Elf Slippers

Sizes 3 to 8 years All sizing is approximate, so please measure your childs foot to ensure the best fit. Have your child place their foot on the shoe sole pattern and decide which size would fit yoru child. Remember to leave one inch around on all sides to account for your seam allowance and roominess of the slipper. Outside Cut 2 soles and a total of 4 shoe sides out of green felt. Then cut 2 soles and 4 shoe sides out of lining fabric (flannel). Begin with the outside of the shoe (green felt). Place two shoe sides right sides together and sew the heel and toe first with a 1/4 inch seam (refer to pattern to know which side is the heel and which is the toe). Ease your sole into the bottom of the shoe sides, so that the two sewn together shoe side pieces go all the way around the shoe sole. Line up the toe of the sole with yoru toe seam in the shoe side, and line up your heel with the heel seam of the shoe side. Pin into place and sew the shoe side pieces and the sole together using a 1/4 inch seam. Next sew the top of the shoe side piece (notice that the top is just the curved part on the top of the slipper, NOT the very top of the slipper where you will insert your foot). Repeat these steps with the other slipper. Turn right sides out and set aside. Lining Make your lining the same way you made the outside of your slippers, using instead the pieces you previously cut out of the flannel. The only difference is to leave a small opening (3 inches) in the bottom of each lining piece to be able to turn your slippers right side out when you are finished. DO NOT turn your lining pieces right side out at this time, leave them wrong side out for now. Insert your slipper outside (green felt, turned right side out) INTO your slipper lining (flannel, still wrong side out). Match up the seams of the two pieces and make sure the point of the toe is inside the other point of the toe. Now sew the two pieces together around the very top of the slipper (where you insert your foot). Do not sew the top of the slipper closed, instead sew around the hole creating an opening to insert your foot. Carefully pull your slipper outside piece through the hole in the lining. Both pieces should now be sewn together into one piece and they should both be right side out. Sew the small opening in the lining closed by hand. Insert the lining into the slipper. Take your 3 pompoms and sew those by hand to the curved top of your slipper. Warning: your slippers may be very slippery on smooth flooring, especially when excited little kids are running around on Christmas morning. To prevent slips and falls, I like to paint some tread onto the bottom of the slippers with a generous amount of puffy paint (that 3 dimensional paint you find at the craft store next to the T-shirts). This works great on slippery socks, too. Have a Merry Christmas!
