Listening Culture Notes 1. Hi is informal. We say hi to our friends. 2. Ana smiles and says, "Good morning." Dave nods and says, "Im doing fine, thanks." We often smile or nod with the greeting. 3. We often say good morning. We dont say good afternoon or good evening very often. Listening Challenge Culture Notes We often use informal language with our friends. WEB RESEARCH AND WRITING ASSIGNMENTS Web Research Assignment


Summary: Students research pen pal sites. Then they choose a pen pal and write a short description of that person. Procedure 1. Hand out copies of "Web Research Assignment: Pen Pal Sites," on the next page of this document. Give this to students before they do the online exercises and Communication Companion activities for Unit A.1. 2. Show students the model for writing their answers in Part C of the handout. 3. If you have additional websites related to pen pals to suggest, write them on the board. Have students copy this on the lines in Part B of the handout. 4. Have students complete the assignment for homework.

Writing Assignment
Summary: Students write a short note to a friend. Procedure 1. Hand out copies of "Writing Assignment: Write a Note," on the next page of this document. Give this to students before they do the online and Communication Companion activities for Unit A.1. 2. Explain to students that they will do this assignment after completing the Reading section of the online course. 3. Elicit from students what they might say in a note to a friend. Write some of these questions or statements on the board. 4. Tell students they will write a note to a friend. Show them the model for writing their note in Part B of the handout. 5. Have students complete the assignment for homework.

TEACHING UNIT A.1 IN CLASS Communication Companion Notes


Greeting People
Summary: Students get to know each other by practicing greetings. Language Point: Intonation in greetings Groups: Groups of 5 Materials Needed: A small piece of paper per student plus tape to stick nametags to clothes or forehead. Procedure 1. Have students look at the picture and identify the characters from the video. 2. Tell students to look at the dialog. (This dialog is based on the video script.) Do a choral reading. Have students repeat each line of the dialog after you. 3. Create groups of 5 so that each group has a Student A, B, C, D, and E. 4. Give students time to review the dialog by themselves. 5. Have students write their first name on a piece of paper and stick the name to their clothes or to their forehead (better for eye contact). 6. Tell students to practice the dialog. Students A and B begin. Remind them to use their own names, which must be clearly visible to their partner. 7. When Students A and B have finished their greeting, Student B now begins the greeting with Student C. They practice the dialog again. 8. Continue until Students E and A have completed the conversation. Extension 1 1. Have students take off their nametags. 2. Elicit alternatives for the blue words in the dialog and write them on the board. If students are unable to come up with alternatives themselves, provide these and explain the new word (see suggestions below). 3. Go through the alternatives, modeling pronunciation and explaining new words. 4. Have students repeat the dialog, substituting the new words. When they have completed the dialog, have them change roles and do it again. Suggested alternatives for the words in blue in the dialog: Morning: Good morning, Afternoon, Good afternoon. Hi: Hello. Im doing fine, thanks: Fine. Great, thanks. Very well, thanks. Extension 2 Have students greet each other formally, using titles and last names. They will need to make new nametags (consisting of title and last name). Extension 3 Have students imagine that they are a famous personan actor, a politician, a pop singer, or a sportswoman/man (Tom Cruise, George Bush, Mariah Carey, etc.) Tell

the students that they are at a party. Have them walk around the room, introducing themselves to the other "famous people."

Role Play: Making a Telephone Call


Summary: Students role play making a telephone call, practicing names and titles. Language Point: Intonation in greetings Groups: Pairs Procedure 1. Create pairs. Designate one student as A and the other as B. 2. Tell Students A to go to page 2 and Students B to go to page 3. Remind students to cover their partners page. 3. Give students time to look through the notes. Circulate and assist with vocabulary as necessary. 4. Add names to the example dialog in the Communication Companion. Write a name for A and B on the board. Do a choral repetition of each line of the dialog; modeling appropriate intonation in greetings. 5. Explain that students have to write the callers name in the telephone message when they are the secretaries. 6. Have students sit back to back to simulate the feeling of a phone call. Remind students that Student A needs to make the sound of a phone ringing to begin the conversation. 7. When they have completed the dialog, have them change roles and do it again. 8. Interviews
Summary: Students interview four other students, fill in the table, and then introduce these people to the rest of the class, practicing first names, last names, and hometowns. Groups: Groups of 5 Procedure 1. Draw the table on the board. Demonstrate the activity by having the students interview you and writing your first name, last name, and hometown in the table under the column marked "You." 2. Tell students to work alone and fill in their own first name, last name, and hometown in the column marked "You." 3. Have students interview four other people. As they interview each student, they should write their information in the boxes (14). 4. When they have finished, have students introduce the people they talked to. They should approach the person, then turn to the class and say, "This is ___ from ____," then go up to the next person and again say, "This is ______ from _____," and so on. Extension With books closed, go up to each student in turn and ask the class "Who is this?" See if they can remember everyones name and where they are from.

Meet the Characters


Summary: Students become familiar with the characters in the course by listening to short descriptions provided by the teacher; students practice listening to names and information about the characters. Groups: Whole class Procedure 1. Give students time to look at the pictures and name labels. Tell students that they will see these characters throughout the course. 2. Read each characters name. Do a choral repetition. 3. Now tell the students that you will tell them about the characters in the course. Instruct them to point to the character they hear being described. If you have a monolingual class, use the students native language to describe the characters. If you have a multilingual class, you may choose to introduce only the characters names or give the students as much information about the characters as you think they can handle. 4. Model the activity. Hold up your book and point to Emi Okada so that the students can see who you are talking about (or use a transparency if you have an overhead projector). Say, "This is Emi Okada. She is a student. Shes staying with the Arnold family." Or "This is Emi Okada. Shes a student." Or "This is Emi Okada." 5. Using the following dialog, tell the class about each of the characters, or just say their names. 6. Check to see that students are pointing to the appropriate characters in their books as you describe the characters or say their names. 7. When you have described all the characters or gone through all the names, point to the pictures one at a time and ask the class, "Whats her name?" Matching Game
Summary: Students match character names and pictures in order to further familiarize themselves with the characters in the course. Groups: Pairs Procedure 1. Create pairs. 2. Explain that students need to match the names to the pictures. 3. Model the activity for the class. Holding your book up (or using a transparency if you have an overhead projector), point to Emis name in the left column. Mime scanning for her picture. Then point to it and say, "This is Emi Okada." Write the letter b in front of number 5 in the left column. 4. Instruct students to work with their partner to match the characters and the pictures. Tell them to cover page 4 as they do the activity. 5. Circulate and assist as necessary. 6. When all pairs have finished the task, ask the class to tell you their matches. For example, ask, "Who is letter b?" Allow students to answer until you hear the appropriate name. Give students the answer if no one answers correctly. Create groups of 5 so that each group has a Student A, B, C, D, and E. 2. Students A and B begin. Tell them to use their own names. 3. Extra Classroom Practice


Summary: Students do a dialog build-up to practice greetings and farewells. Language Point: Intonation in greetings and farewells Groups: Whole class Procedure 1. Tell the students the context for the dialog: two people meet in an elevator. 2. Draw a clock on the board to indicate a time for afternoon. 3. Write the first sentence of the dialog with blanks on the board (e.g., A: _______.). 4. Ask students to tell you the missing word. Allow students to guess until somebody says the right word (Hello). Allow variations (Hi). 5. Write that word in the blank, and move on to the next sentence. 6. Continue this process for each line of the dialog. 7. Once the dialog is complete, have students do a choral repetition. Model the target language/pronunciation point. Reinforce how your voice rises and falls by moving your hands up and down.
