Hospital Upgrade Project (HUG)

Saint Agnes Hospital was built in 1903 and has served rural and urban areas. The hospital is considered a non-profit hospital and is supported by fees and donations from many different sources. It is one of the best and most personable healthcare facilities since its inception. St. Agnes has been a children's hospital since 1965 and now specializes in life threatening diseases of children ages 1 month to16 years old. The hospital was considered for demolition during the 1990s but the supporters of the hospital did not want to see such a beautiful landmark of their community destroyed. The hospital was earthquake retrofitted in 1995 and completely restored to its 1903 appearance in 2001. During the 2001 remodel there was not enough funding to consider all the modern day advances in diagnostic equipment that would be running over the network. These collaboration advances can shorten the amount of time a child needs to be in the hospital and can keep costs down for the overall program. The facility is still using old PCs with Windows 2000 operating system. Some servers are old Novell based dedicated UNIX servers. Some of the servers have been updated to Windows Server 2000 yet some are still Windows NT 4.0.

Hospital Upgrade Project (HUG) (continued)

There are two wings of the hospital. The West wing is dedicated to ages 6 months to 6 years. While the East wing is dedicated to ages 7-16 years. Each floor has 11 patient rooms. During the 2001 remodel, false floors were installed anticipating the need for more connectivity throughout the building. Each patient floor of the hospital contains the following:
11 Patient rooms 1 Nurses station 1 Reception area 1 Equipment storage area (PC room included) 1 Wiring closet with a server

The patient rooms after the remodel of 2001 contain the following:
4 Ethernet connections 2 Cable TV connections 1 Video camera surveillance camera Oxygen and purified water as needed for specific treatments

The Nurses' station is centrally located. This is very efficient and is open on all four sides. The station contains the following:
2 PCs 1 Table 4 locked cabinets

The Reception area is an open area so as to allow families to feel more at home. This area contains:
3 PCs Couches and chairs Multiple video cameras 4 Ethernet connections

The equipment storage area is a locked area with no windows and a single door. Many items that are needed for long term use are stored in this area. They could be:
4 Laptop PCs Numerous IV units and stands Portable x-ray machines Robotic doctors Equipment racks Switches Patch panels UPS Server

The Wiring closet contains all the connections for the network and video surveillance. The following items are in the closet:

Network Associates Responsibilities

You have been given the job of upgrading all the PCs to Windows XP Professional. Be sure that they have the power to handle Windows 7 when it is adopted for use by the healthcare organization the HUG is a member. You will need to configure the server for its own DNS and as a DHCP server for your floor. You will need to troubleshoot connections to the main hospital servers and fix them as needed. You are on call if an emergency request is put in for your floors by any of the working employees. Estimate the amount of equipment to do the upgrades per floor. Understand the IP scheme and implement it at the PC and Server level.

Network Associates Tasks

Open Packet Tracer File and do an inventory of the donated Equipment (PT file). Consider what will be needed to do the upgrades. Observe the floor plan drawings and know where all connections would be. Troubleshoot any device with no connectivity. Configure all devices for the correct networks. Make recommendations as needed for equipment upgrades. Estimate the amount of time needed to install upgrades.
