Phase 1-Speed Detection (July 08-October08): A Simple Contraption consisting of a Speed gun, Camera and a Microprocessor. An ATMEGA 16 was programmed for to detect over speeding and trigger the camera. Guide: Dr. P. Vivekananda Shanmuganathan, Division Leader-Mechatronics, VITU Cost: Rs.21000/ $460(Approx.) Finished first in Golden Design Challenge an industry defined problem challenge held during SHAASTRA 08 at IIT Chennai. (Media Coverage: Simple Innovations Garner Top Honours) Phase 2(August09-October09): A full fledged Vision system using an industry grade high speed camera and a DSP Board (NI CVS-1454) was developed. It was programmed using Lab View 8.6. Brief Algorithm: Acquisition-> Determining ROI->Image Calibration (Pixel to real world Coordinates- Overcoming perspective distortion) -> Edges Overlay->Relative Displacement of Target along an edge in successive frames->Speed Measurement->Violation Detection>Image Capture-> Speed Value Overlay Guide: Dr. Z.C.Alex, Director, School of Electronics Engineering, VITU

Cost: Rs. 300000/$6600 Finished second at the NI-Yantra 2009 (conducted by National Instruments, India) Phase 3(Jan10-June10): (IIEC 2010) A Fully functional embedded system was developed using Intel Atom Based Board, 10 Touch Module (for I/O), High Speed Camera. The same Algorithm was retained and an executable was created and installed on a Windows Embedded XP OS. Guides: Dr. Z.C.Alex , Director, School of Electronics Engineering ,VITU Mr. Laxmi Narasimhan R., Senior Application Developer, Intel Technology India Ltd Cost: Rs.75000/$1650 Finished first at the INTEL INDIA EMBEDDED CHALLENGE 2010 4) Digital Kite Anemometry ( December 09-March10) : To study the Convective Boundary layer Profile along the coastline in Pondicherry, India an economic low cost digital anemometer was developed using an AVR Butterfly Datalogger. Using an on board temperature sensor, It was programmed to note temperature values across different height in its flight. The Data was imported into Mathematica and interpolated using cubic splines to obtain the most accurate profile for further analysis. Guide: Dr.Satyajit Ghosh, Senior Professor, VITU Cost: Rs.1200/$ 26 5) A Multipurpose Solar Thermal Unit for Power Generation and Water Heating (Nov 08-Feb09): A 10kW solar thermal power plant was developed from scratch using organic rankine cycle (the working fluid being R123), screw expander and a scroll compressor.Solar heat was obtained through a series of flat plate collector of net area 54m 2.The waste heat was recovered to heat water. A plate heat exchanger was designed to facilitate the same. This was designed to serve as a backup generator cum hot water geyser for an apartment housing 10 families of 4 members each. Cost: Rs.600,000/$13300(estimated) Payback Period: 6 years (estimated) Finished second in Industry Defined Problem competition conducted by IIT-Khraghpur and GE.
