GOH uniforms enroute to Africa

To donate Gate of Heaven School uniforms for the Teach Peace program, contact Rockensies at 406-4533 or via e-mail at krock@epix.net. For more information about Teach Peace, visit www.teachpeace.com.

While the Gate of Heaven School may just be a memory, uniforms from the Catholic elementary school will live on and clothe children about 4,700 miles away. Parents of former Gate of Heaven students have begun collecting uniforms to send to children in West Africa through a non-profit organization called the Teach Peace Foundation which, according to its website, aims to transform from a world based on greed to a world based on kindness. Susan Diana, of Lehman, led the cause as a former homeroom parent for Gate of Heaven School. When it was mentioned to her that donating the uniforms would be a great idea, Diana contacted the Rev. James Paisley of St. Thereses Church to see if there was a possibility to bring the idea to fruition. He said he had two contacts but they were out of the country at the time, she said. Despite the lag time in organizing the shipment, Diana began to spread the word about the collection and parents responded. Diana announced via e-mail that her minivan would be parked in the Gate of Heaven School parking lot on certain days. Parents drove to the site, clutching green and yellow plaid uniforms. Diana even found two garbage bags filled with uniforms before she parked her van. Many parents said it was difficult to let go of the memorabilia, but were happy to donate the items to a good cause. We did keep one piece because were going to have it made into one of those Teddy Bears, said parent Deanna Mennig, of Dallas, who feels good about helping others in need, despite losing an iconic memento from the school

which closed this summer. We kept some basketball hoodies, she said. Kevin Rockensies, executive director of Teach Peace, said the uniforms will be a muchappreciated necessity for children attending school in Liberia, Africa. It will mean the world to them some will use them for school because each school (there) has a uniform, but even if they are not used for school they are used for regular clothing, said Rockensies. A lot of times Ill go over there and the children are wearing rags and torn shirts. Between the heat and conditions there, things do get dried out. It will definitely mean a lot. Rockensies, of Dallas, has been helping children in West Africa for about 12 years, having first become involved with Teach Peace after working with Sr. Mary Sponsa Beltran, of Ashley, in the Our Lady of Fatima Rehabilitation Center in Liberia helping povertystricken disabled children. The rehab center is now part of the Teach Peace Foundations Special Ambassadors program. Money will be raised to ship the materials to Africa but if enough money is not raised before the end of the year, Rockensies will take some of the uniforms with him on one of his bi-annual trips to West Africa. Im very thankful Fr. Paisley contacted me about the uniforms, he said. Its not often we get calls like that. We usually get monetary donations, but its good to have donations like this because it really helps these kids.

Many residents in Dallas Borough and Dallas Township have recently been instructed to change their addresses as part of a project instituted by Luzerne County 911. Some residents are frustrated by the change, but emergency officials say the project is all in the name of public safety. Since the 1998 inception of 911 in Luzerne County, tens of thousands of addresses have changed to become part of a national standard, according to Fred Rosencrans, 911 Data/Technical Support Manager. The idea behind the readdressing project is for fire, ambulance and emergency medical services responders to be able to clearly find a caller in the event of an emergency. The project is now underway in Dallas Borough and Dallas Township, and Rosencrans said the entire process should be complete in about five months after

If a letter doesnt get delivered, its not a big deal, but if we dont respond, we get sued or someone could die. This minor inconvenience is worth a lifetime of safety.

data analysis is completed in Kingston Township and Bear Creek Township. Residents received letters about the change on June 30 and have been urged to make the address changes immediately. Rosencrans said post offices will deliver mail to both new and old addresses for up to a year, and local fire companies have copies of new and old addresses to ensure an accurate response to emergencies. Rosencrans said out of about 3,500 addresses in the Dallas area, 50 have lodged complaints with 911. Dallas Borough Manager Tracey Carr said shes also received a few complaints out of the hundreds of addresses changed within the borough. Jennie Congleton, a Dallas

Borough resident, said shes frustrated with the change because it seems like an illogical measure. She said the numbers on her street have become disjointed rather than consecutive, causing confusion among her neighbors. It goes from 1, 2, 3, 4 all the way to 11, she said. Now the houses are 15, 49, 45, 16, 19, 11, and the other side is 52 and 28 we dont consider this safe. Carr said Congletons street is a primary example of why the See 911, Page 10 readdressing needed to be done. Her street started at 100, and then went to 1 and the house next to hers was 2, said Carr. That was a case of odds and evens being on the same side. Carr said the borough is working from the recommendations of Luzerne County 911. She said

she knows what residents are dealing with her own address has changed three times since the project started. But she believes the changes are for the right reasons. That bit of inconvenience is certainly outweighed if an ambulance or police car can get to you or your neighbors quicker, she said. Its worth it. Rosencrans, who also works for the Dallas Township police department, said the project means phasing out the old rural route system and driveways with two or more houses or in excess of 1,000 feet must have a street sign posted. He said houses are renumbered according to the Frontage interval addressing sys-

HARVEYS LAKE BOROUGH

Preliminary residential plan for condos is approved

By EILEEN GODIN Dallas Post Correspondent

Harveys Lake Borough Council gave its approval on a preliminary residential plan and four waivers for the Villas at Waterwood, a proposed development of 117 condominium units to be located on 33 acres of the former Hansons Amusement Park. Developers Ken Williams, Matthew Deprimo and Attorney Angelo Terrana have been working with the borough engineer and the

Planning Commission to whittle away 61 conditions council members implemented last November, said council president Francis Kopko. Terrana said, of the 61 conditions, the developers have a list of 12 they have been working on. Some of them (of the 12) have been satisfied, but we left them on the list, he said. So even though it shows 12, in reality there are six or seven. We did not have time to prepare the paperwork to back them up. Terrana requested four waivers

from the council on aspects like using a more decorative but functional fencing around the proposed retention basin. According to the borough zoning laws, an 8 ft. chain-linked fence is required. Terrana requested,

since the retention basin is near the front of the property, that council allow the developers to use a wooden fencing which would blend into the landscaping but still prevent children and small animals from entering the area.

A retention basin is an area where excess storm water would be stored until it can be absorbed into the ground. The second waiver involves an access roadway which was developed from the end of Grandview Avenue through the property and exiting onto Lakeside Drive. Terrana said the road is not an easement but an interior roadway constructed by a resident from Grandview Avenue. Grandview Avenue dead ends about 20 feet above our site, he said.

The third waiver was to bypass a required Army Corp. study on the wetlands area. Terrana told the council it could take six months to a year to get someone to do that study and explained the wetland area is a small area in the back of the site which empties into a nearby creek. Williams added there are no planstobuildanythinginthatarea. The fourth waiver was to dismiss contour lines measuring from the center of the road to the curb.

Classroom named after Farrell

Lorraine Farrell Speaking about her late husband

The Lake-Lehman School Board dedicated an elementary classroom at a meeting Monday in memory of a school board member who died earlier this year. Superintendent James McGovern read a declaration, naming the Lehman-Jackson Elementary School autism classroom the Farrell Learning Center in memory of the late board member, John Peter Farrell, who died in a car accident in April. Lorraine Farrell, who replaced her husband on the board after his passing, said he would be honored and humbled by the dedication. He put his heart and soul into education, she said. Board President Mark Kornoski said Farrell, whose son is autistic, was a big supporter of special education, and the board felt his dedication deserved recognition. The late board member will also have a scholarship offered in his memory from the Lake-Lehman Foundation next year. The board hired Michael Non-

nenburg, of Scranton, as the new secondary industrial technology teacher with a salary of $41,841. Nonnenburg taught at the district as a long-term substitute last year after the retirement of Daniel Williams. This is the Scranton High School and Millerville University graduates first professional teaching assignment. The board also appointed the following employees for the 201112 school year: Valerie Williams as district substitute caller with a stipend of $3,500; John McDonald as in-school suspension monitor at a rate of $13.55 per hour, 71/2 hours per day,181days per year; Jeffrey Shook as school and community resource officer at a rate of $15.15 per hour; and Molly Company as part-time teacher associate at a rate of $10.30 per hour, five hours per day, 181 days per year. The board approved the fur-

lough of Christine Sakoski, elementary library aide, effective June 13 due to elimination of the position. The position was cut due to the curtailment of certain programs on both the secondary and elementary levels during the district budgeting process. Johnna Evans, of the Lake Lehman Foundation, told the board the July 15 golf tournament fundraiser was successful and said plans are underway for the Battle of the Bands to be held on July 30. She said she would report the earnings of the golf tournament at the next school board meeting. Evans reported the foundation was able to send three high school and three elementary school students to various summer camps at Misericordia University due to a partnership formed with the school. Solicitor, gas company are at standstill

By SARAH HITE shite@mydallaspost.com

A fire and explosives risk analysis expert who testified at a Dallas Township zoning hearing Wednesday told the board and public if a natural gas leak occurred at a proposed metering station to be built by Chief Gathering LLC, there would be no effect on the neighboring Dallas School District or church. Ali Reza, vice president and principal engineer of Exponent Engineering and Scientific Consulting based in Menlo Park, Calif., was retained by Chief several months ago and instructed to

provide information about the risk of failure of its proposed metering station and the potential effects on the four Dallas schools and the Fellowship Free Evangelical Church on Hildebrandt Road. He said his company has a $60,000 contract with Chief to perform the task. Reza said the school building closest to the metering facility would be the middle school at 1,461 feet, and the church is 923

feet away from the structure. If the largest possible gas leak were to occur, Reza said the extent of the flammable cloud an area where the gas concentration was appropriate for ignition would extend to 330 feet in one calculation and 567 feet in another, rendering the school and church unharmed. Explaining that natural gas is

The Dallas Township solicitor announced Tuesday he was unable to reach an agreement with Williams Field Services, LLC on zoning and land development issues related to the companys proposed pipeline construction within the township. Negotiations have been ongoing since June. Solicitor Thomas Brennan said the township was trying to work out an

agreement with Williams requirements for zoning and land development, in conjunction with the companys 33 mile Springville Gathering Line, which would tap into the Transco interstate pipeline located off Hildebrandt Road near the Dallas School District campus. The two parties also tried to reach an agreement for the companys proposed metering station, which originally would have been located on a property about 1,800 feet from the four Dallas schools. At past meetings, Brennan said negotiations

would have moved more controversial parts of the metering site, including two 3,000-gallon underground tanks of the flammable odorant mercaptan, to another site further away from the township. Williams received preliminary approval from the Wyoming County Planning Commission last month for construction of a metering facility on about 5 acres of land off Schoolhouse Road in Northmoreland Township. Officials said the site

HARPIN ON THINGS

Hang on a minute, honey! Im on my way to save the day for you

My phone rang the other day, well actually, one of the custom ringtones which has been downloaded (or is it uploaded?) to the Blueberry thing I now carry announced a call from the Mrs. And, saluting first, I pressed the button to be connected. The Mrs., out of breath and sputtering parts of sentences faster than these hearing-impaired ears could deciphHeffernan er, was saying something about birds, shovels and being upset. Understand that the ringtone has been a great source of conversation and laughter when Im standing in line with a bunch of guys at the food store who were all called to pick up something for dinner. For those of us who remember the television show Lost in Space, jog your memory and replay in your head the voice that came out of the robot that always was with Will Robinson. There is a siren going off in the background and the voice is saying, WARNING! WARNING! ITS THE WIFE. ITS THE WIFE! First comes a look of bewilderment as everyone around me looks for the source of the siren then immediate laughter, except from the woman in the next aisle whos giving me the look, and guys reaching for their phones asking if I can send it to them. I got it from Joey Y. who got it from Mike P. and I cant count the number of times it has been forwarded. Slowly dear, I say into the phone. Remember, I cant understand you when you talk that fast plus I am vertically challenged. Silence for a second or two and then laughter comes from the phone. What does being short have to do with your hearing? she asks. Absolutely nothing, but I knew you would pick up on it and then downshift to third gear so I could catch up on the 87 words you said in seven seconds, I respond, asking the reason for the phone call. I looked into the flower pot on the porch to check on the wrens nest before watering and six of the babies jumped out and are running around the porch, she said. Will the mother bird, which is dive bombing my head, pick them up and put them back? I tried to get them with a shovel but they are too quick. Quickly racking my brain about how much weight a bird can lift, all I can think about is the scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail where the French castle guards are arguing about an African Swallow carrying a coconut. I suggest gloves so as to limit the skin to feather contact and a hat to keep the mother bird out of the Mrs. hair and to not bump the hanging flower pot which contains a sparrows nest with babies. That would be all she needed, a dozen little fluff balls running around the porch from two different species. And what if she put them back into the wrong nest? A wren being raised by a sparrow? Youd get a small bird with a Napoleon complex. Ten minutes later, the alarm went off again and it was announced that the Mrs. had rescued five of the six babies and only suffered a small amount of poop on her gloves. I said I would try to locate the last one when I got home and remembered a show from Marlin Perkins Wild Kingdom. Hopefully, I wouldnt need the burlap sack that Jim used to capture everything from Anacondas to warthogs while Marlin sat in the comfort of his Land Rover. We have two bird nests on the porch. A robins nest is in the small pine tree next to the house. We have GG (Gordy Groundhog) and his family under the big pine tree. I was not allowed to relocate him even though the mound of dirt is in the back yard and now has five feet of long grass surrounding it. His cousins live in the hedgerow but visit daily and really enjoy the clover which sprouted instead of grass. There is B&BB, (Barney and Beverly Bunny) and their tribe which started out as only four but continues to grow. We have several unnamed red and gray squirrels, a bear which only visits when the bird feeders are out and who turned two half-inch steel feeder poles into pretzels and a redtailed hawk which sits on top of the power pole, eyeing the bunny brood. The newest addition is a great horned owl which the Mrs. spotted 50 feet from the back porch on the limb of a dead tree. I dont know if it was checking out the groundhogs, rabbits or our cat which was sitting by the screen door watching the show but the crows were letting everyone know the owl was near. Its nice to see the birds of prey making a comeback and even nicer to be able to sit and watch them in their natural environment. I better cut the fields so they can find the mice and moles and give the others a fighting chance of making it through the summer. Berm clearing needs corrections

By CAMILLE FIOTI Dallas Post Correspondent

The board of supervisors announced Monday that the township received a compliance notice from the Luzerne County Conservation District regarding the way in which township employees have been clearing the berm of the roads. Representatives from the district inspected the berms on July 13 and noted the township failed to provide effective erosion and sedimentation controls. Chairman Dave Sutton said the district is cracking down on all municipalities and is requiring corrective measures that arent practical and are dangerous. Sutton said the district is requiring the township to put up silt fences or line the berms with hay bales, which he said would pose a risk to motorists. Town-

ship crews have been clearing the berms for the past several weeks to help control runoff and flooding on several township roads. He said the board plans to discuss the matter with the district. Well try to explain that what theyre asking us to do isnt practical, he said. It could cause a real safety issue. Supervisor Doug Ide said crews from drilling company Encana are working to reclaim the exploratory natural gas well pad at the Salansky site on Zosh Road in Lake Township. Once the company finishes the work and truck traffic is gone from the area, the company will begin to repair the roads it damaged. The affected roads are Outlet, Meeker, Meeker-Outlet, Slocum and Ide roads. The board opened bids for construction of a new roof for the municipal building. Only two bids were received which were from out-of-town contractors. Ark

Builders Corp., of Allentown, presented a bid of $37,730 and Spotts Brothers Inc., of Schuylkill Haven, sent in a bid in for $21,460. No local firms sent proposals for the job, despite advertising in The Times Leader and the Citizens Voice newspapers on two occasions, said treasurer Al Cragle. The township engineer will review the bids and make a recommendation. LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Where do memories go?

Dear Editor: My memory of Dallas Senior High School in 1965, when I was a brand new sophomore, was that it was a pristine, stateof-the-art, very cool school. If the school aged, which it must have since they decided to take it down...that means I have, too! Im not so sure I like this development or is it deconstruction? So, if they take down the school...what happens to our memories of high school years that lived inside the school since we last left them there? MOMENTS IN TIME
The History Channel On Aug. 4, 1892, Andrew and Abby Borden are found hacked to death in their Fall River, Mass., home. Daughter Lizzie, later immortalized in a famous rhyme, was arrested and charged with the double homicide. Taken with her Christian persona, the all-male jury acquitted her. Today, the house where the Borden murders occurred is a bed and breakfast. On Aug. 5, 1914, the worlds first electric traffic signal is put into place on the corner of Euclid Avenue and East 105th Street in Cleveland. It consisted of four pairs of red and green lights that served as stop-go indicators, each mounted on a corner post. On Aug. 6, 1928, Andy Warhol, one of the most influential artists of the latter part of the 20th century, is born in Pennsylvania. He took literally the advice of an art teacher who said he should paint the things he liked. He liked ordinary things, such as comic strips, canned soup and soft drinks, and so he painted them. On Aug. 2, 1939, Wes Craven, the man responsible for terrorizing millions of moviegoers with his Nightmare on Elm Street series, is born in Cleveland. Craven began his directing career with 1972s The Last House on the Left, a violent teen horror film. On Aug. 7, 1947, Kon-Tiki, a balsa wood raft captained by Norwegian anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl, completes a 4,300-mile, 101-day journey from Peru to Raroia in the Tuamotu Archipelago, near Tahiti. Heyerdahl wanted to prove his theory that prehistoric South Americans could have colonized the Polynesian islands by drifting on ocean currents. On Aug. 3, 1958, the U.S. nuclear submarine Nautilus accomplishes the first undersea voyage to the geographic North Pole. USS Nautilus, the worlds first nuclear submarine, dived at Point Barrow, Alaska, and traveled nearly 1,000 miles under the Arctic ice cap to reach the top of the world. On Aug. 1, 1966, Charles Whitman takes a stockpile of guns and ammunition to the observatory platform atop a 300-foot tower at the University of Texas and proceeds to shoot 46 people, killing 14 and wounding 31. 20 YEARS AGO
Recently, a seventh grade student at Dallas Middle School, Nathan Shedlock, was selected as the grand prize winner of the National Childrens Dental Health Month Video Contest. Nathans prize-winning video was selected as the best video submitted among Middle School students across Pennsylvania. Nathan received a $1,000 U.S. Savings Bond for his efforts, while his school and his audio visual ONLY YESTERDAY technical instructor, Mr. William Roberts, each received a $500 prize. Nathans video, entitled Miss Barka Howl Goes to the Dentist, was judged based on originality, production quality and overall message promoting dental health awareness. The Dallas Kiwanis selection committee for the High School Senior Girls All-Star Game, selected Charlotte Slocum as this years recipient of the annual award presented to the person who performed outstanding contribution to girls sports in Luzerne County. Charlotte has coached for six years in the Back Mountain Softball Association and coached the Back Mountain National All-Star team for six years where they won five district titles, one Regional title and finished third in State competition.

STRANGE BUT TRUE

By Samantha Weaver It was 20th-century U.S. Attorney General and Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson who made the following sage observation: The price of freedom of religion or of speech or of the press is that we must put up with, and even pay for, a good deal of rubbish. Its common knowledge that Microsoft founder Bill Gates is regularly ranked as one of the worlds wealthiest people, but you might not realize that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is the worlds wealthiest charitable organization, with an endowment of $36.7 billion. If youre planning a trip to Iowa anytime soon, you might want to schedule a stop in the town of Walcott. There you can visit the Iowa 80 Truckstop, the worlds largest. With a whopping 220 acres, the truck stop is 1.5 times the size of Disneyland. In a traditional Hungarian wedding ceremony, the bride wears a headdress made of woven wheat, thought to help ensure the couples fertility. Historians say that famed German composer Ludwig van Beethoven was quite particular about his coffee. It is claimed that he counted out exactly 60 coffee beans for each cup that he drank. The longest mountain range on Earth is located underwater -- in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, to be specific. Its nearly 25,000 miles long, and the only part of it thats above water is the nation of Iceland. If you are an American of a certain age, you almost certainly spent time watching the 1960s sitcom I Dream of Jeannie. The iconic bottle where the genie lived wasnt actually created for the show; the set dressers used a Jim Beam holiday decanter from 1964.

The algae scare at Harveys Lake several weeks ago hurt many businesses there and may force at least one of them to close permanently. Over the weekend one businessperson after another complained that the normally heavy summer tourist trade was cut drastically by an announcement by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources that a large quantity of an unpleasant algae has surfaced in the lake, threatening skin rashes. The agency later modified its warning, downgrading the algae to less virulent than it first thought. James McCaffrey, owner of Sandy Beach, would only answer I cant comment on that when asked about rumors that he was hurt so badly by the drop in trade that he was thinking about shutting down. Carolyn Straka was the grand prize winner in a match the numbers contest conducted by Jeans Discount Fabrics, Dallas Shopping Center. Straka won a stereo home center. Other winners in the contest include Marsha Meade, who won a sewing machine, and Renee Yuscellis, who won a grandfather clock.

Back Mountain defeated Plains five times during season, loses in title game.
Plains needed to defeat Back Mountain twice in a row to win the Region 5 championship and it did just that to claim the title for the first time since 2006. Back Mountain had beaten Plains five times in a row earlier this season. Plains won the first game, 2212, then took the second, 7-4, to advance to the state tournament. In the opener, Plains built a 124-1 lead and led, 14-4, after five innings. Since the 10-run rule doesnt apply until the seventh inning in regional and state play, Back Mountain had time to inch closer and avoid an early finish. Back Mountain, which finished its season at 23-6, mounted a comeback, putting up four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the game competitive and cut the lead to 14-8. Plains outscored Back Mountain, 8-4, in the final three innings See LEGION, Page 10 to turn the contest into a blowout again and give the team momentum heading into the nightcap. Back Mountain Brian Stepniak, led the offense in the first game, going 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. In the second game, Marc Noyalis, Eric Ringsdorf, Ted Ritsick and Pat Condo all had two hits for Back Mountain. Earlier in the week, Steve Ruch tossed a complete game six-hit shutout and stayed hot with the bat as well, going 2-for-3 with two RBI, as Back Mountain defeated Plains, 10-0. At the conclusion of the game, Ruch was hitting .643 (9-for14) at the plate in the double-elimination event. The only inning which Ruch allowed two hits was the first. Plains only got one hit in the third, fourth, seventh and eighth. Ruch struck out just four batters but got a lot of help from his defense as the Back Mountain

Chris Kim, of Dallas, won the Boys 16-Under Singles Tennis Championship held at Split Rock Resort. In the semi-finals, Kim defeated Ryan Mc Donnell of New Jersey in straight sets 6-1, 7-6. In the finals, he faced Phat Le of Eastern Pennsylvania, wining the first set, 6-1, but losing the second, 3-6. The third set would be decided in a 10-point match tie-breaker which Kim won, 10-6. Kim, 15, also advanced to the finals of the Boys 18Under Division before losing to top seeded Jeremy Joakim of New Jersey 6-4, 6-2. Kim trains at Valley Tennis & Swim Club in Shavertown and Birchwood Tennis & Fitness Club in Clarks Summit.

BMT wins D-31 and Section 5, loses states

Back Mountain American 10-year-old All-Stars captured the District 31 championship with a victory over West Pittston and the Section 5 championship with back-to-back victories over Plains to advance to the PA State Championship finals at Milton Little League. But, when it got to the state finals, the locals lost to defending champion Warwick, 10-5, in the first round. Back Mountain was still alive in the double elimination tournament, however, and was scheduled to face Tri-Valley on Thursday in Milton. In District 31 play, BMT American defeated Bob Horlacher, Northwest and West Pittston twice to advance to the Section 5 Tournament hosted by North Pocono Little League. After an opening round loss to North Pocono, BMT American won four games in four days over Wallenpaupack, North Pocono and Plains twice to win the section championship and advance to the PA state finals. The team is comprised of 10 year-old players from the Dallas School District as well as Wyoming Seminary and Good Shepherd Academy.

tem, a national standard, which measures houses from the beginning of a street every 52.8 feet. It doesnt make a lot of sense on streets that are established, said Congleton. If there were three lots next to me are that are empty, then it makes sense, and you could leave space for the numbers 50 and 48. But there is not enough room between me and the next house - its our yards. Residents living in Newberry Estates, a planned, gated community, are also feeling the effects of the project. Resident Jim Devlin said theres a street in the

community numbered consecutively and a break at an intersection increases the house numbers on the other side of the block by 50. How in the world is the general public going to recognize this, looking at numbers that jump with no rhyme or reason for it? he said Devlin. He has been working with residents in the community to settle the issue, including regularly speaking with post office and emergency officials to better understand the changes he and others face during the project. Rosencrans said once the addresses are finalized, they will never need to be changed again, and those who do not comply with the changes could face a fine. If a letter doesnt get deliveran ignition source would need to be present and all the pipelines safeguards would need to fail. Even in that scenario, he said, the church and school would not be damaged. Reza said he was not instructed by Chief to discuss the risk for houses on nearby Fairground Road to sustain damage caused by a leak at the proposed site. He said the company has implied there will be a very stringent pipeline integrity management system implemented for this pipeline associated with the metering station, but the program has not yet been devised because the plans have not been approved. Residents and opposing attorneys questioned Rezas science. zoning hearing board in protest of the townships requirements for land development and zoning in relation to the pipeline. The company is currently working with the township planning commission for its pipeline application, and engineer Thomas Doughton said that work will continue despite the companys protest. Council member Ryan Doughton said the council was formed

ed, its not a big deal, but if we dont respond, we get sued or someone could die, said Rosencrans. This minor inconvenience is worth a lifetime of safety. Congleton said she doesnt understand why an established road needs to change and plans to have a lawyer look into the issue. Weve been here for 50 years, she said. Dallas Fire Chief Harry Vivian said the changes are worth making, especially in an emergency situation. I cant stress enough that residents should comply with addressing changes by 911, he said. Being a first responder, its very frustrating when there is somebody calling for help and not being able to help them. Some questioned whether the engineer was aware of neighboring houses or the age of the Transco interstate pipeline, into which Chief is planning to tap its approximately 30-mile gathering line from Susquehanna County. Reza said he was not instructed to consider either of these situations. Chief is proposing to build a metering facility on a property located off Hildebrandt Road about 1,300 feet from the Dallas School District campus. Through negotiations, the company has agreed to remove aspects of its operation from the site, including an 8,000gallon underground tank of the flammable odorant mercaptan and a 100-foot communications tower. He said, while the stalemate could be moved forward, he is not optimistic at this point. In other news, the board approved an agreement to purchase more than 100 street signs from Bassler Equipment of Forty Fort in conjunction with the Luzerne County 911 readdressing project and routine maintenance. taxes to the following property owners: Michael and Mary Jo Shisko for a property in Harveys Lake in the amount of $972.94, Edward and Louise Hennigan for a property located in Harveys Lake in the amount of $896.98 and Bernard and Jane Podcasy for two properties located in Harveys Lake in the amounts of $882.34 and $792.03. Approved the exoneration of Robert Broody, of Shavertown, from payment of real estate taxes due to a disability incurred during a period of war or armed conflict as determined by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. and has met twice and added that a proposed ordinance draft is being drawn up by borough engineer, Jack Varaly. Whentheordinanceisprepared, it will be publically advertised and a meeting will be held, said Attorney Charles McCormick. Resident Juliane von Schmeling questioned council regarding recent stories on residents complaining about noise from motorcycles. She asked if the safety checks to be held this summer would encompass all vehicles or simply out motorcycles. The council responded by stating that, if safety checks are scheduled, all vehicles will be involved.

Kiss the Pig Contest underway

The Dallas Harvest Festival Steering Committee announces the start of the 2011 Kiss the Pig Contest. This summer, its all about the ICE CREAM, as four Back Mountain purveyors of that sweet, creamy concoction scoop it out for charity and bragging rights to kiss our new potbelly pig. The 2011 Kiss the Pig contestants are Carl Peterlin aka Unca Heav, of Back Mountain Creamery working for the First Lt. Michael J. Cleary Memorial Scholarship Fund; Cody Kyttle, of CKs Summer Treats, working Misericordia Universitys Women with Children; Britney Hall, of Friendlys, working for the Back Mountain Memorial Library; and Dr. Doug Ayers, of The Lands at Hillside Farms, working for The Lands at Hillside Farms. For a $1 donation, members of the public are invited to vote for their favorite ice cream and/or charity at all four businesses. In addition, ballot jars, ballots and posters will be placed in a number of Back Mountain businesses, including N-Mart, Trucksville; Pump On, Dallas; Ochmans Coins and Jewelry, Dallas; J&J Deli, Dallas; and the Back Mountain Memorial Library, Dallas. Ballot jars will be collected and the votes tallied on September 17. The winning smooch will take place during the Ninth Annual Dallas Harvest Festival on Sunday, Sept.18 and will be announced by District Judge James Tupper. The winning charity/nonprofit will be awarded 50 percent of all ballot monies collected while the remaining funds will be applied toward next years festival. In the event of a natural gas leak, the gas would eventually disperse into the air and its concentration would fall below 4.3 percent, making it no longer combustible.
