QUESTION 1

a)

Cite the factor which leads to the existence of different type of atomic bonding in materials. Discuss the effects of these atomic bonding on the properties of materials. (6 marks) Platinum crystallized as face centered cubic with density of 21.40 g/cm 3 and atomic weight of 195.10 g/mol. Given that the Avogadro's number is 6.023 x 1023 atoms/mol, determine the lattice parameter and atomic radius of Platinum atom. (6 marks)

b)

QUESTION 2 a) Distinguish between proeutectoid ferrite and eutectoid ferrite. A plain carbon steel containing 0.65 percent C is slowly cooled from 950 C to a temperature just above 727C. Calculate the relative amount of proeutectoid ferrite and austenite in this steel. (6 marks) Define an isothermal transformation in the solid state. Draw a complete isothermal transformation diagram for a plain eutectoid steel and indicate the various transformation products on it. (3 marks) c) Explain how isothermal transformation able to develop different type of microstructures in steel. (3 marks)

b)

QUESTION 3 a) A piece of plain carbon steel containing 0.4 weight percent carbon is to be used for gear production. The gear needs to be hardened at the surface while maintaining its original hardness value and ductility at the inner part. Describe the heat treatment process that could be carried out in order to achieve the required properties. Sketch and name the resultant microstructures that are present in the steel as a result of the process. (6 marks)

b)

List three main differences between heat treatment of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Discuss the properties changes due to heat treatment of ferrous and non ferrous metals in term of microstructures and properties. (6 marks)

QUESTION 4 a) Explain from the atomic point of view why ceramics exist with high melting temperature, high hardness and insulative towards the passage of electricity. (6 marks) With the aid of neat sketches distinguish the stress-strain behaviour of thermoplastics from thermosetting plastics. Determine the polymer which has higher flexibility from the standpoint of their molecular structure. (6 marks)

b)

QUESTION 5 a) State the two main components of composite. Explain the role of either one of the component with respect to properties of the composite. (5 marks) An aligned and continuous fibre-reinforeced composite is manufactured from epoxy, E-glass fibre and carbon fibre. The properties of the materials are tabulated in Table Q5(b).

b)

Materials Epoxy E-glass fibre Carbon fibre

Tensile Strength (MPa) 65 2000 3300 Table Q5(b)

Young's Modulus (GPa) 4 70 200

i)

From the data given, determine the tensile strength and Young's modulus for composite which contains 30 per cent by volume of E-glass fibre. (3 marks) Determine the tensile strength and Young's modulus for a hybrid composite which contains 20 per cent by volume of E-glass fibre and 10 per cent by volume of Carbon fibre . (2 marks) Differentiate the tensile strength of the hybrid composite from the one which is reinforced by E-glass fibre only and briefly explain for the differences in terms of values and reinforcement structure. (2 marks)
