While admission to the IHU is competitive, our admissions policy vigorously supports equality of opportunity. When to apply:

IHU operates on a rolling admissions basis. This means that candidates apply for, and are admitted to our programmes all year round. We suggest, however, that you apply as early as possible to ensure a quick response and place availability. We aim to provide decisions within two weeks of receiving your complete application. Please ensure that you complete the application form fully and submit all your supporting documents for us to make an informed decision.

Our Facilities:

IHU is situated in Thermi, a pleasant suburb of Thessaloniki. Specically developed to facilitate modern learning, the university building is equipped with state of the art information technology, like online databases and a sophisticated E-Learning platform, as well as an excellent learning resource centre providing a comprehensive, up-to-date selection of books and journals and an attractive area for study. The campus is located conveniently close to Thessalonikis Makedonia Airport. Access to the city centre is easy.

MA in Black Sea Cultural Studies


The programme will focus on two principal areas: Archaeology and History Politics and Economy Our students (depending on the stream they choose) will be able to work in: Educational and research institutes and academies all over the world dealing with the Black Sea region Archaeological services of the Black Sea countries and Greece or foreign archaeological missions in those countries Museums, galleries and other places of collection, study and exhibition of works of art, especially from this region The Diplomatic Corps or other state services Businesses which operate or have interests in the Black Sea region

Core Courses
These Courses are required for both streams of specialisation Historical-cultural geography cartography of the Black Sea region (ancient and medieval period) Monumental topography of the Black Sea region Medieval and modern history of the Black Sea region Contemporary political and diplomatic history of the Black Sea countries (20th cent.)

The Required & Elective Courses


The Required courses for each stream must be followed as below. There are three required stream modules. The Electives modules represent a variety of subject areas. You may choose two elective courses from those displayed for each stream.

The School of Humanities


The School of Humanities is launching the MA in Black Sea Cultural Studies, which is based on an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the history and culture of the Black Sea region, an area of increasing geopolitical and economic importance. The Black Sea region was and continues to be one of the great international cultural gateways, something very important for Europe as well as for Asia and the East. During the last decades, Research Institutions and University Departments all over the world promote research programmes concentrated on this specic area, which has rich scientic material to oer. The Masters Programme MA in Black Sea Cultural Studies provides the student with an outstanding opportunity to specialise in a research domain of great signicance in our times. The ambitious aim of our distinguished scientists is to oer compact, hands-on and thorough knowledge. Excellence in the oered programme is ensured by the proper synthesis of: Modern Curricula Best educators Innovative & interdisciplinary academic approach Respective qualications of the students Links, cooperation and research projects with Academies and Research Institutes in the greater European region and especially in the Black Sea region.

Programme Structure: The programmes duration is three semesters, from which the rst two are covered by the courses and the third is dedicated to the Master dissertation. The courses are four core, three stream core and two stream elective (total nine courses). ** Some of the elective courses may not be oered in a particular year, depending entirely on student demand.

Politics Economy Stream


Required Courses for stream: Native countries and globalisation Black Sea countries and the European Union Examination of the modern economy in the Black Sea region Electives: Immigration and minorities in SE Europe Black Sea region and Asia Civilisations in their neighbourhood. Relations and interactions The Timetable: The course is a 12 month full-time programme of study.

Masters dissertation
As a part of the MA programme, you will work on a 3-month project relating to your academic interests and career aspirations.
