PART-A(Marks:32)

1. Design a Tubular Truss for an Industrial building situated at Vishakhapatnam is


having following data span of Truss = 12m (Fink Type Tress), rise of Truss = 3m
eave above G L = 7m, spacing of Trusses = 5m, Spacing of pulins = 1.4m. Draw
elevation of the Truss to a suitable scale.
2. Explain :
(a) Shear buckling of web plate
(b) Compression buckling of web plate
(c) Failure of web by yielding and permissible shear stresses.

PART-B (Marks:16x3=48)

3. Explain various types of welding processes with neat diagrams.


4. Explain various shapes of sections which can be used as beam members. Explain
their uses. What are various names given to the structural members classified as
beams?
5. Design a tension member subjected to a pull of 350kN using unequal angles placed
back to back with their longer legs connected on the same side of the gusset plate by
18mm diameter rivets. Sketch the joint showing pitch, edge distance etc. What will
be the load carrying capacity of the member in case the shorter lags are connected
on same side of the gusset.
6. A column made up of ISHB 150@ 30.6 kg/m carries an eccentric load at eccentric-
ities 3.2cm from x-x axis and 4.5cm from y-y axis. If the effective length of the
column is 3.00m calculate the maximum safe value of this eccentric load.
7. A steel stanchion consisting of ISHB 250 at 54.7kg/m carries an axial load of 600kN
and a moment of 10KN-m .It is to be supported on a concrete pedestal of bearing
capacity of 4.2N/mm2 . Design the concrete base if the bearing capacity of soil is
300N/mm2 .

PART-A(Marks:32)

1. Design a suitable roof truss for a workshop of 16mx18m. Assume the necessary
data. Draw to a suitable scale
(a) Elevation
(b) Convection detail.
2. Design web and flanges for a riveted plate girder of span 18m carrying two concen-
trated loads of 200 kN each equispaced over the span. Show curtailment of flange
plates. Check the suggested section for bending and shear stresses.

PART-B (Marks:16x3=48)

3. Explain various types of welding processes with neat diagrams.


4. A beam of clear span 15meters has a bearing of 300mm at each end. It has to carry
a superimposed load of 100kN/m Design the section as a plated beam assuming
that only 12mm mild steel plates are available. The top flange of the plated beam
may be assumed to be laterally restrained at 3m c/c. also calculate the theoretical
and actual points of cut off for the plates used.
5. Gabbled corrugated asbestos roofing is supported on steel trusses of 10m span, rise
2.5m, spaced 3.5m center to center. The load is 120 kg/m2 of roof area and wind
load is 100kg/m2 normal to roof. Taking 4 purlins one at each end of the slope and
other equally spaced, design an unequal angle purlin with long leg perpendicular
to slope of roof.
6. What is compression member? Classify compression member based on slenderness
ratio of the column.
7. Design a gantry girder for an industrial building to carry an hand operated overhead
traveling crane with the following data. Crane capacity is 250 kN. Weight of crane
excluding crab is 200 kN. Weight of crab is 5 kN. Span of crane between rails is18
m. Minimum hook approach is1.0 m. Wheel base is 3.0 m. Span of gantry girder
is 9 m. Weight of rail section is 30 kg/m. Check the suggested section for bending
stresses. Draw to scale sectional elevation of the girder.

1. Design a suitable truss for wind loads. Data: Spacing of trusses = 4m, Span =
18m. Assume the necessary data.
2. Explain :
(a) Shear buckling of web plate

3. (a) Explain fillet weld and butt weld with neat diagrams
(b) A 150mm 16mm plate is welded to other plate by two side welds 120mm each
and fillet of 100mm length. Find the safe axial load to which this joint may
be subjected if the size of the weld is 7mm.
4. Explain various shapes of sections which can be used as beam members. Explain
their uses. What are various names given to the structural members classified as
beams?
5. In a truss bridge, a diagonal consists of a 14mm thick flat carrying a pull of 400kN
and connects to a gusset plate by double cover butt joint. The thickness of each
cover plate is 8mm. determine the number of rivets and the width of the flat
required. Arrange the rivets in diagonal riveting and calculate efficiency of the
joint.
6. Design a splice for a column ISHB 300 @58.8kg/m carrying an axial load of 400kN
and a moment of 12 kNm. About x-x axis. Assume the ends of the column to be
milled.
7. What are the situation that warrant an industrial building to have a crane girder?
What are the advantages of a crane girder? List out important parts of the crane
girder.

1. Design a Roof Truss for an Industrial Building proposed to be built in Bangalore


city. Particulars of the Building are Length = 120m, Width = 2mm, Roof Truss ?
Fink, Eaves height = 8m assume G.L Truss span = 24m, rise = 5m. Truss spacing
= 5m, Purlin spacing = 1.3m, Roof sheeting = Acc sheets.
Draw to scale:

(a) Elevation
(b) Details of Ridge Joint.

2. Explain :

(a) Shear buckling of web plate


(b) Compression buckling of web plate
(c) Failure of web by yielding and permissible shear stresses.

3. Explain the following in connection with fillet weld

(c) Effective length of weld. Explain various IS code provisions regarding the
above.

4. Explain various shapes of sections which can be used as beam members. Explain
their uses. What are various names given to the structural members classified as
beams?

5. Design a tension member subjected to a pull of 300kN using unequal angles placed
back to back with their longer legs connected on the same side of the gusset plate
by 18mm diameter rivets. Also design the end connection using hand driven rivets.
Sketch the joint. Find the strength of the member designed as above when it is
connected on either side of the gusset plate.

6. Design a suitable section for a column carrying a load of 350 kN at an eccentricity
of 4.0m the length of the column is 4.5m and its ends are effectively restrained in
position as well as direction.

(d) Minimum clearance
(e) Wheel base.
