Dellware Becomes a $1 Billion Business During the past year, the DellWare division of Dell has worked to increase beyond the box revenue associated with the order fulfillment of third-party software and peripherals. The success of the beyond the box initiative helped make DellWare a billion-dollar business this year. DellWare products, such as printers, monitors, scanners, software, and other accessories, are sold to customers through online channels and traditional phone sales, and subsequently procured through supply chain distribution partners. The efficiency of the supply chain directly affects DellWares customer service, productivity, and profitability. In an effort to support future growth projections, DellWare recently piloted Microsoft BizTalk Server 2000 to facilitate efficient supply chain integration, and to enhance the technology required to support business visions.

We (DellWare) chose Microsoft Biz Talk Server 2000 because it offers us the interoperability we need for supply-chain integration and management. It also provides business process orchestration capabilities needed to implement standards such as RosettaNet.

Improving the Supply Chain DellWares requirements associated with this pilot included flexible integration with suppliers, the ability to easily share data and documents, and near real-time order fulfillment automation. The objective of these requirements was benefits realization in greater supply chain efficiency, as well as faster turnaround, and enhanced customer experience. Increasing data accuracy, and making data more accessible, both internally and externally in a variety of formats, was essential to success as well. Finally, order processing had to be relatively frictionless to raise profitability and lower operating costs. Dellwares Integrated Supply Chain The foundation for implementing BizTalk Server 2000 is the flexible base of Microsoft.NET Enterprise Servers. .NET allows the solution architecture to leverage the existing codebase, and supports the implementation of other standard bodies such as RosettaNet. BizTalk Server 2000s Editor creates both internal and external XML schemas that allow internal personnel and external vendors to efficiently interact with business data, regardless of data format. ASP integrates documents received from partners into DellWares system. A single transaction set in the order fulfillment process was put into production. Using RosettaNet standards, a price and availability partner interface process (PIP3A2) was implemented. By partnering with Ingram Micro, this transaction allows DellWare to inquire on a near-real time basis for stock availability of backordered SKUs. Future plans include upgrading all business-to-business transactions from EDI to near real-time automated XML transactions through BizTalk Server 2000. Accurate, Automated Delivery from BizTalk Server 2000 The BizTalk Server 2000 pilot implementation supports DellWares sophisticated supply chain requirements by providing the infrastructure, integration, management, and automation of a B2B e-commerce solution. It will also allow DellWare to upgrade their solution to a near-real time operation using XML standards. This real-time delivery is expected to dramatically increase supply chain efficiency, customer experience and the overall return on investment for DellWare. Find Success with .NET The .NET Enterprise Servers are Microsofts comprehensive server family for quickly building and managing an integrated, Web-enabled enterprise. Designed with scalable, mission critical performance in mind, Microsoft.NET Enterprise Servers will deliver reliability and manageability for the global, Web enabled enterprise while delivering on the best performance in its class. .NET Enterprise Servers are built from the ground up for interoperability. With production ready out of the box applications, and the worlds largest partner base of developers and software vendors. .NET Enterprise Servers deliver fast time to market for the Web-ready enterprise.
