The Need for IP-Based Service Levels

PROBLEM
40% of companies delay launching new applications due to network performance concerns2 59% of companies simply add bandwidth to ensure application efficiency2 55% of companies only identify some of their network traffic2 Cost of application downtime and degradation is $13,000 per minute for an ERP application3
1

RESULT
Reduced business productivity Increased network costs Reduced understanding of network behavior Lowered network performance can be costly

IP SLA History
Used to be called RTR, renamed SAA in 12.0(5)T; we call it Engine 1. New Engine 2 is a major code rewrite introduced initially in 12.2(11)T, and now present in all 12.3 and later trains. Engine 2 is faster and consumes less memory. New CLI (Phase I) and enhanced trend accuracy for 12.3(14)T release: IP SLA, but using Engine 2+.

Cisco IP SLAs Provider: What Equant Says

Cisco IOS IP SLAs is an efficient way for Equant to

provide end-to-end reporting for each class of service. Not only does it enable round-trip delay measurement, but it also measures packet loss rate and jitter. For us, the fact that Cisco IOS IP SLAs is embedded in Cisco IOS Software and does not require any additional hardware to be deployed to support such features was a critical benefit.

14

Cisco IP SLAs Subscriber: What Dupont Says

Without a measurement tool like Cisco IP SLAs,

what do you base your networks measurements on? One big advantage is that IP SLAs is down at the hardware and Cisco IOS Software levels, measuring things. You dont have to put in other separate devices to measure the service quality.

Customer Deployment Example

Wachovia Corporation
Goal
Support convergence of data, voice and video Improve reliability of automated teller machine (ATM) network Retire aging protocols to reduce network deployment and management costs

Solution
Cisco 7206 VXR routers and Cisco 12000 Series routers Cisco Catalyst 6509 switches A mix of Cisco 1700, 2600, 2800, 3600, and 3700 series routers

Results
Transitioned from Systems Network Architecture (SNA), data link switching (DLS), and other protocols to IP Reduced ATM network-related outages by 50 percent Built architecture for successful convergence of data, voice, and video

The Cisco 7206 VXR routers fulfilled their initial purpose and have allowed us to now use them to take on new tasks. We left them right where they were connected, added new features, and implemented the IP SLA capability and VoIP gatekeeper features in Cisco IOS Software. It saved us millions of dollars in new deployments.

IP SLAs -- MPLS Health Monitor

Automatically create and delete IP SLAs LSP ping or LSP traceroute operations based on network topology Works on the MPLS L3 layer, under the IP layer. Discovers MPLS issues even when IP routing is working ok. Dramatically reduces troubleshooting time, and cost associated to maintenance of MPLS networks. Other PEs are discovered using BGP next-hop, and operations configured accordingly. Requires 12.2(27)SBC and later.
