Unity Ignored by the Media wont stop Unity from Historical Achievements by Atyeb Ba Atum Re Written: January 7, 2011

Oppression and injustice are ceaseless in their pursuits of severing the threads, links and convictions of unity whenever it affixes itself to any cause that becomes commonly shared amongst any society. The American Media plays a journalistic double agent (good media/bad media) extremely well. We can thank Black Agenda Report, Facing South (Institute for Southern Studies) and Joe Weber (Death and Taxes Online Magazine) for demonstrating true journalism and doing what the highly depended upon Media neglected to do and that was reporting about the historical event of the Largest Prison Strike In American History Goes Ignored By US Media by Joe Weber http://www.deathandtaxesmag.com/41235/the-largest-prison-strike-inamerican-history-goes-ignored-by-us-media/ On January 7, 2011 most Americans are still totally oblivious to the historical fact that for seven days during December 9th through December 13th 2010, ten Georgia prisons, Macon, Baldwin, Hays, Hancock, Telfair and Smith State prisons were amongst the ten who somehow managed to successfully organize and execute peacefully the largest prison strike in American history in our nations southern confederate state.

What made it historical is the fact that after a common cause had been identified, the prisoners of the ten Georgia State prisons were able to demonstrate the Strength of Unity in spite of their racial, spiritual and gang related differences. In Joe Webers article he reports that:
An interview with one of the strike leaders revealed that every group of inmates in the prison had been working together. They want to break up the unity we have here, said an anonymous strike leader in an interview with the Black Agenda Report. We have the Crips and the Bloods, we have the Muslims, we have the head Mexicans, and we have the Aryans all with a peaceful understanding, all on common ground. The prison system in Georgia remains deplorable, unrepaired, and ruthlessly managed and the prisoners of that penal system are demanding better conditions. The prisoners are demanding: A LIVING WAGE FOR WORK: In violation of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution prohibiting slavery and involuntary servitude, the DOC demands prisoners work for free. EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES: For the great majority of prisoners, the DOC denies all opportunities for education beyond the GED, despite the benefit to both prisoners and society. DECENT HEALTH CARE: In violation of the 8th Amendment prohibition against cruel and unusual punishments, the DOC denies adequate medical care to prisoners, charges excessive fees for the most minimal care and is responsible for extraordinary pain and suffering. AN END TO CRUEL AND UNUSUAL PUNISHMENTS: In further violation of the 8th Amendment, the DOC is responsible for cruel prisoner punishments for minor infractions of rules. DECENT LIVING CONDITIONS: Georgia prisoners are confined in over-crowded, substandard conditions, with little heat in winter and oppressive heat in summer. NUTRITIONAL MEALS: Vegetables and fruit are in short supply in DOC facilities while starches and fatty foods are plentiful. VOCATIONAL AND SELF-IMPROVEMENT OPPORTUNITIES: The DOC has stripped its facilities of all opportunities for skills training, self-improvement and proper exercise. ACCESS TO FAMILIES: The DOC has disconnected thousands of prisoners from their families by imposing excessive telephone charges and innumerable barriers to visitation. JUST PAROLE DECISIONS: The Parole Board capriciously and regularly denies parole to the majority of prisoners despite evidence of eligibility.

Georgia has a long history of ignoring Human Rights Rules. Can it be that not even Governor Sonny Purdue cares about the lawlessness of his states penal system? Dont the citizens of Georgia realize that their state is in need of a major judicial over haul? How is it that Republican and Democratic candidates not have that problem as one of their main campaign pledges?

One thing that we all can be thankful for is that the true spirit of Unity will always appear causing societies and nations torn apart by hatred, divisive issues, racially inherited differences along with economic differences to courageously hold onto the rope of Unity when a peaceful understanding identifies a shared conflict, and places everyone on COMMON GROUND.
