Diagram rs232 DG9 (null-modem)

Step by step on how to test the RSR232 on the computer 1 Strip a half centimeter of the plastic jacket off of each end of each of the four 1-inch wires using the wire-stripping tool. 2 Power up the soldering iron and wait a few minutes until it gets hot. 3 Locate the small numbers next to each pin on the back of the DB9 connector. Each pin can be identified by the number that is next to the pin. Insert an end of one of the wire pieces fashioned earlier into the hole on pin 1, and place the other end of the wire into the hole on pin 4. Then place the end of a second piece of wire into the hole on pin 4, and the other end of the wire into the hole on pin 6. Solder the ends of the wires to the connector pins. 4 Place an end of another one of the wire pieces prepared earlier into the hole on pin 2, and the place the other end of the wire into the hole on pin 3, located on the back of the DB9 connector. Then solder the ends of the wires to the connector pins. 5 Position an end of one of the wire pieces into the hole on pin 7, and the other end of the wire into the hole on pin 8, located on the back of the DB9 connector. Then solder the ends of the wires to the connector pins. 6 Plug the DB9 connector (which is now a loop-back connector) into the nine pin, "D" shaped, male connector on the computer, i.e. the serial port to be tested. Note that the serial port is usually located on a connector panel on the back of the computer. 7 Open the terminal software that is installed on the computer, such as Hyperterminal or Tera Term. Select the Com port to be tested and agree to the default settings. Type a few words in the terminal and press the "Enter" key. If the words are echoed back onto the terminal screen, then the serial port is functioning properly.

Difference between crossover and straight through Straight-through cables are primarily used for connecting unlike devices. A straight-through cable is typically used in the following situations: Use a straight-through cable when:

1. Connecting a router to a hub 2. Connecting a computer to a swtich 3. Connecting a LAN port to a switch, hub, or computer

Note that some devices such as routers will have advanced circuitry, which enables them to use both crossover and straight-through cables. In general, however, straight-through cables will not connect a computer and router because they are not unlike devices. Use a crossover cable when:

1. Connecting a computer to a router 2. Connecting a computer to a computer 3. Connecting a router to a router 4. Connecting a switch to a switch 5. Connecting a hub to a hub

While the rule of thumb is to use crossover cables with like devices, some devices do not follow standards. Others provide support for both types of cables. However, there is still something that both crossover and straight-through cables cant do.
