concepts are central to the OSI model; (1)Services (2)Interfaces (3)Protocols Probably the biggest contribution of OSI is to make

the distinction between these 3 concepts explicit. Each layer performs some services for the layer above it.The protocols in OSI are much hidden than TCP/IP and can be replaced relatively easily as the technology changes. OSI was devised before the protocols were invented. This ordering meant that the model was not biased towards 1 particular set of protocol. DOWNSIDE: (1)designers did not have much experience with the subject and did not have a good idea of which functionality to put in each layer. (2)OSI supports both connectionless and connection-oriented communication in the network layer, but only connection-oriented in the transport layer MAIN DISADVANTAGES OF OSI: (1)BAD TIMING:It now appears that the standard OSI protocols got crushed. (2)BAD TECHNOLOGY:Both the model and the protocols are flawed. The session layer has little use in most applications, and the presentation layer is nearly empty. The data link and network layers are so full that the subsequent work has them split into multiple sublayers, each with different functions. OSI,along with its associated service definitions and protocols are extraordinarily comlex.Functions like addressing, flow control, error control reappear again and again in each layer. Another issue is the decision to place certain features in particular layers in not always obvious. The virtual terminal handling(now in the application layer)was earlier in the presentation layer.Data security,encryption,n/w management was omitted. The most serious critisism is that the model is dominated by a communication mentality. (3)BAD IMPLEMENTATIONS:Given the enormous comlexity of the model and the protocols,it will come as no surprise that the initial implemetations were huge, unweildly and slow.Even though the products got better in course of time, the bad image stuck.

1.The OSI model originally distinguishes between service, interval and protocols. 1.The TCP/IP model doesnt clearly distinguish between service, interval and protocol. 2.The OSI model is a reference model. 2.The TCP/IP model is an implementation of the OSI model. 3.In OSI model, the protocols came after the model was described. 3.In TCP/TP model, the protocols came first, and the model was really just a description of the existing protocols.

4.In OSI model, the protocols are better hidden. 4.In TCP/IP model ,the protocols are not hidden. 5.The OSI model has 7 layers. The TCP/IP model has only 4 layers. 6.The OSI model supports both connectionless and connection-oriented communication in the network layer, but only connection -oriented communication in transport layer. 6.The TCP/IP model supports both connectionless and connection-oriented communication in the transport layer.,giving users the choice.
