BY KEN GRABOWSKI
ASSOCIATE EDITOR
MANISTEE Members of the Rolling
Thunder Inc. Michigan Chapter # 1
received a special honor during their mem-
bership meeting on July 17 at the Manistee
Moose Lodge when Army Sgt. 1st Class
Adam Schuessler presented them with a
flag that flew over Headquarters Support
Company 18th Airborne Corps Victory
Base Complex (Al Faw Palace) in Baghdad
Iraq.
Schuessler is a Manistee County
native who has served one tour of duty in
Operation New Dawn in Iraq, and three
tours of duty during Operation Iraqi
Freedom. He told how the flag presenta-
tion came about when he was approached
by local Rolling Thunder member John
Stocki on the subject nearly a year ago.
Eight months ago, John asked me if it
were possible to fly a flag over in Iraq that
I could get to you, said Schuessler. I told
him I would be glad to do it, and then I
found out I was going to be working at the
Al Faw Palace Headquarters in Baghdad. I
thought this would be a great opportunity
to fly a flag for Rolling Thunder.
Schuessler said that due to the signifi-
cance of where he was stationed for this
tour of duty it wasnt as easy to fly a flag at
this location as it might be at some other
areas of Iraq. However, what made it even
more significant was some very historical
turn of events the day before the flag was
set to fly in Iraq.
It took a little coordinating to get it
done, but it was decided that May 2 would
be the day that it was to fly over Al Faw
Palace headquarters, said Schuessler.
There is some significance to this flag
because it just so happens that when we
woke up on May 2 we found out about
the killing of Osama bin Laden the night
before. So that morning the honor guard
flew this flag on the flag pole after the hon-
ors were rendered. What you have here is
the first flag flown over the USFI (United
States Forces in Iraq) headquarters after
Osama bin Laden was killed.
The flag was placed in a special case
and included a certificate from Lt. Gen.
Lloyd Austin III who is the four star com-
mander of Iraq. Schuessler read the certifi-
cate that came with it.
It said this flag of the United States of
America is presented to Rolling Thunder
Michigan Chapter # 1 and this flag was
flown over the compound Camp Victory
Baghdad, Iraq during Operation New
Dawn on May 2, 2011, said Schuessler.
Thank you for your support of the sol-
diers, sailors, Marines, airmen and Coast
Guard presently deployed and it is signed
by Command Sgt. Joseph R. Allan and
command Lt. Gen. Lloyd J. Austin III.
Also inscribed on the certificate was the
soldiers creed that Schuessler read. It goes
as follows:
The Soldiers Creed
I am an American Soldier.
I am a Warrior and a member of a
team.
I serve the people of the United States
and live the Army Values.
I will always place the mission first.
I will never accept defeat.
I will never quit.
I will never leave a fallen comrade.
I am disciplined, physically and men-
tally tough, trained and proficient in my
warrior tasks and drills.
I always maintain my arms, my equip-
ment and myself.
I am an expert and I am a professional.
I stand ready to deploy, engage, and
destroy the enemies of the
United States of America in close com-
bat.
I am a guardian of freedom and the
American way of life.
I am an American Soldier.
The Army Sgt. 1st Class paid tribute to
the local Rolling Thunder and their efforts
to support the troops presently serving
their country.
Thank you to all of you, said
Schuessler. What you guys do and the
tireless support to us is often a thankless
job. Its just an honor to come back here
today because you give your time and your
money to support us, so thank you for
everything you do.
Stocki then presented Schuessler with
a banner of support that was signed by
members of the Rolling Thunder that he
will be taking back to Iraq when he rejoins
his unit in the near future.

Small town people are the best kind
Im a small town person.
Always have been, always will
be and darn proud of it.
There is something about the
values you find a small town and
the people who live there that
separate them from all the oth-
ers in this world. Its something
people who move here from a
big city just dont seem to under-
stand. Small town people actually
care about each other and a per-
sons word or handshake means
something.
You dont find that in a big
city or its people.
Last week I had the opportu-
nity to view one of those small
town moments that make life
here so special. What I saw was
the community of Bear Lake
reaching out to give a hug of
appreciation and love to one of
its own in Elroy Urbanus.
Let me tell you, folks, it was a
well deserved hug.
I have been covering stories
for many years and there isnt
much that touches me to the
heart anymore, but this one
did. It not only touched me it
brought a tears to my eyes.
Elroy is a retired custodian
of 30 years and bus driver of 45
years for the Bear Lake Schools.
It isnt any secret that he is deal-
ing with some serious health
issues, but that hasnt stopped
him from being a special part of
his community.
That was more than evident
by the love the community
showed for Elroy and the love he
showed back to them that night.
It is something that filled the
schools library from corner to
corner.
Not being a member of the
Bear Lake community gave me
the unique perspective of looking
in on a special moment from a
different angle. However, more
importantly it reminded me why
Manistee County means so much
to me.
People caring about other
people. It doesnt get any better
than that.
There wasnt a dry eye in
that media center as Bear Lake
superintendent Mike Matesich
struggled himself to control his
emotions in presenting Urbanus
with a plaque. His words rang
home so true to the character,
dedication and community spirit
Elroy has shown for Bear Lake all
his life.
We are fortunate to have a
gentleman like Elroy in the dis-
trict, said Matesich. We give
you this plaque in great apprecia-
tion from the community, school
and staff. Thank you. You are a
true friend of Bear Lake Schools,
a true friend of education and a
true friend of the board of educa-
tion.
It couldnt have been said any
better, Mike.
What is sad about todays
world is people like Elroy
Urbanus and the spirit that com-
munities like Bear Lake carry for
their fellow citizens is vanishing
at a rapid pace. Its the me
world we live in where everyone
only thinks of number one and
you dont get people who care
about their fellow citizens.
That is sad because we have
lost part of the true spirit that
made this country great. We need
more front porch swings, conver-
sations over the fence, picnics,
family gatherings, and conversa-
tion. You dont find that in tex-
ting, e-mail, tweets, or anything
else other than real conversation
between people.
It is things like those that
make moments like the ones that
happened at Bear Lake Schools
last Wednesday so special when
they take place. People caring
about people.
God bless you, Elroy. It is peo-
ple like you and the good citizens
of Bear Lake that keep hope in
the hearts of the rest of us. It also
makes us proud to say we live in
Manistee County, and it is some-
thing I hope to do long after...
I see you next Wednesday.

With temperatures
climbing into the 90s
this week and communi-
ties experiencing heat
advisories, the Michigan
Department of Community
Health (MDCH) is advising
residents of the health risks
associated with extreme
temperatures and preven-
tive measures they can take
to stay safe.
Body temperature can
start to rise any time tem-
peratures are in the upper
80s and above, and this can
cause muscle cramps, dizzi-
ness, severe heat illness and
even death.
The elderly and young
children are especially vul-
nerable when it comes to
the effects of extreme heat,
said Olga Dazzo, director of
the MDCH. Its a good idea
to check frequently on loved
ones, neighbors and friends
who may be at greater risk
for heat illness.
Heat illness occurs when
the body is unable to cool
down. The body normally
cools down by sweating.
During extremely hot
weather, sweating may not
be enough to cool the body.
Thats when people can
become overheated to the
point of becoming ill.
People should drink
water frequently even
when they may not be
thirsty in order to stay
hydrated, said Dr. Dean
Sienko, interim chief
medical executive for the
MDCH. They also should
avoid alcohol and caffeine
because both can cause
dehydration, the first stage
of heat-related illness.
To avoid heat illness, the
health department suggests:
Stay cool. Use an air
conditioner or go to a cool
place such as a basement,
neighbors house, shop-
ping mall or cooling center.
Spending even a few hours
a day in air conditioning
can help reduce your risk
for heat illness.
Use a fan only when
the windows are open or
the air conditioner is on.
Fans will not prevent heat
illness when the tempera-
ture is in the high 90s.
Take a cool shower
or bath.
Keep shades and cur-
tains closed to block the sun
from coming in your home
or office.
Avoid exercising and
physical activity during
the hottest part of the day.
Mornings and evenings are
usually cooler than mid-
day.
Stay out of the sun.
If you must be in the sun,
wear thin and light-colored
clothing, a hat and sun-
glasses. Wear sun screen
(at least SPF15) and reap-
ply every two hours, after
swimming or exercising.
Check on family
members, neighbors and
friends at least once a day.
Move them to a cool place if
necessary.
Never, ever leave
children, the elderly or pets
in parked vehicles. Vehicles
heat up very quickly and
can become dangerous,
even with the windows
open.
Dehydration is the first
stage of heat-related ill-
ness. Dehydration occurs
when body fluids are lost by
sweating and not replaced.
Symptoms include dry
mouth, thirst, headache,
dizziness, cramps, excessive
fatigue and irritability.
Anyone experiencing
dehydration should move
to a shaded or air-condi-
tioned area, replace fluids
by drinking water, and
consult a physician if symp-
toms persist or if there is
an existing condition that
could be complicated by
increased fluid intake.
The next more serious
stage of heat-related ill-
ness is heat exhaustion.
Heat exhaustion typically
occurs when people exercise
heavily or work in a warm,
humid place where body
fluids are lost by sweating.
This fluid loss can cause
reduced blood flow to vital
organs, which results in
shock. Signs of heat exhaus-
tion include headache,
moist and pale skin, nausea,
dizziness, weakness and
exhaustion.
To treat exhaustion, seek
shade or a cool place. Drink
a half glass of cool water
every 15 minutes, remove
or loosen any tight clothing,
and apply a cool, wet towel
or compress. Heat exhaus-
tion can develop into heat
stroke, so if symptoms per-
sist or worsen, seek emer-
gency medical treatment.
Heat stroke is the most
severe stage of heat-related
illness. A heat stroke, also
called sunstroke, can be
deadly. Symptoms include
vomiting, decreased alert-
ness level or complete loss
of consciousness, high body
temperature (sometimes
as high as 105 degrees
fahrenheit) or red, hot, and
dry skin with a rapid, weak
pulse.
Call 911 for immediate
medical help and try to cool
the person down. If pos-
sible, put them in a tub of
cool water or shower them
with a garden hose.
