BIOGRAPHY
Matt Roberts is one of the most recognized Dental Ceramists in the United States. He grew up working in his fathers dental practice where he became interested in dentistry. He attended college at Idaho State University. In 1979 he founded CMR Dental Laboratory. Matt Roberts is an accredited member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. He lectures nationally and internationally and has worked with many of the leading clinicians in the country. He is on the editorial board of Practical Periodontal and Esthetic Dentistry, and Signature Magazine. Matt Roberts is the founder of Team Esthetic Seminars and holds advanced level training classes for dentists and ceramists. His goals are to elevate the quality of restorative treatment received by patients by creating an interactive working relationship between dentists, ceramists and other specialists.

How does IPS e.max satisfy your esthetic requirements for a restorative material? When I evaluate the clinical situation and the patients needs, then ask myself which restorative material accomplishes the goals of the case, with the exception of bridgework, the answer is almost always IPS e.max lithium disilicate. The material is very versatile from a functional standpoint and displays unbelievable esthetics. What has been your most memorable case experience with IPS e.max? Seeing the final result of a diastema closure case where the average facial thickness of the restorative material was 0.2 to 0.3 mm. What do you find most beneficial about the processing of IPS e.max in the fabrication of esthetic restorations? I find the ability to press very thin restorations to eliminate most of the need for feldspathic refractory based veneers.

I can now get the same results with pressed veneers in most situations. What do you feel are the advantages of working with a material such as IPS e.max? We have found an amazing business model for posterior CAD/CAM restorations in our lab. The esthetic result of high translucency milled IPS e.max has our clients excited, the high strength of the material lets me sleep better at night and it is a new profit centre for our business.

August Bruguera trained as a dental technician and received further training at private dental laboratories in various European countries. He is a honorary member of ACADEN (Asociacin Cientfica para Defensa e Investigacin de la Prtesis Dental). August Bruguera is the author of various specialist articles, which have appeared in international magazines. He also gives lectures at international meetings and congresses. In addition, he is a member of the editorial board of Dental Dialogue (Spanish issue) as well as of the magazine Esttica. Moreover, he is the author of the textbooks Shades a world of colours and Invisible: Esthetic Ceramic Restorations (with Prof. Sidney Kina). Between 1999 and 2002, August Bruguera worked at the University of Barcelona as a professor in the postgraduate program of Dr Toms Escun. In 2003, he received the Bistur de oro award. August Bruguera is the head of the dental lab and training centre Disseny Dental bcn in Barcelona and of Dental excellence, Spain.

Mr Bruguera, how do you relax? My two big passions are skiing and sailing. However, I have added a new one only recently: our twins. To look after them can be exhausting, but also very rewarding.

And how do you make your life as a dental technician easier? Unfortunately, ceramic restorations are never easy to fabricate. Experience and new materials such as IPS e.max, which features chromatic properties similar to those of natural dentin, simplify our work considerably. What do you particularly like about IPS e.max? For me its an utterly comprehensive system. The large variety of materials and the different levels of translucency open up numerous esthetic possibilities. Michele Temperani is a certified dental technician who specialized in the field of fixed denture prosthetics in the USA, where he attended the courses of the Tanaka Dental Technology Institute and the seminars of Masahiro Kuwata at the University of Washington. For three years, he was the head of the ceramic department at Kijosato Okamoto dental lab in Seattle (USA). He regularly participates in the Continuing Education Project in Seattle which is held each year. Since 1990, he has been the co-owner of a dental laboratory in Florence (Italy) together with his brother, where he specializes in ceramic restorations. He has been using the press technique for the fabrication of all-ceramic restorations since 1998. He conducts courses and holds lectures at international meetings on a regular basis and is the author of numerous publications.

Which role do esthetics and style as well as the material selected play in dental technology? I work in Florence, the city of art and style. Artistry, style and esthetics are the added value my dentists and I have come to expect. In order to meet these requirements, appropriate materials and techniques need to be used.

Dr Urs Brodbeck is a Specialist SSO/SSRD for Reconstructive Dentistry who runs a private practice at the Dental Clinic North-Zurich, Switzerland. He works as an instructor at the Prophylaxis Clinic Zurich and holds lectures on all-ceramic reconstructions and esthetic dentistry worldwide. From 1986 to 1988, Dr Brodbeck worked as an assistant in a private dental practice in Davos, Switzerland. From 1988 to 1990 he worked as an assistant in the Department of Crown and Bridge Prosthodontics and Dental Materials at the Centre for Dental and Oral Medicine and Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery of the University of Zurich. From 1990 to 1994, Dr Brodbeck was Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Crown and Bridge Prosthodontics and Dental Materials at the Centre for Dental and Oral Medicine and CranioMaxillofacial Surgery of the University of Zurich. He was a visiting lecturer at the University of Sydney, Australia, in 1995. In 1996 he became Associate Professor in the Department for Preventive Dentistry, Periodontology and Cariology at the Centre for Dental and Oral Medicine and Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery of the University of Zurich.

Mr Brodbeck, as a dentist what do you consider to be the future challenges of dentistry? More emphasis should be placed on prevention in the dental practice. The primary goal should be to avoid damage, not to repair it. Unfortunately, prophylaxis is still leading a wallflower existence in many places.

Oliver Brix is a trained dental technician. Since 1989 he has worked in various dental laboratories and dental practices. He specializes in the fields of esthetics and function, PFM ceramics and all-ceramics, biomechanical occlusal surface design, the electroplating technique and implantology. From 1990 to 1998 he participated in various continuing education programs at home and abroad. Since 1994 he has worked as a freelance collaborator in several dental practices in the field of functional and esthetic fixed prostheses. He has conducted various continuing education courses and lectures on a freelance basis and holds lectures on the subject of esthetics and ceramics worldwide, also as a guest lecturer for Ivoclar Vivadent. Oliver Brix has been a member of the Zahntechnischer Arbeitskreis Dsseldorf (Dusseldorf study group of dental technicians) since 1997 and an active member of the DGZ" (German association of esthetic dentistry) since 2000. Since 2006, he has been running his own business in Wiesbaden, Germany.

Mr Brix, if you could travel through time, what would be more appealing to you, the past or the future? As far as my private life is concerned, I would like to travel to the past now and again, but professionally, the future within a time period of around 10 years from now would be very intriguing. In your work you keep up with the times and rely on the quality of IPS e.max. Why? After having worked and gathered considerable experience with previous allceramic materials for more than 14 years, I have found that the IPS e.max system combines all the important experiences and innovations. The system provides application flexibility and allows reliable results to be achieved. Which product of the IPS e.max range do you like to use best and why? My favourite product is the IPS e.max Press MO 0 ingot, which I use for crown copings. Its fluorescence and brightness are ideal for mimicking the natural ap-

pearance of teeth in this respect. For onlays and partial crowns I definitely like to use the highly translucent IPS e.max Press HT ingot best. Its strength, homogeneity and shade behaviour suit my needs.

What, according to your opinion, is the future of all-ceramics, particularly of IPS e.max? All-ceramics have a great future and will replace other restorative materials used so far, such as metal. BIOGRAPHY
Dr Christian Coachman received his dental degree from the University of So Paulo and his dental technology certificate from Rocha Marmo School (So Paulo, Brazil). He completed a dental ceramic specialization program and opened his own laboratory in 1996. Dr Coachman was an instructor at the Ceramoart Ceramic Training Centre (So Paulo, Brazil) in 2001. From 2001 to 2004, he worked as a technical consultant at Oraltech, So Paulo. He is a founder of and has been a lecturer at the Insight Group Ceramic Training Centre (Bauru, Brazil) since 2003. He is a member of the Brazilian society of esthetic dentistry. From 2004 to 2008, Dr Coachman was the head ceramist of Team Atlanta consisting of Dr Ronald Goldstein, Dr David Garber and Dr Maurice Salama. He lectures and publishes internationally in the fields of cosmetic dentistry, oral rehabilitation, dental ceramics and dental implants.

Mr Coachman, when you think of IPS e.max, what immediately comes to your mind? I primarily think of the vast array of solutions, versions and choices that this system offers. My favourite is the press technique.

What is the biggest benefit you derive from using IPS e.max? IPS e.max provides everything I need. The system allows me to create naturallooking restorations in a very simple way. I thus achieve my goals under much less pressure. The IPS e.max system thus gives you numerous application options. For which indications do you use it primarily? Whenever patients demand an esthetic result. This goes far beyond indications and includes all procedures that lead to an esthetic outcome. No matter

whether a central incisor that is very challenging or a complete dental arch involving a combination of veneers, crowns and implants need to be restored. The different opacity and translucency levels of IPS e.max enable me to fabricate highly esthetic, metal-free restorations independent of the individual situation. What do the patients say who have received restorations fabricated with IPS e.max products? They find the appearance of the restoration and the absence of metal particularly appealing. BIOGRAPHY
Shigeo Kataoka is an internationally acclaimed ceramic specialist, teacher and lecturer. He joined the Osaka Dental Studio Co. Ltd in 1969. He attended Yukioka Medical Technology School, which he completed successfully in 1972. He taught at the Apex Company (Los Angeles, USA) for three years, starting in 1980. In 1984, he established the Osaka Ceramic Training Centre. Then, in 1989, he founded the private laboratory Kataoka Ceramic Ltd and in 1993 the Osseo Integration Implant Laboratory, both in Osaka, Japan. In addition, Shigeo Kataoka has written various technical articles on dental ceramics and implants. His first technical book Natures morphology was published in 1993. In 2006, his second technical book Harmony appeared in Japanese.

Mr Kataoka, are you the spontaneous or the more contemplative type? I am the type of person who weighs the pros and cons for a long time and then takes a thoughtful, prudent decision. Dr David Hornbrook, who graduated from UCLA School of Dentistry, Los Angeles, USA, has consulted with numerous manufacturers in product development and refinement. He has been a guest faculty member of the post-graduate programs in Cosmetic Dentistry at various universities in the United States. He currently practices in San Diego, CA. Dr Hornbrook is on the editorial board of Practical Procedures & Esthetic Dentistry, Contemporary Esthetics, Signature, and is the past editor of the Journal of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. He is also the current clinical editor of the Dental Practice Report, as well as a member of the Esthetic Dentistry Research Group. BIOGRAPHY
Grald Ubassy completed his basic training as a dental technician in Montpellier in 1979. In 1982, he established a private laboratory and specialized in ceramics. Two years later, he won an award in the Komet-Cd Pen Contest. In 1986, he received the gold medal as Best Technician in France. His publications in French and German journals and his presentations at international symposia and seminars have established his reputation well beyond France. His first technical book entitled Shape and Colour appeared in 1992, and his second book, Analysis the new way in dental communication, was published in 1996. Both books were well received in professional circles. His latest textbook Tips and Tricks appeared in 2008.

Mr Ubassy, do you like to solve addition and subtraction problems? I always liked maths in school, but there has hardly ever been an opportunity to use these skills in my profession so far.
