PART-A(Marks:32)
1. Design a suitable roof truss for a workshop of 16mx18m. Assume the necessary
data. Draw to a suitable scale
(a) Elevation
(b) Convection detail.
2. Design web and flanges for a riveted plate girder of span 18m carrying two concen-
trated loads of 200 kN each equispaced over the span. Show curtailment of flange
plates. Check the suggested section for bending and shear stresses.

PART-A(Marks:32)
1. Design a suitable truss for wind loads. Data: Spacing of trusses = 4m, Span =
18m. Assume the necessary data.
2. Explain :
(a) Shear buckling of web plate
(b) Compression buckling of web plate
(c) Failure of web by yielding and permissible shear stresses.
PART-B (Marks:16x3=48)
3. (a) Explain fillet weld and butt weld with neat diagrams
(b) A 150mm 16mm plate is welded to other plate by two side welds 120mm each
and fillet of 100mm length. Find the safe axial load to which this joint may
be subjected if the size of the weld is 7mm.
4. Explain various shapes of sections which can be used as beam members. Explain
their uses. What are various names given to the structural members classified as
beams?
5. In a truss bridge, a diagonal consists of a 14mm thick flat carrying a pull of 400kN
and connects to a gusset plate by double cover butt joint. The thickness of each
cover plate is 8mm. determine the number of rivets and the width of the flat
required. Arrange the rivets in diagonal riveting and calculate efficiency of the
joint.
6. Design a splice for a column ISHB 300 @58.8kg/m carrying an axial load of 400kN
and a moment of 12 kNm. About x-x axis. Assume the ends of the column to be
milled.
7. What are the situation that warrant an industrial building to have a crane girder?
What are the advantages of a crane girder? List out important parts of the crane
girder.

(a) Elevation
(b) Details of Ridge Joint.
2. Explain :
PART-B (Marks:16x3=48)
4. Explain various shapes of sections which can be used as beam members. Explain
their uses. What are various names given to the structural members classified as
beams?
5. Design a tension member subjected to a pull of 300kN using unequal angles placed
back to back with their longer legs connected on the same side of the gusset plate
by 18mm diameter rivets. Also design the end connection using hand driven rivets.
Sketch the joint. Find the strength of the member designed as above when it is
connected on either side of the gusset plate.
