VISITATION
But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: and if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. I Cor. 15:13-14 Jesus was not the first person to rise from the dead. Depending on how you handle the reappearance of Samuel (I Sam. 28:720), that is, whether or not you count it as a true resurrection, Jesus was either the seventh or the eighth person to rise. While this still makes rising from the dead a very uncommon event, it is not unique to our Lord. How, then, is Jesus different? In addition to Samuels startling appearance before the woman with the familiar spirit at Endor, the Old Testament records that the prophet Elijah raised a widows son at Zarephath (I Kings 17:1724); Elisha raised a Shunammite womans son (II Kings 4:18-37); and a dead man whose body touched Elishas bones was revived (II Kings 13:21). In the New Testament, the Lord Himself raised Jairus daughter (Matt. 9:18-26; Mark 5:22-43; Luke 8:41-56), a widows son at Nain (Luke 7:11-15), and His friend Lazarus (John 11:1-46). Yet the apostle Paul refers

to Jesus as the firstborn of the dead (Col. 1:18) and the firstfruits of them that slept [i.e., were dead] (I Cor. 15:20). How is this so? Clearly there are differences, and they figure vitally. All of those who died and were raised prior to Jesus (not to mention those who, like Dorcas, were raised after His earthly life) had to die again. None of them remained alive forever. Some have speculated, in fact, that one reason Jesus wept at Lazarus grave is that He knew Lazarus would be risking his salvation by returning to fleshly life, where sin always lies in wait. In addition, all others who rose from the dead did so only through the agency of another: they had to have help. Jesus did not die again. He lives today, reigning as King. Nor did He need anyone elses help to be resurrected. He did it Himself. Thus, Pauls descriptions are accurate. Jesus is unique. He is our Lord because He lived a life without sin (Heb. 4:15) and was the first truly to triumph over death. He is truly the firstborn of the dead. He richly deserves to be honored as Lord of our lives.
