CASE STUDY REPORT

PRAVEEN KUMAR B-ARCH III YEAR EN. NO. 051018

DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE AND PLANNING

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

INTRODUCTION
Housing is a concept of living community and dwelling for the habitants . Our project is to establish a housing community at the dehradun site for the government employees . Site is a bit of sloppy one with a gradual slope of 1: 18 . The hilly climate and cold weather at doon gives us lots of opportunity for a good design . The views at the NW side of the site enhances the living standards. Thanks to the very unique site conditions and its topography , which gives me the opportunity for a sustainable design . Total site area is 45000 sq. m. and we will like to utilize 33% of it . The site has great opportunity for a rain water harvesting concept and the courtyard planning for the common spaces .

CASE STUDY 2
OLYMPIC VILLAGE- PARIS

Building Type : Public Buildings Year : 2000

THE CLUSTERING PATTERN

They have designed the Olympic housing in a series of clusters around a variety of courtyards in the French tradition of outdoor living. This would promote athletes to mingle with each other and foster friendship between young people of different nations and continents.

THE CLUSTERING PATTERN

The height of building very from four to six stories and it would enclose courtyard of different scales. The proportion of courtyard in St. Germain-de-pres (e.g. place de Fustemburg) or Le Marais forms the of basis of place making for athletes housing. The larger courtyard can be used for ceremonial purposes or play areas. The smaller courtyard would be utilized for social gatherings by athletes.

Fusing the large courtyard of housing with canals is an important feature of design. These courtyards are built around the canal making the water an integral feature of Olympic housing.

WATER AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE COURTYARDS

In fact we envisage a series of bridges containing student housing to span over the canal and connect it to a number of restaurants, outdoor cafes and recreational rooms on the outer end of the canal. Passages across the bridge would have viewing balconies towards the canal.

CASE STUDY 3
CIDCO HOUSING ,NEW MUMBAI

Building Type : Housing Year : 1983

CLUSTER : The form of the tenement block is based on enhancing the courtyard and roof terraces of the individual building and creating community spaces itself .

CIDCO Housing built in New Bombay in 1998 faces the challenge of providing low cost housing for approximately 1000 units in Bombay. Proliferation of slums in Indian cities is a common feature.

Diffirent other type of clustering pattern , to enhance the open and semi open space layout

Most of the tenements built in this complex are of one or two rooms. Creation of a humane habitation for very large numbers at the minimum cost was an exceptionally difficult problem.

Building for large numbers is like writing a long novel. War and peace can be read through from the beginning to end with its different chapters and sub-plots sustaining interest. Similarly, the Mahabharta is a string of stories woven into the fabric of one major composition. The challenge of mass housing, likewise, can be either approached like one long story or as a series of interconnected episodes. Instead of building large monolithic parallel blocks of grim dimensions, we opted for a different kind of settlement pattern.

The design for the large number of dwelling units is fragmented into smaller aggregations enclosing a variety of spaces, which can be cohesively arranged on the sloping site of a hillock and strung together with pedestrian pathways.

INFERENCES :
Use of the topography of the land in the sustainable design. Use of the pergolas and courtyard to enhance the microclimate . Use of the rain water harvesting concept in the design process. Use of the slope of the land in the unit design. Use proper orientation of the units to enhance the sun and wind conditions. Use of proper road network in the design to allow smooth access to the all parts of the site. Use 7-15 m offsets all around the site. Try to avoid the hot sun and cold winds in their respective climatic conditions. Provide proper services conditions all around the site . Provide proper sewage and drainage systems in the site. Provide proper parking and vehicular conditions to the site .
