Instructional Procedures
Prior to Instruction
Month 1 – Mind map- Get words associated with the words ‘short’ from pupils.
Jigsaw reading- sequences the jumbled up strips of paragraphs.
Jigsaw picture- arranges the cut out pictures.
Cursive writing – copy their favourite paragraph in cursive writing.
Language games- form small words from a big word.
Dictogloss- write a paragraph after listening to the teacher’s third reading.
Hot seat – A pupil takes over the character and he answers the questions asked
by
his friends from the point of the character
Group activities – surveys, categorizing
Finish dealing with helping students to understand the content of the book.

Month 2 – Beginning of extension activities:


ABC Book- get words from the story and form books according to their
creativity (
concertina)
Role-play dialogues – prepared a short dialogue and role-play it.
Speech bubbles – prepared a bubbles and the pupils will write the dialogues in
it.
Reader’s Respond- the pupils draw the cover of the story according to their own
perception.
Character’s quilt- Pupils draw pictures of the characters on the mahjong paper.
Parallel writing- Pupils write by replacing certain words in the paragraph.
Song- The pupils compose lyrics about the story using rhyme tune.

Month 3 – Start to prepare for skit.


Skits ( a simple script)- pupils memorized and act out the script .
Reader’s respond – Pupils write letter to Shorty expressing their sympathy.
Face masks – Pupils draw the face of the characters.
Making puppets - making puppets using paper bags. (role-play)
Miming – mime and guess.
ABC Book- get words from the story and form books according to their

Tongue twister- Pupils search for words start from ‘s’ and arrange it to form a
sentence.
News at 9 – selected pupils take the role of a newscaster and talk about shorty.
Button effect – Identifying the cause and effect in a sentence using different
coloured button.
Jazz chant- Pupils create a chant based on the story.
Extension Activity – ABC book
