Oil Based Overprinting Varnish: This is the most long-glazing, the earliest use of natural resins such as Copal, resin, etc. dissolved in solvent, then one uses PVC resin, acrylic resin used again until now. The main feature is fast drying, good water resistance, high gloss. The disadvantage is that solvent pollution, flammable, paper recycling is not easy. Only can be use off line. as under according can be divided into different levels of demand for gloss, matt, Blister varnish and rub resistance. Oil Based Overprinting varnish for blister packing: This product is the oldest product, PVC is the main component of the earliest, and later changed to Acrylic Based composition has its drawback is that solvent pollution, flammable, the advantage of drying quickly and easily to operation, evaluation of the merits of varnish is the pressure speed of light speed, flatness after calendering, gloss, ease away from the Stainless Steel plate, Can be keep the gloss long time and wear and so on. UV Scrub Coating: UV Scrub Coating is one type of UV curing resin, its viscosity is high, almost no flow, It's must be using for the silk screen plate of the glue hardened by UV irradiation, its surface like the grainy as sand can be rough to fine, It's can be make almost highly artistic style on the paper technology. @ Ink duct UV varnish The ink duct UV varnish is one of curing resin, its high viscosity, will flow, applied to offset printing machines or printing ink is generally used as label's over surface.

Water-Based Over-Print Varnishes

An over-print varnish is a type of varnish that is applied to material or sheet that has already been printed. Over-print varnishes are used to create a gloss finish, resist stains, scuff resistance, colour enhancement. There are three main types of over print varnishes used in the printing industry including radiation curable over-print varnishes (also called UV curable varnish), oil based over-print varnishes and water-based over-print varnishes. Water-based over-print varnishes are often referred to as an "aqueous coating". This particular type of varnish has a styrenic or acrylic binding system. A clearer and enhanced look and finish is acquired when a water-based over-print varnish is used. Water-based varnishes require heat in order to dry properly, so most printing companies make use of hot air ovens or infrared heaters. If a low temperature is used and there is a maximum air flow created, you can expect the final result of your image and over-print varnish to be flawless. Water-based over-print varnishes are often preferred types of varnish by companies that want to reduce their carbon footprint as they are friendlier to the environment. This is due to the fact that water-based varnishes have fewer toxins than other varnishes. Over-print varnishes are used by many companies to make a logo stand out and are sometimes even used to coat a page in entirety to achieve a professional and glossy appearance. Knowing which type of over-print varnish to use is the task of a professional printing team. If you are looking to add something special to a printed document or are looking for a glossy professional look and feel to a catalogue, brochure or business document then chat to the friendly consultants about the various types of over-print varnishes available to achieve this. Over-Print Varnishes
Over-print varnishes are a type of varnish that is applied to a page over a particular printed area. The varnish can be tinted or clear and provides a top quality glossy, satin or even a matt finish. The overprint varnish can be applied as spot varnish (just over particular parts of printed areas for special effects) or as an overall coating on a printed area (this is when the entire page is coated with the varnish). New Africa Inks provides a variety of over-print varnishes in the form of:

Solvent based varnish this type of varnish requires some time to dry. Once the solvent based varnish is applied to the printed area, it needs to lie untouched until the solvent in the varnish has evaporated. This is still the most commonly used over-print varnish. Water based varnish this type of varnish has a major advantage over other types of regular varnish. It dries fairly quickly and can easily be cleaned up with water. Water based varnish is more environmentally friendly than other varnishes as it contains considerably less toxins. This is becoming an increasingly popular option for finishing.

UV curable varnish this type of varnishing is environmentally friendly as it contains no volatile organic compounds.. It is applied to parts of a printed area or the entire printed area to make it stand out. The varnish is extremely fast drying as it is assisted by an ultra violet light. This type of overprint varnish is used for high gloss finishes.

Over-print varnishes are used to make a company logo stand out and can even be used to coat an entire page, in order to give it that professional glossy finish. It is important that you chat to a consultant at New Africa Inks about which type of over print varnishing would be ideal for your particular print job. Take the time to contact New Africa Inks and find out how they can assist you with your overprint varnish and printing tasks today. You will find that they have a wide variety of printing inks and varnishes to offer you.

Print Coatings: Varnish, Aqueous, Lamination, & UV

The two most common reasons for adding a coating over your folders are for protection and aesthetic reasons. Coatings are applied to protect printed folders from exposure to moisture, extreme temperatures, scuffs, scratches and frequent handling. They are also applied to draw the eyes to particular elements; to add depth and interest to your printed piece. Four different print coatings are used in commercial sheetfed printing: overprint varnish, aqueous coating, lamination and UV coating (ultraviolet). All four are available in matte, dull or satin, and gloss formulations. Note that coatings perform differently on uncoated paper stock versus coated paper stock. Overprint Varnish Applying varnish is an inexpensive way to add gloss to your printed pocket folders. Although not as hard as other coatings, varnish does offer some protection; mainly resistance to dirt, smearing and water. Varnish can be applied two ways; overprint/flood (applied over entire printed surface for protection) or spot/pattern (applied to select elements for emphasis). Varnish can also be color tinted. Gloss varnish reflects more light and adds to the sharpness and saturation of images while matte or dull varnish increases readability by diffusing light and reducing glare. This economical folder finish provides a mild shine and protection but can yellow paper over time. Aqueous Coating

Aqueous coatings are fast-drying, water-based, protective sealants particularly resistant to smudges and fingerprints. Aqueous formulations afford greater protection than varnish and have gloss characteristics that fall between varnish and UV coatings. A high gloss finish has less rub resistance and conversely, greater rub resistance reduces the degree of gloss. They are not water/liquid resistant because the cured coating does inhibit complete drying of the inks on the folder. Advantage of aqueous coating over conventional varnish:

Higher gloss Better clarity Faster drying Will not yellow with age Higher abrasion Higher rub resistance Environmentally friendly (water-based) Glossier finish on lesser grade papers

Laminate Laminates come in two types, film-based and liquid-based. Either a clear plastic film is laid down over the sheet of paper or a clear liquid is spread over the sheet and dries (or cures) like a varnish. Laminates protect the sheet from water, are slow to apply and costly; but provide a strong, washable surface. Film lamination features high gloss with a very smooth, tough finish. This durable plastic film has advantages over liquid coating at a slightly higher cost. Film lamination will not yellow with age, flake off, and is scratch resistant. In addition, the ink is protected from cracking and provides an odorless/wipeable surface. UV Coating UV coating is a liquid based, protective coating which is applied and cured by ultraviolet lamps leaving an extremely high gloss hard finish that is chemical and abrasion resistant. UV coatings are solvent free and emit no VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Drying is instantaneous with exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Spot cover, raised effects and a very heavy coating for extra shine and protection are possible. Advantage of UV coating over other coating methods:

Highest gloss Better clarity Higher abrasion Higher rub resistance

Printing must be done with UV inks or inks that do not contain micro crystalline wax (also called wax-free). Pigments must be heat and chemical resistant. If nonresistant colors are used, the color may fade, change or bleed into unprinted areas. It is more difficult to recycle than the other coatings and this thick coating may crack when scored or folded. Other Considerations Typically UV coatings and film lamination, often available from outside vendors, require additional time for drying of ink before coating and curing after coating. Typically aqueous and overprint varnish, often handled within the plant, do not require any extra lead time.

Varnishing
A range of coatings to give your printing a wow! factor Want to really make your printing grab your audiences attention? Including varnishing can: Create a great first impression about you Instantly raise the interest level of the recipient Add to the drama and punch of your message Increases the perceived value of your product Make your printing more likely to be read and kept!

What is Varnishing?

A varnish is a liquid coating applied to a printed surface (for example the outside of a presentation folder) to add a clear glossy, matte, satin, or neutral finish. Varnishing, also referred to as Coating or Sealing, can be carried out online (the varnish is applied directly (within seconds) after the ink is put on the paper), or offline by a separate machine, some time after printing. There are various kinds of varnish that can be applied to printing, but all share some common characteristics:
y y y

A varnish increases colour absorption and speeds up the drying process. By 'locking in' in the ink under a protective coat, the varnish helps to prevebt the ink rubbing off when the paper is subjected to handling. Varnishes are used most frequently, and succesfully on coated papers.

These are the major types of varnishing available:

Gloss Varnishing

A gloss varnish is often used to enhance the appearance of printed photographs in brochures or flyers, as the coating reflects back the light and makes colours appear richer and more vivid. A gloss coating can add impact to your print, especially in sales or promotional material, where optimum presentation of images is paramount.
Matte Varnishing

A matte (or matt - the spellings are interchangeable) varnish gives the printed surface a nonglossy, smooth look. This type of seal is sometimes considered to soften the appearance of a printed image. Small text in a leaflet or booklet is easier to read on a surface coated with matt vanish as the coating scatters the light, reducing glare.
Silk / Satin Varnishing

Naturally enough, this coating represents the middle ground between the two above, being neither as glossy as a true gloss, nor as subtle as a matt.
Machine Sealing

A machine seal is a basic, and virtually invisible coating applied to a printed item by the printer. It does not affect the appearance of the job, but as it seals the ink under a protective coat, the printer need not wait so long for the job to be dry enough to handle. It is often used when producing fast turnaround printing such as leaflets on matt and satin (silk) papers, as inks dry more slowly on these materials.
UV Varnishing

Ultra Violet (UV) Varnishing is a process for achieving an even more striking type of coating on your printed material. Requiring the use of special Ultraviolet drying machinery, a UV coating is like a deluxe version of the non-UV varnishes, with the varnish appearing noticeably richer and more luxurious. A UV varnish can be applied as either an all-over coating, or as a spot varnish:
All-over UV varnish

Simply put, this is a UV seal applied all over the printed surface. A gloss UV varnish seal is the most common type of all-over UV varnish, (perhaps because this finish really does give a very high gloss effect, more so than with a laminate in many cases) although silk and matt are also available.
Spot UV Varnish

As the name suggests, a Spot Varnish is applied to chosen spots (areas), of a printed piece. This has the affect of highlighting and drawing attention to that part of the design, but it also

provides the additional visual stimulus of having varied textures on a single printed surface. This adds a lot of interest, and can identify the printing as a premium piece of literature in the perception of the reader. One very effective technique is to apply a UV gloss spot varnish on top of matt laminated printing. This achieves maximum contrast between the highly reflective shiny UV coating and the light-absorbing matt laminate, and can, for instance, create a striking first impression on presentation folders or a brochure cover.
Textured Spot UV Varnish

In four finishes: Sandpaper, Leather, Crocodile Skin and Raised A textured spot UV varnish allows the creative designer not only to surprise the recipient of the printing with a mix of textures on the same printed surface, but also to reinforce the tactile properties of the product he or she is depicting. For example, a manufacturer of ornamental glassware could use a raised effect gloss UV varnish to give a highly reflective, 3-dimensional portrayal of a featured piece of glass work, or an interior design company could use a combination of leather, sandpaper or crocodile skin varnishes to highlight some of the different textures the company works with.
