1.a) Discuss various shapes of pressure vessels mentioning their


specific applications and limitations. Explain the need of shaped
shells for pressure vessels.
b) Discuss relative techniques in brief for cylindrical vessel subjected
to wind load and internal pressure.

2. Discuss various sources of thermal stresses in pressure vessels


and techniques involved in evaluations of stresses developed.
Mention the relevant relations.

3.a) Discuss briefly design of cone openings of pressure vessels.


Suggest precautions in their manufacture.
b) Discuss the technique used for determination of stresses developed
when circular plates are subjected to clamped ends. Mention
assumptions made.

4.a) Distinguish Beam on Elastic Foundation, infinite long semi infinite


Beams used in pressure vessel.
b) Discuss deformation and stresses developed in flanges.

5.a) Discuss stress theory of failure of vessels subject to fatigue


conditions. Distinguish ductile and brittle fracture. Explain the
concept of ductile to brittle transition temperature.
b) Discuss critically the behavior of steel beyond yield point.

6.a) Discuss in detail hydrogen embrittlement of pressure vessels.


b) Discuss creep and rupture of metals at elevated temperatures.
