EXTERIOR STYLE

The rake of the windscreen eliminates any interruption in the lines between the bonnet and passenger compartment. The sloping windscreen contributes to balancing the volumes, and is aesthetically modern. The front panel has a vast air intake, with elongated headlight units.

The windscreen is non-heat reflective and its surface area is 1.4 m excluding the blacked out part. Its forward angle requires the use of an innovative wiper technology, of the clap-hands type.

The depth of the "Ruby" bulb type headlights is part of the modern design.

The saloon rear screen is tinted, that of the 407SW and its side quarters are dark-tinted.

The rear screen opens on all 407SW's, facilitating access to the boot. When the front wipers are working, the hatch wiper may be activated automatically if reverse gear is engaged. This wiper is inhibited if the rear screen is open.

MECHANICALS / GEARBOXES, CLUTCHES

GEARBOXES All types of gearbox are cable operated. PETROL ENGINES BOXES EW7J4 BE4/5 EW10J4 BE4/5 or AL4 EW12J4 ML6C or 4HP20 ES9A AM6 DIESEL DV6TED4 BE4/5 DW10BTED4 ML6C ou 4HP20

ML6C manual gearbox: Based on the ML5C manual gearbox, this box has 6 forward gears and a synchromeshed reverse gear. It is suitable for all high-torque engines (up to 330 Nm). AM6 automatic gearbox: This new automatic gearbox is used with the ES9A engine. Manufactured by the Japanese supplier AISIN AW, this box has 6 forward gears, is transverse, active and intelligent, and the maximum permitted torque is 450 Nm.

The ECU is fixed to the gearbox and incorporates the multi-function switch.

CLUTCH All of the clutches are of the hydraulic type. Special function: On the DW10 BTED4 diesel engine fitted with the ML6C gearbox, an automatic clutch wear adjustment system called the "SAC" (name patented by LUK) has been introduced: - the automatic wear compensation system is based on a load sensor, - the thrust bearing load curve profile remains practically unchanged over time, - this system makes for a much higher available degree of wear than with a conventional clutch.

407
MECHANICALS / RUNNING GEAR

The 407 is fitted with new double wishbone running gear. It is the reference in road-holding in the M2 segment. A wide use of aluminium and the "Alu Cobapress" process has overcome the handicap of weight, as a result of the use of this leading edge technology. The "Alu Cobapress" process is a compromise between forging and moulding, combining pressure casting, aluminium gravitation, pressing and guarantees excellent mechanical strength.

THE FRONT SUSPENSION: VH 10 The front suspension is of the "separate pivot, double wishbone type" Composition of the suspension.

407
MECHANICALS / RUNNING GEAR

This architecture enables independent control of: - wheel turning guidance, - vertical damping, When turning the wheels, the suspension components are not subjected to a rotational load. The advantages are: - reduction in the pivot angle (8 instead of 15), - reduction in ground offset angle (filters road bumps), - independent of the suspension load, - maintenance of a constant negative camber angle whatever the wheel travel (cornering precision). Pivot link special features The pivot is fixed to the radius arm by: - a balljoint at the top, - a bearing at the bottom, which is called the Pivot Internal Balljoint Function. These two mounting devices provide the rotation function. Long subframe The long subframe is composed of a subframe (A) to which the following have been added: - a front aluminium frame (B) composed of two extensions, two crumple zones and a front crossmember, - a pedestrian impact beam (C) fitted with two buffers.

Its function is to absorb the loads in case of frontal impact.

The shock absorbers and the springs are fixed to the rear suspension at an angle, which optimises boot width.

SUSPENSION There are two types of suspension available on the 407, depending on the version: - standard suspension which uses the multi-valve technology, - electronic suspension (an suspension system ECU controls each shock absorber separately) Comfort and safety are optimised by improved management of the bodyshell movements (bounce, front and rear dip, roll) on the basis of the body height and movement information, measured wheel by wheel and by driver input (steering angle, braking, acceleration or deceleration). Special feature of the Suspension System ECU This also manages the steering control valve.

FRONT BRAKES (mm) Diameter: 283 Thickness: 26 Diameter: 330 Thickness: 30

REAR BRAKES (mm)

Diameter: 290 Thickness: 12

The ESP*, ABS*, REF*, AFU* systems are fitted standard to all types and also include the CBC* function.

CBC corner braking control. This new function is additional to EBD. This system also enables separate management of braking through a corner of the right and left wheels when ABS or ESP is not activated. It also provides for improved braking efficiency and improved vehicle stability. ESP control when not braking Manufactured by TRW, the ESP uses two new control logics: - understeer control logic*: Understeer correction is now implemented on three wheels (front wheels and corner inside rear wheel) which brings the vehicle back on course more quickly. - oversteer control logics*: a. pre-control: This is a first level of control used to stabilise the vehicle and is imperceptible for the driver. This also reduces system reaction time when it cuts in. b. adaptability: The ESP detects sporty driving or avoidance manoeuvres at high speed. In these situations, a slightly retarded implementation provides vehicle agility.
