Please follow all the Instructions to Candidates given on the cover page of the answer book. All parts of a question should be answered consecutively. Each answer should start from a fresh page. Mobile phones and computers of any kind should not be brought inside the examination hall. Use of any unfair means will result in severe disciplinary action.

Q.1 (a).

Does Webmail use POP3, IMAP or neither? If one of these, why was that one chosen? If neither, which one is it closer to in spirit? When Web pages are sent out, they are prefixed with MIME headers. Why? [5 + 5 = 10] Apply Dijkstras algorithm on the following graph with S as the source node. Clearly show all your steps.

Q.1 (b).

Q.2 (a).

Q.2 (b).

For the network given in Q2 (a), assume that distance vector routing is used. After the routing tables had fully converged, Node A fails. Give the distances of Node A from all other nodes after 3 exchanges of routing tables have taken place. Show the distance details after each exchange. [5 + 5 = 10] Consider transferring an big file of L bytes from host A to host B. Assume a segment size of 1460 bytes. (i) What is the maximum value of L such that TCP sequence numbers are not exhausted? For L you obtain in (a), find how long it takes to transmit the file. Assume that a total of 66 bytes of transport, network and data-link header are added to each segment before the resulting packet is sent out over a 10Mbps link. Ignore flow control so A can pump out the segments back to back and continuously.

Q.3 (a).

Q.3 (b).

Consider the following data stream: 11000100100111010100010010011100. Using this data stream determine the corresponding 8 bit Checksum. [10 + 5 = 15] Page 1 of 2

Q.4

If the IP address of a host is given as 132.16.102.100/22 (i) What is the subnet mask? (In dotted decimal) (ii) What is the maximum number of hosts that can be assigned to each subnet? (iii) What is the network to which the above host belongs? (In dotted decimal) (iv) What is maximum number of subnets that can be defined? (v) List the first and the last host addresses that can be assigned to subnet number 10 and 13. (vi) What is the broadcast address for subnet number 10 and 13? [2 + 1 + 3 + 1 + 4 + 4 = 15] Suppose you are designing a selective repeat sliding windows protocol for a 1Mbps point-to point link to the moon, which has a one way latency of 1.25 seconds. Assuming that each frame carries 1 Kbytes of data, what is the minimum number of bits you need for the sequence number? Assume that the maximum distance between any two nodes on a 1000BaseT network is 2500m. What is the minimum frame size required (in bytes) for this network to operate without problems? Assume speed of EM signal in copper is 2x108 m/sec and that in Fiber it is 2.5x108m/sec. [5 + 5 = 10]
