ENGLISH STANDARD QURAN

Sura 1: The Opening

In the name of Allah, the Exceedingly Kind, the Exceedingly Merciful.
1 2

All praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Universe. The Most Kind, the Most Merciful. 3 The Master of Judgement Day. 4 You alone do we worship, and You alone do we ask for help. 5 Guide us to the straight path. 6 The path of those whom You have bestowed your favours upon, not of those who have incurred Your wrath, nor of those who go astray.

Sura 2: The Cow

In the name of Allah, the Exceedingly Kind, the Exceedingly Merciful. Alif Lam Meem.1 That is the book, there is no doubt in it, it is a Guidance for the God-fearing. Those who believe in the unseen, and establish prayer, and spend out of what We have provided them with. And those who believe in what has been revealed to you and what was revealed before you and firmly believe in the hereafter. They are guided by their Lord, and it is these who are successful.

Sura 30: The Romans

In the name of Allah, the Exceedingly Kind, the Exceedingly Merciful. Alif Lam Meem.2 The Romans have been defeated In a neighboring land. But even after their defeat they will overcome. Within a few years. To Allah belongs the command, in the past and future. And on that day the believers will rejoice with the help Allah. He helps whom He wills, and He is the Mighty, the Merciful One. This is Allah's promise. And Allah does not forsake His promise, but most people do not know this. They know what is apparent in worldly life but they are heedless of the Hereafter. Do they not contemplate within themselves? Allah has not created the heavens and the earth and what is between them except for a purpose and for an appointed term. And yet many people deny the encounter with their Lord. Have they not traveled in the earth and observed their predecessors? They were mightier than them in strength. And they dug the earth and built on it more than what they have built. And their Messengers came to them with clear proofs. It was not Allah who wronged them, but they themselves were doing wrong. Then evil was the end of those who committed evil, for they denied the Signs of Allah and mocked them. Allah originates creation, then repeats it: then to Him you will return.
1 Mystical letters whose meaning is known only to Allah. 2 See n. 1 of S. 2.

Sura 36: Ya Seen

In the name of Allah, the Exceedingly Kind, the Exceedingly Merciful. Ya Seen.3 By the Wise Quran. Indeed you are one of the Messengers, On a straight path. A revelation from the Mighty, the Merciful One. That you may warn a people whose forefathers were not warned wherefore they are heedless. Certainly the pronouncement is merited by most of them, thus they do not believe. Indeed we have placed shackles around their necks up to their chins so their heads are kept raised. And We have placed a barrier before them and behind them and We have enveloped them so they cannot see. And it is the same to them whether you warn them or not: they will not believe. You can warn only him who

Sura 55: The Most Kind

In the name of Allah, the Exceedingly Kind, the Exceedingly Merciful. The Exceedingly Kind One! He taught the Qur'an. He created man. He taught him intelligent speech. The sun and the moon move to a precise calculation, And the trees and the stars both bow in adoration. And He raised the heaven and placed the balance, That you may not transgress it. And establish the weight justly and do not make the balance deficient. And He laid the Earth down for His creatures. Therein is fruit and palm-trees bearing sheathed clusters (of dates). And grain having husk and fragrant plants. So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny? He created man from clay like that of pottery. And He created the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire. So which of the favors of your Lord will you both4 deny? He is the Lord of the two easts and Lord of the two wests. So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny? He released the two converging seas, Between both of them is a barrier which they do not traverse. So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny? Out of them come pearls and coral, So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny? And His are the ships aloft on the sea like mountains. So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny?
3 See n. 1 of S. 2. 4 i.e. the jinn and men.

All that is on earth will perish, But will remain the Face of your Lord, the Owner of Majesty and Glory. So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny? Whoever is in the heavens and the earth entreats Him. Every day He attends to a matter. So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny? Soon We will attend to you, O you two burdens! So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny? O assembly of jinn and men! If you are able to pass through the regions of the heavens and earth, then pass. You cannot pass except by authority. So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny? Against you will be sent a flame of fire and smoke, and you will not be able to defend yourselves. So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny? When the heaven is split asunder and it becomes rose-colored like murky oil. So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny? Then on that Day neither man nor jinn will be asked about his crime. So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny? The criminals will be known by their marks and will be seized by the forelocks and the feet. So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny? This is Hell which the criminals deny. They will go around between its flames and scalding hot water. So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny? But for him who fears standing before his Lord are two gardens. So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny? Having branches. So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny? In both of them are two flowing springs. So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny? In each of them are pairs of every fruit. So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny? They will recline on couches whose inner linings are of brocade, and the fruit of both gardens will be within reach. So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny? In them will be maidens of modest gaze, whom no man or jinn has touched before. So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny? As if they were rubies and coral. So which of the favours of your Lord will you both deny? Can the reward for good be anything other than good? So which of the favours of your Lord will you both deny? And besides these two are two other gardens. So which the favours of your Lord will you both deny? Dark green. So which of the favours of your Lord will you both deny? In both of them are two springs gushing forth. So which of the favours of your Lord will you both deny? In both of them are fruits and date-palms and pomegranates. So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny? In them are good and beautiful maidens. So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny? Pure companions reserved in pavilions.

So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny? Whom no man or jinn has touched before. Reclining on green cushions and beautiful carpets. So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny? Blessed is the name of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Glory.

In the name of Allah, the Most Kind, the Most Merciful.
1 2

By the fig and the olive, And Mount Sinai, 3 And this city of security, 4 Verily We have created man in the best mould, 5 Then We reverted him to the lowest of the low, 6 Except those who believe and do righteous deeds, then for them is an endless reward. 7 What then, after this, causes you to deny the Judgment? 8 Is Allah not the Most Just of Judges?

By the steeds that run with heaving breath, Striking sparks of fire with their hooves, 3 Raiding at dawn, 4 Thereby raising clouds of dust, 5 Penetrating collectively into the centre of the enemy. 6 Indeed man is ungrateful to his Lord. 7 And indeed he is a witness to that. 8 And verily he is intense in his love of wealth. 9 Is he not aware of the Day when when the contents of the graves will be scattered, 10 And the secrets of the heart will be made apparent? 11 Verily their Lord is fully aware of them that Day.
