Larger than life.
That, according to Nick Mour-
tos, is how his father will be re-
membered.
There was a life celebration for
Chris Mourtos at his business
the Coastline Bar and Grill in
Cherry Hill which was attended
by dozens of people. Chris died on
June 6 from lung cancer.
Hes going to be remembered
as somebody who was larger than
life, Nick, 29, said. From the
way he dressed to the way he
talked to the way he voiced his
opinions and to the way he
showed his enormous, generous
heart to the community and any-
body who needed anything.
Chris owned the Coastline for
33 years .
Anything he did he worked
hard at it, Nick said of his father,
who came from Greece with noth-
ing. He is the embodiment of the
American dream.
Nick also said that, despite his
success, his father never forgot
where he came from.
He said Chris was completely
committed to giving back to the
community and helping those
who were less fortunate.
Until the day he died, that is
something he believed in whole
heartedly, Nick said, noting his
dad used the Coastline as a vehi-
cle to help, whether it be Camden
County Bar Association or fund-
raisers for police officers, fire
fighters, and military personnel.
He said the family is commit-
ted to continuing Mourtos good
works.
Nicks mother, Dawn Mourtos,
will now run the restaurant. She
has been involved with it since it
opened.
She is more than capable of
stepping in and taking over, pick-
ing up where my dad left off,
Nick said. We all have faith in
her and we all know she can do
it.
Dawn, who was married to
Chris for more than 30 years, has
lived in Medford for the last 15
years.
It was incredible, she said of

Private First Class and Iraq
veteran Lawrence Trip Spell-
man was welcomed home in rock
star fashion recently.
David Silver, a volunteer with
the Yellow Ribbon Club, helped
organize the homecoming which
included an escort by Medford Po-
lice. The Medford fire company
was also on hand as well as a con-
tingent of Warriors Watch mo-
torcycle club.
They bring the thunder, Sil-
ver said of the Warriors Watch,
and the Yellow Ribbon Club
brings the lightning.
I wish we could bring home
every soldier in this fashion, he
said. Hopefully well make him
realize how grateful we are for his
service.
The Yellow Ribbon Club sup-
ports troops and families while
deployed and organizes home-
comings.
Ira Dolich, from Marlton, is a
member of the Coast Guard Aux-
iliary and has been a member of
the Yellow Ribbon Club for five
years.
We consider it to be a great or-
ganization and its an honor to be
involved with this, Dolich said.
Every one of them is a hero.
This is the land of the free and
the home of the brave and be-
cause were at the home of the
brave we can do this in the land of
the free, he added.
Last year, the Yellow Ribbon
Club sent 10 tons of nonperish-
able items like toothbrushes, bars
of soap, and instant soup to those
deployed in Iraq and
Afghanistan.
Dolich said club members have
been manning tables at ShopRite
for three years. They hand lists of
desired items to shoppers and ask
for them to purchase at least one
of them.
Its unique, Dolich said.
Spellman, who did not expect
the homecoming, said it was
awesome.
Married for one year to Dana,
they have a 2-year-old child, Cole.
Its great to realize youre ap-
preciated, Trip said. He will be
discharged in 2012 and hopes to
become a police officer.
On July 24 he reports to Fort
Stewart in Georgia where he will
be a military police officer.
I was very proud of him but
scared, Dana said of Trips de-
ployment to Iraq.
She said she was concerned at

Senate Bill 2749, sponsored by
State Sen. Dawn Marie Addiego
after a female teenage driver re-
ported being stopped on a Med-
ford road by a man flashing an
emergency blue light and imper-
sonating a policeman, over-
whelmingly passed the Senate by
a vote of 39-0.
It is frightening to think about
what could happen during a
fraudulent car stop on the local
roadways, said Addiego. We are
increasing the penalties for any-
one who violates the publics
trust by presenting themselves as
a member of law enforcement.
Blue lights can be used legally
by volunteer firefighters and res-
cue squad members, when re-
sponding to an emergency. Office
of Emergency Management vol-
unteers can also use blue lights
during an emergency response.
Emergency blue lights are
valuable tools for our first-respon-
ders, but when they are misused
the public is placed at risk. It is
crucial that all drivers can be con-
fident that the flashing blue light

EDITORIAL
Why wont anyone leave
poor grandmom alone?
Can you imagine a president
that would threaten to take away
the meager subsistence of
grandma while he protects the
salaries of government and
union workers?
If your private company were
threatened with bankruptcy
your job would be gone in an in-
stant with no thought of unpaid
sick leave or unused vacation
time. What protects government
workers from being laid off or
their jobs eliminated?
There are hundreds if not
thousands of federal programs
that contribute little to the wel-
fare of this nation but for some
reason they and their minions
are off limits. Yet grandma
whose subsistence check, which
she funded out of her own pock-
et from years of labor or the
labor of her spouse, is the first to
be threatened because a bully
president cant continue to
spend money as he wishes.
It wasnt long ago that the fed-
eral debt ceiling was 1 trillion
dollars. Now it is $14 trillion and
that is not enough. Where does it
stop?
In round numbers the govern-
ment from taxes and other fees
takes in $200 billion a month. In-
terest on our colossal debt
amounts to about $20 billion.
Yet the Obama administration
wants to spend over $300 billion
a month and that is where the
problem is.
Do we need a government that
doesnt understand the bare
minimum of Economics 101?
You dont spend more than you
take in. You dont send millions
in foreign aid to shore up so
called friends that dont respect
us in the first place.
We dont keep a military in
posts a half a century after the
war was ended while we let thou-
sands invade our border every
year without consequence. It is
time we send a strong message
to those at every level of govern-
ment that enough is enough.
Eliminate those who are un-
able or unwilling to run our
country the way you have to run
your household. Take away the
perks of retention that keep
leaders in power and return the
country to that which was envi-
sioned by our founders; a gov-
ernment run by citizens who
gave of their time and then re-
turned to their private lives only
with the thanks of a job well
done.
Marion Eggleton
Heres an opportunity
to Give Back
Dear neighborhood business
owner,
Did you know 1 percent of
Americans are fighting our
wars? Wouldnt it be nice if 100
percent of Americans supported
our troops and their families?
We were inspired by First
Lady Michelle Obama and Dr.
Jill Bidens Joining Forces cam-
paign to Give Back to Ameri-
cas military families. They are
asking Americans to get in-
volved in any way they can.
That is why we are offering
our farm (Indian Acres Tree
Farm on Tuckerton Road) as a
venue for our business and our
community to help Give Back.
We are hosting a Military Ap-
preciation Day for the active
duty families of the Joint Forces
of Ft. Dix, McGuire Air Force
and Lakehurst. Our 160-acre
farm is the perfect place for this
kid friendly event.
We have an extensive free play
area, as well as many rides. The
event will be Saturday, Sept. 24
(Rain date Sept. 25).
We are offering the families
free pumpkin picking wagon
rides out to the pumpkin patch,
free food and free ride tickets as
our Give Back to the Troops
donation. Veterans will also be
appreciated with discounts and
various giveaways to honor their
past service.
We are contacting local busi-
nesses in our area who may
want to participate with the
community in the Give Back to
Our Troops event at Indian
Acres Tree Farm. We have differ-
ent ways to contribute/spon-
sor/volunteer for this event to fit
into everyones budget and time.

Still losing
But its still time to celebrate?
T
his must be an example of the new normal when it
comes to casinos in New Jersey.
Atlantic City casinos saw their revenues fall 3.7 percent in
June. The news was hailed by
some as a victory of sorts for
the industry since that was the
best showing since February,
when they saw revenue drop 1.4
percent.
Lets use gambling parlance
to translate: Hey, my slot ma-
chine stopped only one spot away from the jackpot! Or, That
horse I bet on to win came in a strong second!
You lose.
The casinos have been bleeding money. They still are bleed-
ing money. Only not as much. But it still stinks.
When it comes to the gambling race, New Jersey is way be-
hind, despite being given a huge head start. No sports betting.
Marketing efforts from the state/Atlantic City/the
casinos/some combination thereof are coordinated with all of
the precision and style of a kindergarten class first fire drill.
Nobody saw a threat from casinos popping up in neighboring
states: Dont worry about them. Those busloads of people
dont mind the extra two-hour drive. We have an ocean.
AC isnt dead, but it wont survive without dramatic changes:
a push to get sports gambling (which the state is trying to do,
but most likely wont succeed); coordinated marketing efforts;
cheaper food and hotels; and a general, overall effort to make
the place a destination point.
Vegas is Vegas for all of those reasons, and probably a few
more. And while that city has its problems housing bubble-
burst being No. 1 people still fly from all over the country to
visit, bypassing their local gambling joints to visit.
Until AC casinos get their act together, no one should be par-
tying on the boardwalk because the bad news isnt as bad.
A good bet?
Do you visit Atlantic City
casinos as often as you did
in the past, or do you visit
ones closer to home? Visit
www.medfordsun.com to
share your thoughts.
coming up behind them is some-
one responding to an emergency,
not a crime in the making, said
Assemblyman Patrick Delany.
The bill enhances the penalties
for certain offenses connected
with the impersonation of a law
enforcement officer. S-2749 clari-
fies that it would be a crime of the
fourth degree when a person im-
personates an officer by use of a
vehicle modified with emergency
lights or other insignia to resem-
ble a police vehicle. The offense is
punishable by a fine of up to
$10,000 and 18 months in prison.
The bill also doubles the cur-
rent penalties for the unautho-
rized use of emergency warning
lights, increasing the fine from
$100 to $200 plus revocation of the
privilege to operate emergency
lights, and from $200 to $400 for
individuals who are not author-
ized to use the lights.
In addition, the bill makes it a
disorderly persons offense to sell
or offer to sell a blue emergency
warning light, unless the pur-
chaser presents a valid identifica-
tion card (currently these cards
are issued to certain volunteer
fire or emergency services per-
sonnel).
The bill represents a composite
of three pieces of legislation in-
troduced by Addiego, and by As-
semblyman Scott Rudder and De-
lany in the lower house. The law-
makers planned to re-introduce a
bill identical to the Senate ver-
sion in the lower house.

the celebration. Weve got in-
credible customers.
Dawn said she plans to stay the
course at the Coastline.
Entertainment at the event was
provided by the trio Coastline All-
Star Band as well as Camden
County Emerald Society Pipes
and Drums.
Cherry Hill Mayor Bernie Platt
had glowing words of praise for
Chris.
Ive never met a more gener-
ous guy in the world, Platt said.
Chris was the kind of guy who
would give you the shirt off his
back.
He said Chriss generosity
helped the Coastline to thrive.
Platt also mentioned the schol-
arship fund in Mourtos name
that was recently created by the
family.
Thats something thats in per-
petuity and will be something
beautiful, he said.
Platt also said the tremendous
turnout at the life celebration is
indicative of the kind of person
Chris was.
I think this just shows the es-
teem that he was held in, the
mayor said. This is just a small,
small portion of the people that
he helped.
He also said many of Chriss
generous acts have gone unno-
ticed.
Antigone Mourtos, Chriss
niece, said she was heartbro-
ken when she found out Chris
had cancer.
She echoed many others by
saying her uncle was generous,
full of life, and had a strong work
ethic.
Hes going to be missed by
everybody, Antigone said.
Harry Starkman, CPA, repre-
sented Chris since day one at
the Coastline and worked with
Chriss father 45 years ago.
So Ive been in the family all
that time, Starkman said.
Chris was a give-all type of
person, he said. If he believed
in a cause there was nothing to
stop him.
He would even sacrifice his
time at his business to help out a
person or a cause, Starkman said.
He was a tremendous busi-
nessman, the accountant contin-
ued. In my opinion no one could
operate this type of business bet-
ter than him.
Starkman also said Chris will
be missed.
I believe he was a friend to
whomever he met, he said.
A scholarship fund has been es-
tablished in Chriss name at
Shawnee High School. The pur-
pose of this scholarship is to help
children who are in need, which
was a cause that was so close to
Chriss heart.
Those who wish to help in con-
tinuing Chriss dedication to giv-
ing back, please make tax-de-
ductible checks payable to:

Dana said both her and Trips
families are amazing.
I couldnt get through it with-

Dana also believes the home-

It really shows Trip and the

that what theyre doing really
matters, she said.
Trip was born in Washington,
D.C., in 1991 and moved to Med-

of Shawnee High School. After
high school, he left for basic train-

In January of 2010, he spent

He was deployed on July 4, 2010

Recently, United States Forces
Iraq Commander, Four Star Gen-

transferred $149,435.80 from the
fund into his personal bank ac-
count in May 2010. Arrowood
then used a portion of the money
to pay outstanding bills and cover
personal expenses such as cigars
and dining out. The trust fund
was established for Arrowoods
daughter by his father, in accor-
dance with his fathers last will
and testament. The alleged theft
was discovered after the girls
mother became suspicious and
checked on the balance of the
trust fund. Arrowood serves as
the tax assessor for the Camden
County municipalities of Laurel
Springs, Stratford, and Hi Nella.
The indictment was returned on
June 30. An arraignment will be
scheduled soon in Superior Court
in Burlington County. The investi-
gation was conducted by the Med-
ford Township Police Department
and the Burlington County Prose-
cutors Office.
