RNG's Retail Tech Innovation Highlights Taobao, Chinas leading online retailer, has opened a home furnishing showroom in Beijing. The 250,000 square foot building is the companys first brick and mortar operation, although it will be used only as a showroom for the products of Taobaos merchants; all ordering will be done online. With an estimated $60 billion in gross merchandise sales in 2010, Taobao accounts for 3% of retail in China. With the explosive growth of e-commerce in the country (30-40% annually), it is possible that an online retailer will one day be the market leader. Google has unveiled their mobile payments solution, Google Wallet. The much anticipated product will store credit cards, coupons, loyalty cards and gift cards in the customers virtual wallet. With the tap of a smartphone, users will be able to pay with a chosen account, with any relevant coupons and loyalty programs taken into account. While very few phones have the needed NFC technology currently, it is estimated that 50% of smartphones will by 2014. The service will be launching in 120,000 stores in the US, including Macys, Walgreens, and Subway. In a soon to be crowded market, Google has delivered the first viable, large scale mobile payments solution.
Square also recently made headlines with their revamped mobile payments platform. With Square Register, their new iPad app, the company is providing merchants with a highly functional POS, not just a credit card reader. The app will provide businesses with analytical data on purchase history, demographics, etc. On the consumer-facing side, Square is launching Square Card Case. When a purchase is made, a stores card will be added to the customers Square app, providing them with location details, contact information, purchase history, receipts, and more. Most interestingly, customers will be able to start a tab with a particular store, and pay simply giving their name upon future visits. While Google Wallet will likely be transformational on a larger scale, Square has introduced a killer solution for small businesses. Gilt Groupe has launched Gilt Taste, an online marketplace for high end food and beverage sold at full price, unlike Gilts original closeout model. The company claims that many of the products and ingredients on the new site were previously only available to professional chefs. The move is a sign that the appetite for online grocery has changed, and Gilt Taste could prove popular with wealthy so-called foodies looking for discovery and experimentation. Walmart has bought a minority stake in Chinas leading online grocery, Yihaodian, meaning Number One Store. The move comes ahead of Walmarts launch of e-commerce in China and Japan. The move should help Walmart gain a deeper knowledge of online retailing in the developing market and of course also opens them up to purchasing Yihaodian outright. According to Paypal, mobile commerce takes more sales out of stores than e-commerce. This goes against the conventional wisdom of many, but is actually fairly intuitive. Many shoppers find items they want to purchase in-store, but when they find a cheaper price by doing a price comparison on their smartphone will purchase from Amazon or another online retailer. Additionally, ordering by phone and picking up in-store has proved very popular, further cannibalizing stores sales. Tesco is trialing an in-store navigation Android app at a store in London. The app will help shoppers locate products within the store and provide them with the shortest route to pick up

multiple items. Instead of working with GPS, which has indoor limitations, the navigation will be guided by Wi-Fi triangulation. There are, however, barriers to accurate navigation with this method as well, and due to the significant infrastructure changes needed, it is unknown whether or not the service will be rolled out.
