Report on Research Methodology Workshop The workshop on research methodology was very useful to us as who got selected this

year and yet to have a feeling of the depths of PhD under new guidelines carefully drafted to produce real thesis and workable scholars. It gave us an opportunity at the beginning before the actual commencement of classes from july 1st to familiarize ourselves and start thinking about our topics and plan ahead. We learnt that we should work very hard if we really want to complete the PhD and to compete with others once we get the doctorate. But the roadmap is drawn and we have to follow it carefully if we want to succeed. As Professor PL Vishweshwar Rao keep on saying in his remarks facilities and money is not a constraint for the students as long as they want to learn and the university is ready to help with more such workshops and micro workshops at department level also. It inspired us and made aware that it is we who should grab the opportunity and try to work hard for completing the PhD. The workshop made us aware the difficulties ahead in the form of DATA mines and their compilation and later writing research report and at the same time enlightened us how to diffuse the DATA mines and how to clear the mind blocks and how to come out of depression and fatigue of data collection and its analysis .It gave valuable tips in the form of dos and do nots. Certainly this workshop helped us to do better research with the right focus and the right attitude, and made us to question ourselves about our topic and how relevant it is in the light of this workshop teachings. This exhaustive workshop helped particularly students like me who secured admission on the basis of eligibility test and needs to know more about research and how to go about it. It gave us some fundamental principles of research writing. The workshop started with a welcome note from Prof.PL.Visheweshwar Rao who dealt about the workshop and told that sky is the limit for scholors to pursue their research and there are all facilities and O.U is ready to help them in a bigway with workshops and facilities provided. The scholors should show their sincerity in pursuing the research. The details of various scholorships and fellowships from UGC and other institutions were listed. The first lecture was quite inspiring and we should say a good beginning to workshop by Prof.V.Vishwanadham Retd.Department of Commerce O.U about the research which according to him nothing but what, why and how.According to him the most difficult part is formulating a meaningful research question and a answer is only as good as question, which stresses the need to choose a right topic based on our interest and the information availability and the result will be good.He rightly pointed out that it is a age of surplus information compared to the past when information availability is at premium.According to him students shold be creative and start thinking and discuss with others to be unique in research nad finally he concluded with the remarks that write, rewrite, revise, edit and present is the way research work should be carried out.

Professor Murthy lecture on basics of research and research concepts and dealt with variables, concepts and suggested that dictionary should be refered and stressed the importance of using the right language.Prof.Murthy dealt with the basic research terms and their meanings. Prof.k.Vimala department of linguistics and associate Prof.at university of Chicago gave a lectute on linguistics the need for inter disciplinary studies and about telugu poems from 11th century like Srinatha shathakam etc. Prof.Chenna Basavaiah Department of political science O.U spoke about research process and regarding various interview techniques, structured and unstructured interviews, quantitative and qualitative interviews and stressed that it requires different types of skills to be applied while dealing with rural and urban sample and literate and illiterate people and some examples how deep the answers from rural illiterate people during the questioning. The second day of lectures started with Prof.Shahid Ali Abbasi Department of Islamic Studies speaking on applied aspects of research stressed the importance of brain storming and structuring questions and using colour papers for each chapter at the initial stages for easy sorting and maintaining two books one for jotting down the ideas and the other for questions. He talked about reversal plan and to keep 3-6 months cushion period in the case of emergencies and usig familyword finder of Readers Digest to use different words instead of repeating the same words.starting writing without giving importance for syntext and the need for realistic goals ,seeking comments on early drafts from colleagues is helpful.Prof.Abbasi spoke about the need for researcher to generate points and organize ideas into accountable structure ands using plain language and keeping guide briefed about your failures and success. Prof. Padmaja Shaw Department of communication and journalism ,EFLU University, spoke about research report writing ,about chapterization ,review of literature and gave valuable suggestion it is not a good idea to start with introduction or conclusion and it is better if we start where we are comfortable typically a middle chapter.Prof,Padmaja shaw dealt regarding the review of literature and the all important ZOTERO software which will make our work easier while browsing the information making work easier. The all important warning was deleiverd regarding the usage of anti plagiarism software by Professors to identify the lifting paragraphs from others work and discoraged the students from such practices..She spoke about methodology need to explain the methods of data collection, coping fatigue, taking feedback and discussing ,taking breaks during the research all these are related to stress related work of Phd. Prof. V.Vishwa Mohan OF Department of library science spoke about the need for the research should be supported by theory and every statement shoud be supported by source and sources of research should be always quoted. He asked the scholprs to extensively make use of internet for research, about primary and secondary data, indexing ,index service and abstract service, reference books, monographs and open access journals explained. He asked to make use of UGC infonet,OPEN JGATE,library congress and OCLC worldcat were also listed for browsing.

Prof. Siddiq Ali Retd.Department of English of O.U speaking on conducting research and preliminary steps said that research is systemized effort to gain new knowledge and it is intellectually controlled investigation and discovering and codification of new informationfor the development of further understanding.HE explained the difference between a workshop and seminar and about thr basic and applied research and concluded that research is 4 R ,Reading,wRiting,Reflection and Rustication. He concluded on lighter note about his unfinished ambition of doing research on back benchers psychology referring to the back bencher scholors. Regarding the suggestions we definitely need more workshops may be with single session in a day without lunch break, the session after lunch is difficult to concentrate. The session timings from 9am to 2pm is ideal with tea breaks.we can have 4 lectures which may allow better concentration. The students topics should be discussed in detail in micro workshps proposed by Prof.PL.Vishweshwar Rao and a seminar purely by students for the students is also welcome step. The workshops should be more interactive which requires active participation from students, may be the subsequect sessions wll be more interactive like real workshops, Last but not least Prof.PL.Vishweshwar Rao dean faculty of Arts vibrant attitude made this workshop a grand success in terms of attendance where even the concluding day also saw maximum numcer students which is quite rare in recent days.He was there every where to make us move fast from tea to lunch and back to workshop with least time for refreshments and maximum for workshop sessions.Periodically he told the students about the various available opportunities for the scholors, the need for improving the language skills and stressed for timely completion of research under the new guidelines.
