Benjamin Low (1005069H) Project Pitching Assignment 1: MTV Song: Coldest Winter by Kanye West 3 minutes 54 seconds, released

24 December 2008. Background information: Kanye West has rise up to become an acclaimed artist since the release of his debut album in 2004. Prior to that, he had been a successful producer for major hip-hop artists, including Jay-Z. Kanyes immense commercial success (14 Grammies in 2011, all 5 albums achieving platinum status) is matched by his artistic style and broad music palette and inuences, which have garnered positive reactions from critics and fans alike. He has also been the subject of controversial statements and actions towards political gures and fellow members of the music industry. His music is mostly about himself and those around him, notably Hey Mama which was written for his mother, and other songs which spoke frankly of his attitudes and of those closest to him. The recent years have been bad for Kanye, with his mother passing away in 2007 and the end of his 18-month engagement with his ance in 2008. These changes in his life and outlook were reected in a very different sound unlike his usual when creating his fourth album 808 & Heartbreak. It is this album that the song Coldest Winter is taken from. As such, I have decided to base this music video on the memories of Kanyes life turbulent personal life. The mistakes that he made, and the losses he had because of those mistakes. Treatment: Mood: Winter, light snow, lonely blue and dark tones. Theme: Bad memories (from Kanyes experiences) He crashes his car in the middle of nowhere, and runs away from the scene. This represents the derailing of his sanity and the instinct to escape it all. As he runs, he unconsciously looks back through all the bad memories from his past. Scenes of the breakdown between his past lovers, the death of his mother, and the hardships of making it to the top of the business. These painful visitations build to a climax as he runs faster and faster to escape it all. But suddenly there is a blinding white globe of light. He stops running and looks at the light. It soothes him in a strange way. The video ends with Kanye looking into the light, the atmosphere a little warmer (very slow dolly-out, extreme WS.)

Summary: A music video featuring Kanye Wests single Coldest Winter. Which is based on ashbacks of his bad memories in his life, in lonely, dark and winter setting. Visual styling will be based on Kanyes own, which is distinctively creative and popular with his fans and audiences. It will cost approximately $70,000 to produce and 45 days to complete.
