Pittsburgh: Forget Everything You Think You Know Tepper School Resources
As B-schools go, we are decidedly different from the typical MBA program. And we are unapologetic about it.
We are among the smallest because we believe exceptional community and teamwork must be inherent parts of the student experience. These prized characteristics are best achieved when everybody in the school from professors to classmates to the receptionist in the lobby knows your name. We choose to teach in a way that is rigorous and analytical so that our graduates reputations for demonstrating certainty in uncertain times is unmistakable. Increasingly, there is no such thing as an honest-to-goodness precedent. We place a premium on knowing how to think; and watching you go where youve never been and never thought you could.

the Carnegie Mellon University campus that will expose you to the industries and functional areas relevant to specic career choices. We are committed to being a leader of innovation, and our current curriculum review is one example of how Tepper MBAs stay ahead of business practice. Thinking, itself, is a powerful form of leadership. One reason corporate recruiters rate Tepper School MBAs so highly is the undisputed intellectual advantage our graduates bring into their jobs. We call this advantage analytical decision-making. Dont make the mistake of pigeonholing our program as quant or all about numbers. Instead, think of us and our high regard for analytics as a place where you discover your potential to solve unstructured problems with powerful accuracy and strategic ability. You will have no fear of complexity. You will distinguish yourself by mastering a framework for assessing a situation with uncertain, complex and dynamic variables and produce a solution that represents a better decision. What does this advantage really mean? You will be a high-performer who fully understands how to lead, negotiate and communicate with cutting-edge tools that enable you to utilize predictive modeling techniques that forecast and test decision-making outcomes.
Best of all, these analytical tools will serve you throughout your lifetime. There is no avor of the month coursework and program formats. There are no short-cuts to leadership. Those executives who make things happen are the ones who possess condence that comes from understanding the facts necessary to make smart decisions.

Go brain go.
The full-time Tepper MBA experience has three phases: Year One, Summer Internship and Year Two. The two-year experience builds upon the core fundamentals, providing an ever-expanding skill set for better decision-making and career leadership, as you continue through the program. No experience is wasted. From the team presentations in the classroom to social events, to the case competitions to the International Festival, your time at the Tepper School will be an unforgettable experience that blends new learning with lifelong friendships.
Our famous mini-semester system is the foundation around which your learning and career preparation revolve. The mini is a block of courses that lasts roughly seven and a half weeks, which is half the time normally provided at most B-schools. (It also provides twice the electives that youll nd elsewhere.) Challenging and fast-paced? Absolutely, which is why Tepper MBAs are renowned for making impressive transitions into their full-time jobs. A full schedule, with competing deadlines and priorities, makes for an executive who knows how to take a leadership role.

It has been said that imitation is the sincerest form of attery. Today, some form of Carnegie Mellons original academic model is taught at every leading business school.
We concur with one of our Nobel laureates, the late Professor Herb Simon, who said, The essence of leadership and management is making decisions in a state of uncertainty.
You can expect the unexpected throughout your career. What differentiates us is the same characteristic that will differentiate you: original thinking that produces better decisions that impact organizations and society.

INTERNSHIPS
Your summer internship is a 10-week interview. Todays hiring trend reects a preference among companies to use the MBA internship as an evaluation for hiring full-time employees. Nearly half our students receive full-time job offers at the end of their summer internships. Internship interviews begin in early winter, as Mini 3 is underway, and opportunities vary by company and industry. If you are seeking a job in consulting, your internship may highlight market assessment and thought leadership projects that encompass impact analysis models or channel optimization recommendations. In the consumer packaged goods industry, Tepper School MBA interns work on market entry plans, as well as consumer and trade promotional strategy initiatives that require rapid turnaround. Within the nancial services industry, our students in banking and corporate treasury areas design structured nance vehicles and value international trade obligations and performing/non-performing global loan portfolios.
These excerpts from students resumes highlight a few of the internship projects that Tepper MBAs have managed: Merck & Co., Inc. Leveraged programming and nancial modeling skills to build a dynamic sales forecasting model to determine market potential for an adult rotavirus vaccine. Analyzed the sales, cash ows and risks associated with potential solutions using Monte Carlo simulations; presented results and recommendations to Mercks Finance Executive Committee. Deutsche Bank Traded European bond futures and developed global macro and relative-value trading strategies. Valued defaulted Soviet-era obligations, Paris Club debt and Eastern European non-performing loan portfolios. Worked with U.S, power trading desk, and Calendar and Gas Basis Trades were executed based on my research and fundamental analysis. Caterpillar Inc. Teamed with quarry and construction truck team to develop a model to analyze protability and risks from possible global strategies; identied relationships among
various business factors such as market share, price and availability; and presented the model to high-level managers. Caterpillar Six Sigma Green Belt Trained. Booz Allen Hamilton Analyzed market and operational structures of a construction product industry and its distribution channels. Designed nationallydeployed statistical surveys for market segmentation of various target customer groups. Analyzed the results and generated initial customer segmentation based on trends. Proctor & Gamble Developed and executed marketing plans to defend against competitor product launches. Conducted session to forecast competitor moves using Response Modeling and AC Nielsen data. Analyzed results to determine next steps and forecasted longer-term implications for product and category at large.

When he was ve, his parents put a racket in his hand, and at the age of 12, he was ranked among the top 20 players in Colombia. How could he have known at the time that his true talent lay elsewhere? For instance, he earned his undergraduate degree in industrial engineering. He traveled to Spain where he got his masters in applied math and, at the same time, interned at a bank. It was there where he became an expert in derivatives.

Finance is paired with the MBA degree for a course sequence focused on quantitative aspects of investment banking, sales and trading and portfolio management. This dual degree requires one additional semester of study beyond the traditional Tepper MBA program. The strength of the MBA/MSCF dual degree is the caliber of faculty from throughout the Carnegie Mellon campus who oversee the curriculum and work with students on various aspects of career preparation. Likewise, the MSCF program includes an internship option, which is uncommon within most nancial engineering programs. Internships provide an excellent platform for students to transition into full-time jobs. Both recruiters and alumni have been vocal advocates of the MBA/MSCF degree. For those students who meet the prerequisites, this option is an ideal path to set yourself apart in the marketplace. No other business school offers a degree that combines the coursework, internship and career services support of a nancial engineering/MBA program.

Dont ask me what my top speed was. But I do remember it felt spectacular. My passion for ski racing subsided as soon as it dawned on me that I could kill myself. It took a very long time for that to dawn on me. My undergrad degree is in chemistry and business. A double-dipper. But after not too much thought, I decided that lab rats dont have fun. My husband and I are both in Seattle now, me with Microsoft and he at Vulcan real Estate Development. That worked out. Thank you, Tepper. Whats unique here is an analytical approach to solving problems. It makes innite sense when you think about it because it leads to better decisions. I learned to prioritize, so I could handle a pretty intense workload. I became acutely adept at writing marketing plans. Speaking of which, I wrote the marketing plan that helped launch Ofce 2010 for mid-markets and small businesses. Yeah, I was proud of that. The advice Id give to people coming to Tepper is to balance your workload and have a life. There are so many interesting people and so much to do in Pittsburgh. Dont bury yourself. Youll truly be missing out. When we were dating, my husband, John, tried to impress me by skiing a half pipe. I told him I was impressed all the way to the hospital. So after three knee surgeries, hes into shing, and I still look longingly at my skis. In the closet. Occasionally, I weep.

We dont know if it was the pressure of coloring between the lines, unking building blocks, or a distaste for the feel of Play-Doh but... One day, when John was in kindergarten, he walked home from school, told his mom he was quitting, and announced, Im gonna be a sherman. His abdication from kindergarten did not work out. Instead, hes underwritten more than a billion dollars of real estate development projects, including a 1.5 million-square-foot space (six city blocks) for Amazons headquarters. He eventually moved on to the rst grade. At the University of Kansas, John wanted to be an engineer. Thats what his dad, two uncles, grandfather and his grandfathers brother did. Since he was a skier, a hiker and a kayaker, John also loved the prospect of working outdoors. His degree in civil engineering took him to construction projects in places like Guatemala, where he was instrumental in building the countrys rst coal power plant. Now, he and Monica have settled in Seattle. Hes the Senior Development Underwriter at Vulcan, Inc. He will not quit this job to become a sherman. But, he will eat seafood. Thats the trade-off. He decided he wanted the whole business package for his future. John pursued an MBA. The Tepper School was his rst choice, inuenced by its #2 nance ranking in the Wall Street Journal. He also felt the schools emphasis on analytics (and therefore creative solutions) would prove more benecial than relying predominantly on case studies. The Tepper School also introduced him to Monica, his future wife. What more could you ask of a B-school?
Johns advice to anyone who asks: Never stop asking questions, make the most out of your professors time (because they want you to), and get to know the Burgh.

This is evidenced by the thousands of alumni who have enjoyed successful careers ranging from innovative entrepreneurs to Fortune 100 CEOs.

We also want to protect and enhance the value of the degrees that we confer on our students. To guard against any allegations that candidates may have misrepresented themselves in their admission applications in an effort to increase their chances of gaining admission to a competitive graduate program, we have made the decision to establish an independent verication of application credentials for all of our masters students. We believe that this verication process will support our efforts to ensure integrity throughout the program. Upon admission, you will receive more details about this process. IMPORTANT INFORMATION All application materials become the property of Carnegie Mellon and are subject to verication. After 90 days, we reserve the right to make a decision using materials we have received. Application fees and enrollment deposits are nonrefundable. Since our program requirements, curriculum and schedule are subject to change at any time, please visit: www.tepper.cmu.edu/mba for updated information.
