Applications and admissions: the Bachelors program In order to be admitted to a Bachelors program in the Faculty for Mechanical Engineering, you will need to have not only adequate German skills (see Language requirements), but also a qualification equivalent to the German Abitur that permits you to attend an institute of higher education, ideally showing good grades. Please use Uni-assist e.V. (Berlin) to check whether your qualification entitles you to study at TUM. The Uni-assist check will take approximately three weeks and is subject to a fee. You can find information about Uni-assist here: http://portal.mytum.de/studium/bewerbung/uniassist?searchterm=uniassist Once Uni-assist has made a decision, please submit this to the TUM Matriculation Office, 80290 Munich. While Uni-assist is in the process of checking your qualification for college-level studies, please also apply to TUM online for a spot in your desired major. You can find the application portal here: http://portal.mytum.de/studium/bewerbung/bewerbung_inland In addition to the online application, you will need to submit some documents by mail. Please consult the document list at the end of your online application to determine which documents are required in your particular case. In every case, the following must be submitted:

A notarized copy of your certificate of higher-education qualification For higher-education qualification certificates in a language other than German, English or French: an additional notarized translation of your higher-education qualification certificate. A notarized translation can be obtained for a fee from either a German consulate or a certified translator.

Proof of German language skills (see Language requirements) Passport photo Rsum with information about schooling and degrees Personal statement Proof of previous programs of study (if applicable)

Please send your documents to the TUM Matriculation Office, 80290 Munich. Applications will be accepted between May 15 and July 15 (for the winter semester) and between November 15 and January 15 (for the summer semester). Please note: The Matriculation Office must receive your application and your documents by July 15 / January 15. If this does not occur, your application will not be considered. New students in the Faculty for Mechanical Engineering must begin their studies in the winter semester. If your higher-education qualification is comparable to the German Abitur, please take part in the eligibility determination process. This selection process is used to determine which applicants will be accepted to study at the Faculty for Mechanical Engineering. The purpose of this process is to prevent students who are clearly unsuited for these programs, or who have misconceptions about the programs specific requirements, from having to leave the program partway through, after only a few semesters. The most important selection criterion is the Abitur grade. However, this is not the only decisive factor. Grades in mathematics, physics and the applicants native language are also important. Applicants with good to very good grades are invited to take part in a selection interview on the campus in Garching. There you will have the opportunity to convince us of your suitability in person, in combination with the personal statement you have already submitted. High-school graduates with poor to average grades will not be accepted. The details of this process are established by the regulations governing determination of eligibility, which can be found on the Facultys web site (http://www.mw.tum.de/main.php?cid=506). At the end of the eligibility process we will inform you whether we are able to offer you a spot in your desired major. At that point, you

will have 14 days to accept your spot. Please submit your acceptance via your applicant account. As soon as your complete documents and fees have been received by the Matriculation Office, you will be definitively registered, and you can download your academic paperwork via your TUM-online account. Please note: Your matriculation is only valid for one semester at a time! It is very important that you re-register each semester to avoid being de-matriculated. If your higher-education qualification is not equivalent to a German Abitur, you must complete an assessment test at the Studienkolleg, or Preparatory College (www.studienkolleg.mhn.de), before beginning your studies. Classes at the Preparatory College (duration: two semesters, 30-35 hours per week) will prepare you for the assessment test. It is not possible to apply directly for admission to the Preparatory College. Please apply for your desired major at the TUM, and the Matriculation Office will forward your documents to the Preparatory College. In order to be accepted at the Preparatory College, applicants must complete both a German and a mathematics test at the beginning of September or the middle of February. Each semester at the Preparatory College can only be repeated once. Applicants who study at the Preparatory College are enrolled at the TUM Preparatory College for the duration of their studies (Preparatory studies for foreign applicants). Legal regulations Entry regulations Prospective student applicants from the EU/EEA states and several other countries (the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, South Korea, Israel and Switzerland) can enter Germany without a visa. All other foreign students must have a visa from the diplomatic mission of the Federal Republic of Germany in their country of origin. Applications for this visa must be submitted to the German diplomatic mission in your home country well in advance of your entry (at least 2 months in advance!). Important note: foreign students who can provide evidence of acceptance by a German institute of higher education or a Preparatory College will receive a student visa. Prospective students have the option to apply for a student applicant visa. This visa allows you to gather information about studying in Germany or fulfill any missing requirements before you apply. With this visa, you can extend your residence title without having to first leave the country

and return. However, you must first provide proof of your eligibility for college-level studies during the visa process. One way to do so is to provide a certificate from Uni-assist (http://portal.mytum.de/studium/bewerbung/uniassist?searchterm=uniassist). Please do not enter Germany on a tourist visa; these cannot be converted into student visas!

The residence title is bound to a specific purpose (such as pursuing a specific degree). It becomes null and void once this purpose has been fulfilled, or if it is abandoned.

Health insurance

All students in Germany must have health insurance; in other words, they must provide evidence of sufficient health and care insurance coverage and pay the premiums in order to matriculate at a German institute of higher education. Practically speaking, this means that you must obtain evidence of sufficient health coverage from a recognized healthinsurance company in Germany before your matriculation. You can find more information here: www.deutscheinsurance.de.

Employment Matriculated foreign students and doctoral candidates who do not come from the old EU countries are permitted to work in Germany for a maximum of 90 full days or 180 half days (up to 4 hours per day) per calendar year. In addition, they are permitted to hold an academic/scientific side job at the university all year long. However, in this event their residence title must include the approval for foreign citizens from the Aliens Registration Office. Please consider that in order to work more than three months a year you will need a work permit from the Employment Office (http://www.arbeitsagentur.de). Foreign students coming from the old EU countries have the same employment rights as German students do. You can find job-search help here: TUM Career Service Ms. Amelie Lemke career@tum.de or: Employment Office Student Services Tumblingerstr. 21 80337 Munich or: Job Caf TUM Cafeteria, Garching Lichtenbergstr. 2 85748 Garching www.jobcafe.de

Stipends and financial aid

There is no financial support for the complete length of study, in other words from the first semester through graduation. The DAAD has collected a database of information about financial support for foreign students: http://www.daad.de/deutschland/foerderung/stipendiendatenbank/00462.de.html TUM does not grant stipends to new students. However, if you have already studied at TUM for at least two semesters (Bachelors and Diplom) or one semester (Masters) and can provide evidence of the appropriate grades, you can apply for a stipend. You can find more information at the Student Service Center: Stipend Office Arcisstr. 21 80333 Munich Tel. (089) 289-22252 schneiderm@zv.tum.de

Living in Munich Finding a room in Munich can be difficult, especially at the beginning of the winter semester. Most of Munichs approximately 80,000 students live in private rooms and apartments. Only 12% live in dormitories. In Germany, the dorms do not belong to the universities; most are operated by the student union. Students register their addresses directly in the dorms. Depending on the dormitory, the waiting period can be one to four semesters. At the beginning of each semester, the student union holds a lottery for available rooms. Doctoral candidates are not permitted to apply for a space in the dormitories. The average rent for sublet rooms is approximately 260. Rooms in shared living situations and apartments cost between 200 and 600. Dormitory rooms cost between 160 and 360. Patience is essential during the housing search, which can take up to three months during the winter semester. Comprehensive information about living in Munich can be found here: http://www.studentenwerk-muenchen.de/wohnen
