FacultyofArtsandSocialSciences ModularSystemforCohort2011 INTRODUCTION

1 PRINCIPLES

FASS211

In the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, we subscribe to two important principles with respect to undergraduateeducation: (1) Depth and Breadth. Good undergraduate education involves a balanced combination of depth andbreadth.Bytheendofadegreeprogramme, graduatesshouldknowoneareawell, thatis,be awareofitsmainideas, ofthepossibilitiesandlimitationsofitsmethodology, andofitscurrent questions and problems. The best graduates will also be able to devise problems and pose questionsoftheirowninthisarea.Buttobeproperlyeducated, graduatesshouldalsohavebroad exposuretootherkindsofknowledgebeyondtheirspecialism. (2) Responsibility.Asundergraduatesarematurelearners, theyshouldbegiventheresponsibilityof determiningmuchoftheirownprogrammeofstudy:forinstance, theareaofspecialisation, and thescopeandnatureoftheirstudyoutsidethatarea.Inshort, thereshouldbebothflexibilityand choice. 2 PRINCIPLESANDDEGREESTRUCTURE The modular system in FASS is designed to embody these two principles. Every opportunity and constraintinthecurriculumisguidedbythewishtomakestudentsacquiredepthalongsidebreadth, andtoallowthemchoice. 3 DEPTH Depth is achieved mainly through the study of a major. Most students will pursue a single major programme. Some students may also opt to pursue a double major or double degree programme withintheuniversityframeworksiftheymeettherequirements.Studentsmayalsochoosetoreada minorinordertopursueanothersubjectinlessdepth. Forthesinglemajor, studentsreadmodulesfromasingledepartmentorprogrammeinpursuitofa developed and sophisticated understanding of one subject. The single major constitutes 50% of the B.Aand62.50%oftheHonoursdegree. The fourth belongs to the "Programme Requirements"[seeSection1,4(b)(i)],andthefifth,tothe"UnrestrictedElectivesRequirement"[see Section1,4(c)].
