's, informative directions and parking facilities
connecting strategic areas in the city to major transport terminals
and urban facilities.
To increase community acceptance and/or major preference
of using bicycles and non-motorized transport (NMT) as alternative
transport mode for intra-city trips.
To demonstrate and publicize the benefits and viability of
bicycles as an alternative transport mode to encourage replication of
this pilot program in other parts of Metro Manila, elsewhere in the
Philippines and in other countries.

PROMOTING THE BIKE-TO-WORK

OBJECTIVE OF THE MARIKINA BICYCLE LOAN PROGRAM:


•To promote the use of bicycle within the City as a mode of transportation
•To provide an interest-free loan scheme to employees for the purchase of bicycles
•To increase the fitness level of the employees through the “Bike to Work” campaign

Bike to School Campaign
1. Elementary – Saturday Bike Clinic/City Tour
on bicycle ( To date more than 3,900 students participated
since 2003 (126 sessions)
2. High School – Bicycle Lending Scheme ( 150
students participated in 2 high schools)
3. College – Integration of Bicycle Promotion
Program in their National Service Training
Program ( 145 students from PLMAR participated to date)

The students’

number of enrollees
per training session.

bicycle available.

FACT:
• Many trips in Marikina are very short
and all internal trips are cycling
distance

The Bike to School program promote


cycling as a mode of transportation, a good
form of exercise and an effective approach
in combating pollution & overcrowded
PUJs. Cycling is the youth’s alternative in
stretching the limited allowance given by
the already overburdened parents of today.

The Marikina Bikeways Office
•Plan and build the bicycle lanes, parking
facilities and necessary signages, lighting and
landscaping to attract more people to bike
•Coordinate the maintenance and patrolling of
bikeways and tap the community volunteer
workers such as the Bantay Bayan in assisting
the students on bike to cross the busy
intersections
•Educate the youth on Safe Cycling and
promote people’s awareness on the proper
usage of bicycle lane thru patrolling and bicycle
events ( Bike Tours, Bike Week, Carless Day)
•Helping the community in the maintenance of
their bicycle by conducting Bicycle Repair Clinics
and other bicycle-related community outreach
projects such as Sunday’s Kapihan sa Bikeways
•Promote Bicycle as Alternative mode of
transport by Promoting the Marikina Bicycle
Loan Program ( Bike-to-Work) and Bicycle
Lending Program ( Bike-to-School)
