Appendix A Survey Forms Collected from EU and ASEAN Participants

A Survey on Adequacy of Postgraduate EMC Education in the Universities

The objective of the survey is to understand the needs of electronic companies/manufacturers in the area of EMC training for their engineers. The survey results will help the universities in developing an innovative university course to better prepare future electronic designers for the challenges imposed by the assurance of the electrical performance of high-speed electronic systems. Five universities that participated in this project are Polytechnic of Turin (Italy), University of Hannover (Germany), University of Nottingham (UK), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) and King Monguts Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Bangkok (Thailand).

1. 2. 3. 4.

Name: Ronald De Smedt Company: Alcatel Bell, F.Wellesplein 1, B-2018 Antwerpen (Belgium) Job Title: Physical design competence engineer EMC/SI/Thermal Your company products/services: Telecom systems

5.

Have you attended any EMC course? (If yes, please list down the courses you have attended) Yes (but long time ago!): - PATO-course Electromagnetic compatibility, Eindhoven (Netherlands), 1986. - Electromagnetic compatibility engineering, Course of the Center for Professional Advancement, Amsterdam (Netherlands), 1988. We have also developed our own, elaborated, 2-days EMC course for designers (mechanical, electronic), which have been given several times at various locations of Alcatel units (Antwerpen, Stuttgart, Paris, Toulouse, Madrid, Dallas).

6.

Do you think the knowledge acquired in the courses is useful for your job? (Please give your reasons) Definitely, the two courses, which I have followed (see 5.), were an excellent starting point to be acquainted with the subject. Similarly, the aim of our internal EMC course is to assist our designers to provide a better EMC compliance. At lot of both theoretical background (to better understand the phenomena) and practical examples (eg. good and bad practices) are given. Such a course is accepted well by the designers, as it helps them definitely to make more reasonable compromises and produce better designs. In addition we also provide an extensive EMC design guide and a short checklist (with the most important points of attention).

7.

If an EMC course comes with a practical demonstrator that allows you to appreciate good and bad EMC design practices, do you think it will help you to understand the concept of good EMC design better? (Please provide reasons) Of sure, practical demonstrators are helping to understand EMC. - Life demonstrations are very well convincing. In particular, it removes the doubt, which some sceptic people may have about the amount of impact of EMC phenomena. - Demonstrations are close to real life situations, hence, will induce large interest and recognition from the audience. - It helps much at better understand the theory. - It is a welcome and refreshing change to the more theoretical explanations.

8.

What EMC design issues (e.g. crosstalk, conducted EMI, shielding, PCB layout, radiated EMI, etc.) you would like to include in the practical demonstrator? There exist already a large collection of suitable EMC demonstrators (see eg. the demonstration section at the yearly IEEE EMC Symposium). The practical demonstrations could also cover life (or recorded) demos of simulations (eg. radiations from lines or cables, field penetration through slots and apertures in a shielded box).

9.

Any other suggestions to improve the delivery of EMC course? A good balance between theory (to understand the underlying physical phenomena, without going into detailed theoretical derivations avoid too complicated theoretical expressions, which are scaring a lot of people !), examples of good/bad practices and life demonstrations. A good hand-out, supplemented with a design guide and checklist. Web-based applications of this design guide and checklist are interesting as well, as small simulations can be included as well.

Thank you for taking time to complete the survey.

If an EMC course comes with a practical demonstrator that allows you to appreciate good and bad EMC design practices, do you think it will help you to understand the concept of good EMC design better? (Please provide reasons)

Yes. Of course it helps me to better understand the concept of good EMC design. In fact EMC knowledge can also be obtained from some reference books. Most of these books, they just tell readers what design is correct and what design is not appropriate. However, as no practical demonstrators are given, readers cant really 100% believe or appreciate their conclusions.

8.

What EMC design issues (e.g. crosstalk, conducted EMI, shielding, PCB layout, radiated EMI, etc.) you would like to include in the practical demonstrator? As much as possible, all the above EMC design issues could be included in the practical demonstrator. It does help learners to have first hand sense of the mentioned EMC issues.

9.

Any other suggestions to improve the delivery of EMC course? A lot of engineers encounter EMC problems in their work. It is hoped that some dedicated EMC course could be provided. CASE STUDY course is proposed. It is a good practice to learn from mistakes.

5.

Have you attended any EMC course? (If yes, please list down the courses you have attended) E6303 conducted by NTU.

6.

Do you think the knowledge acquired in the courses is useful for your job? (Please give your reasons) Yes, definitely. This course provides details on how EMC/EMI works and methods to overcome it. As far as I know, there have not been many EMC/EMI courses and most young design engineers pick up this subject through older colleagues without proper guidance. Hence it is very important to understand the basics and the elements of EMC/EMI through this kind of courses.

7.

If an EMC course comes with a practical demonstrator that allows you to appreciate good and bad EMC design practices, do you think it will help you to understand the concept of good EMC design better? (Please provide reasons) Yes it definitely helps a lot. In my opinion, it is very important to have hands-on experience rather than only theoretically learning. Examples and case studies or probably small projects will benefit the students to further understand the concept well. This is because many of the design engineers nowadays has a certain product development cycle time of a span of less than 1 to 2 years, therefore it is not everyday that these design engineers deal with EMC problems. Sometimes, what they learned from theory can be easily forgotten if not use frequently on the job. Therefore, it is important to have a practical project that these design engineers can have hands-on experience to work with and indirectly engrave this concept in their mindset.

8.

What EMC design issues (e.g. crosstalk, conducted EMI, shielding, PCB layout, radiated EMI, etc.) you would like to include in the practical demonstrator? I think all the above-mentioned should be included in the practical demonstrator. It may not be necessary a huge complex product for the practical demonstrator, only a small and easy product will do, example a cordless phone which operate a low frequency range.

9.

Any other suggestions to improve the delivery of EMC course? It seems that the EMC course has many topics related to general knowledge like what specifications to adhere to, agency, tests and measurement setup. I think all this information can be read by students at their own time. Instead, the course should explain more on technical aspect like proper PCB layout design, component selections, filtering circuit, coupling effect and so on.

Have you attended any EMC course? (If yes, please list down the courses you have attended) In House Practical Training, NTU, PCB Layout Design for EMI Compliance, academic

6.

Do you think the knowledge acquired in the courses is useful for your job? (Please give your reasons) Yes as I had a better understanding of the concept and applications of circuit design for EMI compliance. From the course I realize the effect of EMI can be a disaster to the electronic world that we live in. Designing concept and techniques on how to suppress EMI are taught during the course and project are done to feel and realize the EMI effects.

7.

If an EMC course comes with a practical demonstrator that allows you to appreciate good and bad EMC design practices, do you think it will help you to understand the concept of good EMC design better? (Please provide reasons) It is definitely very useful as we can convince ourselves by applying the design concepts that we have learnt during the course to practical demonstration. It will involves test measurement and from there we will know if we had correctly applied the techniques and concept to successfully suppress EMI radiation. From the practical projects we might even discover some other design concepts.

8.

What EMC design issues (e.g. crosstalk, conducted EMI, shielding, PCB layout, radiated EMI, etc.) you would like to include in the practical demonstrator? Electrostatic Discharge, Diagnostics of EMI problem, Emission from Digital Circuits.

9.

Any other suggestions to improve the delivery of EMC course? Have more practical experiments and mini projects. If limited by resources for a large group of students, a demonstration would be able to let the students have a better view and picture of EMI effects. Include case studies in course notes of some joint EMC projects with the industries outside to better demonstrate the EMC design concept and its effects to practical

6.

Do you think the knowledge acquired in the courses is useful for your job? (Please give your reasons) Yes, it gets us as a designer thinking about EMI/EMC right at the start of the product development cycle. In the long run, this helps to reduce the amount of NRE (nonrepetitive engineering costs).

7.

If an EMC course comes with a practical demonstrator that allows you to appreciate good and bad EMC design practices, do you think it will help you to understand the concept of good EMC design better? (Please provide reasons) Definitely, nothing reinforces a theory like a good old solid experiment.

8.

What EMC design issues (e.g. crosstalk, conducted EMI, shielding, PCB layout, radiated EMI, etc.) you would like to include in the practical demonstrator? The more common issues that would lead to degradation of signal integrity in the system (e.g. crosstalk, cabling and layout) and any issues that would lead to a failure during certification (e.g. radiated and conducted EMI).

9.

Any other suggestions to improve the delivery of EMC course? No.
