You should begin with a paragraph or two introducing your study. Pieces of this are generated from the problem statement you developed. Try using a narrative hook something that grabs the readers attention. This introduction will lead into the next section, the review of the related literature. Review of Related Literature This section should contain a synthesis of research literature. If youve been focusing your searches for the research article critiques on a common theme, you should have a lot of the work done for you. This section should provide evidence as to what types of studies have been conducted in relation to your research problem and further confirm the need for you to conduct this research meaning, its not a problem that has already been solved, but one needing more research and/or ideas for research. A review of the literature should incorporate several studies with proper APA citation within the text. For example.. A study conducted by Woodstock & Brown (2006) determined that dog owners are extremely appreciative of the loyalty displayed by canines. Other studies, (Scooby, 2005; Yogi, 2006) concluded similar findings. A literature review should be extensive enough to effectively incorporate at least 7-10 related research studies that you synthesize in writing. All studies that are cited within the text of your literature review should be on your reference list at the end of the document. A good literature review will build to your statement of the problem which is the next section in the proposal.

The statement of the research problem should clearly identify the problem under investigation and provide justification for conducting the study. This section should also include evidence as to deficiencies in past research. Purpose of the Study The purpose of the study statement is a reformation of the statement of the problem. Its as simple as stating, the purpose of this study is to.. Research Questions and/or Hypothesis Statements This area should contain the research questions you plan to answer as they relate to your problem/purpose statements. They are usually numbered and you should avoid asking yes/no type questions. 1. How do beagles perceive to be treated by dog owners? 2. What measures do dog owners take to serve beagles? 3. How do beagles value dog owner responsibilities? 4. What measures do beagles recommend that humans should take to become better dog owners? Significance of the Study This section is something that comes out of the criteria used in the problem statement youve formulated it should provide the reader with why this important is important to do and who benefits from doing it. In other words, who is the intended audience?

The method of procedure section should tell the reader everything they need to know about how you conducted this study. This introductory paragraph should describe the type of research design utilized and the rationale for the selection of this design. Why was it the best choice to answer your research questions? There are a few subsections (participants, instruments and collection and analysis of data) that also need to be addressed and the headings are italicized and to the left as shown below. Selection of Instrumentation This should be a paragraph or two describing any instrumentation used to collect data from your participants. Did you use a survey? How many questions were asked? Did you follow an interview protocol? Was it a semi structured interview? All instruments referenced in this section become appendices at the end of the document. Selection of Participants Describe for the reader the participants in your study. You should also detail why and how they will be selected and how they will be contacted to participate in the study. How many people do you anticipate will participate? Collection & Analysis of Data This section should provide step by step instructions for how you will collect, organize and analyze your data.

The findings section is simply the results of your data analysis. What did you find out? This is sometimes presented by research question. Be careful to not draw conclusions yet. Conclusions & Recommendations This is the section where you as the researcher draw conclusions based upon the results of the data analysis and have the opportunity to provide recommendations for improvement based upon these conclusions. References Reference list should contain all the references used in your paper (literature review) in APA format and in alphabetical order. Appendices Appendices are items that you used in your study such as a survey or interview protocol or a letter of informed consent (letter that was sent out asking for participation in your study) and should be included as is (whole form) but in the back of the paper.
